Preseason Game #1 (12/16/2011) --- Cavs @ Pistons, 7:30PM

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
kyrie looked good, but i don't think he'll be a spectacular player. he'll be a solid point guard along the lines of Andre Miller or Chauncey Billups - he doesn't have the quickness or athleticism to be a derrick rose or russell westbrook type. he'll be a solid player though. Brandon Knight on the other hand looks like he'll be a Russell Westbrook clone. Not sure who will get rookie of the year, but it might not be Kyrie.

Tristan...yikes...he's going to be a project. he showed some positives, but i think it'll take about 5 years before he looks anything like a real NBA player. he looks severely offensively challenged.

a side note...Andy really stepped up his offensive game. He had some smooth shots and moved well with the ball...2 years ago he would've dribbled it off his leg or just bricked the layup off the backboard...somehow he has developed A LITTLE offensive ability...i give props when they're due.

if there's any player who physically doesn't look like he belongs in the NBA, it's Luke Harongody - he looks like an old-timey boxer or old-timey football player or something - big barrel chest and stubby limbs. he's in the wrong sport.

Samardo looks LEGIT. i love his game. kind of disappointing that an undrafted player (samardo) looked better than our #4 overall pick. Samardo just looks comfortable and natural in the paint.

we'll see a lot of ugly basketball from this roster...just waiting for the draft.

I think we already knew that Kyrie isnt having Rose or Westbrook type of athleticism so thats not worrying me too much. What I didnt like were the Turnovers and the way he declined during the game. He looked gassed to me in the 4th quarter and that was while he didnt even play most of the 1st or 3rd quarter. He really needs to work on that now. Also he has to up his speed a little bit, he wasted too much of the shot clock on most of his possessions.

Brandon Knight looked pretty good I have to agree. He definitly wanted to prove something, was really fighting hard for every ball. Not too sure about the Westbrook comparison though.... What is going to be interesting is that Kyrie and Knight are going to see each other a lot in the regular season (Pistons are in the same divison as the Cavs).

Agree on Andy aswell, maybe its because he is surrounded by horrible players but he looks to be better then ever.

Anyone know where I can download the game from? Missed it.

Kyrie is a stud. TT did what he does. Hustle . Andy is sick on D, like always. He hit a couple jumpers. TT gets up off the court like its a trampoline. omri needs to get healthy. We need lamb and we'd be set. Kyrie is a superstar. I dont know where that thread went....

I think most international Cavs fans have fallen in love with the Cavs while LBJ stayed here. From beeing a LBJ fan in the first place to getting a fan of the actual team.

For me it was playing NBA Live `03 ... I was quite new to Basketball at that time but I always played with the Cavs in this game (I dont even know why). This sympathy translated to the real NBA and then LBJ came and turned us into a good team. So that was basically how I became a Cavs-Fan...

Of course all started with LBJ being Cavalier, but in that time i was just wake up and see box score and that's it, watch some games in tv and that's it. When he left us, my real love for Cavs showed up. Last season i watch every single game of my Cavaliers, this season i start similar with draft night and preseason game, and i am excited, i am really excited for this team. Now i can proudly say that i am fan, Cavs fan, and no matter how this year will look, i am proud of this team. GO CAVS GO

I'm one of the guys who had just started to get into basketball around the time that LeBron was drafted, so I thought that the Cavs were a no brainer as the team that I'd like to follow. As the years have passed, I have truly gained a love for the loyalty of certain players that doesn't seem to be found in most American sports teams, at least in my opinion. Here in Australian sports, being a one club player is what the majority of players aim for.

Thats similiar to me, once LBJ left I got way more passionate about the Cavs. Unfortunately, of the international Cavs fans of the LBJ era that I know, only a handful are left, at the same time Heat fans have at least doubled or trebled. That what I hate with basketball fans outside of the US, most are just hopping on the bandwagon of the team that has the best chance to win a championship. Plus I am German which means that most Basketball fans around here are huge Nowitzki homers. So its either Heat, Mavs, Lakers and a few Celtics and Bulls fans.

We have basketball forum here in Bosnia and there were really much Cavs fans, well after THE DECISION, only me left as a Cavs fan, and only me writing about our team in that PDF for Cavs :chuckles:

I know what your talking about lol ... exact same thing with German basketball forums

Newsflash: the draft was really, really bad.

But we already knew that.

Thank Jesus we convinced the Clippers to give us that extra pick and bribed Stern for the #1 because if we had only come out of it with Thompson ....

i assume the cavs, if they only had the #4 pick, would have taken knight since they didn't have irving.

My thoughts on the rookies:

Kyrie isn't athletic as hell, but his smoothness and deception is going to make him a star in this league. Also, his ability to cross over guys when he is on the drive is really impressive. Looked, to me, a lot like Deron Williams. His turnovers and lack of assists will change when he gets comfortable with some guys or when we get guys who can actually make 3 three every once and a while.

TT is what I thought he was. If he can work on his game, which I see no reason why he cannot develop anything outside of the basket, then he will be a very good starter for us. His athletic ability will get him to the line a ton and his defense is already pretty good and will become fantastic once he gets older. It's like JJ with a brain.

Both of these guys need to eat and sleep basketball for the foreseeable future, though. Kyrie definitely needs to get in the gym and start working out hard, while Tristan needs to take about 5,000 jumpers every day. I see high potential from both guys, though, and both are very smart. Very excited to see how they progress.

My breakdown of each person that played significant minutes.

Starters:

Ramon Sessions - One thing I noticed was that he gave better effort defensively than normal. He tried hard at keeping Bynum out of the lane and did reasonably well at that. Offensively, he is what he is. He's the same player from the last three years; can't shoot a lick, runs endless pick and rolls, and he'll have one absolutely horrible missed layup per game. That said, I think he's going to be a fine backup point guard because he won't turn the ball over and he can provide offense out of nothing for the 2nd unit.

Anthony Parker - Steady and unspectacular. A game like tonight made me realize exactly why he was brought back. He's lost a couple of steps defensively, but he's probably one of the smartest players in the entire league and always knows where to be (even if his lack of speed doesn't allow him to get to that spot on time). Offensively he's going to be a big help for Kyrie and Ramon because he's comfortable handling and moving the ball offensively. If he limits his out of control plays offensively and just focuses on keeping the ball moving and hitting open threes, he'll be good.

Alonzo Gee - I thought Alonzo did everything well, except shoot the basketball which was dreadful. I thought his efforts defensively were excellent and he showed up huge on the glass. He extended a few offensive possessions on hustle alone. Obviously the lack of a jumper is the one thing that's holding him back because he had several wide open looks in the first quarter and just couldn't knock them down. I do think if he keeps up this level of hustle and commitment to defense, he'll be Casspi's primary backup ahead of Eyenga.

Antawn Jamison - Like Sessions, Jamison is what he is. Barring injury or a trade, he's for sure going to lead this team in scoring, but it's going to be a frustrating year to watch him fire jumpers with his foot on the three point line and miss free throws. That said, the team needs him. He's one of the few guys who's not afraid to shoot and this team has a major lack of scoring. The only play he had that I really enjoyed was the one post up opportunity he got against Villanueva where he good deep position and got an easy layup. I hope the team takes advantage of these opportunities when they come along in the season and don't limit Jamison to running pick and pops for 20 footers.

Anderson Varejao - Couldn't be happier to have him back. By far our best defensive player and best finishing big around the rim. His energy is contagious and he's the lynch pin of the defensive effort, which I felt was very good last night. I was very pleased with the jumpers that Varejao knocked down because that shot is going to be there all year for him. The play where showed hard on the screen and forced a steal around midcourt and started the fastbreak himself was a thing of beauty. I think his trade value will be there if he stays healthy. Will Grant be willing to trade him is a bigger question?

Bench:

Kyrie Irving - Very pleased with his performance all things considered. He made a few poor passes into the post and had too much mustard on a few other passes, but I thought he looked smooth. I don't want to call a 19 year old crafty, but that's exactly how Irving plays to me. He doesn't look like he's moving particularly fast, but the next thing you know he's in the lane and his body control is so good that he can absorb a hit and draw a foul. Obviously its a bit of a concern that Kyrie seemed to gas out in the 4th quarter given that he only played half the game. I hope his conditioning is where it needs to be because with 66 games in 122 days, there are going to be a lot of nights where those legs are going to be really heavy. Outside of that and some minor turnover issues, I think he's going to be really good.

Mychel Thompson - I wasn't terribly impressed with him. He seemed to be a good athlete who didn't have a lot of skills. His rebounding was pretty good and his defense wasn't bad, but I didn't see much ball handling or shooting ability. I wouldn't get rid of Manny Harris for him, but I wouldn't be surprised if that happened.

Christian Eyenga - Still an elite athlete, still has no idea how to play basketball. Was totally out of control with the basketball and took a horrible contested three late in the game. We all know he can run and jump, but I wasn't very impressed with anything else he did. Daye made him look pretty stupid defensively getting him in the air and then stuck a jumper in his face.

Tristian Thompson - Was completely invisible in the first half. Literally did nothing offensively and picked up a bunch of fouls. Was much better in the 2nd half. His free throw stroke wasn't as bad as I expected, even though he missed some. He's obviously very raw offensively, but he didn't look like a complete lost cause. Defensively, he's not going to be very good holding the point of attack in one on one post situations, but his length and athleticism will give people problems as a weakside shotblocker. I have no doubt that he'll continue to work to get better and improve his game.

Samardo Samuels - By far the most pleasant surprise for me. When he first checked into the game, my first reaction was "Damn, Samardo looks FAT" I thought he looked like he was a good 15 pounds overweight, but he played his ass off. Maybe the extra weight actually helped him because he looked like a real bull down low. He was impossible to move off the spot and he racked up a ton of fouls on the Pistons soft bigs. If he was 3 inches taller, he would have been a top 10 pick. He's strong as hell, he can make a jumper and free throws, his post moves are pretty good, he's just short and plays below the rim. Either way, he was our best player last night and really controlled the paint.

If Kyrie's not a natural floor general then Deron Williams isn't one either and imo that's false.

Deron Williams definitely is, and Kyrie is not Deron Williams at this time...

Deron was always on the ball. Even though he was a better scorer and bigger than Dee at Illinois. For Kyrie, he has the handle and shiftiness to be great, but there were stretches last year when he looked best attacking as a 2guard for Duke.

In the McDonalds game and the international game with the High School players against the foreigners out in Portland, both times Kyrie started the games as the 2 guard with Brandon Knight starting the point. And went long stretches off the ball to be more dangerous.

He has alot to learn for running an offense, but he is much further along than guys like John Wall, Steph Curry or even Derrick Rose

Kyrie Irving - Very pleased with his performance all things considered. He made a few poor passes into the post and had too much mustard on a few other passes, but I thought he looked smooth. I don't want to call a 19 year old crafty, but that's exactly how Irving plays to me. I think this is something a few people have trouble with, in regards to evaluating Kyrie's athleticism. He's an incredibly smooth athlete. When he drives, it almost looks effortless and to the untrained eye, that makes him look slow (which he clearly is not). He's kind of like a long strider in football (in that regard).

It's easy to identify Rose's and Westbrook's athleticism because they're a bit more explosive but also a bit more herky jerky. That kind of player movement, start / stop / start / stop looks more impressive than someone like Kyrie, who is very in control and almost methodical with the ball. You're not going to see him string together 10 moves off the dribble and then get to the basket. His decisiveness with the basketball makes him a little more mundane, in terms of trying to "wow" fans while he has the ball. He's a more surgical player. Not a lot of wasted movement.

It will obviously be easier to evaluate as we see him play more but I don't think he's going to have any trouble getting to the basket. One thing that will help him manufacture quickness (off the dribble) is his shot, much like Billups does. He has a quick release and shoots well on the move. Guys will have to honor shoulder fakes and hesitation moves because they know he can elevate and drill that mid range shot. That will really help him draw fouls and get by his man.

All in all, 21, 6 and 3 while looking a little rusty isn't bad. He'll get his legs under him over the next few weeks but that 25-30 minute mark is where they're going to have to keep him. Some people forget he sat for the better part of a year (in terms of being in game shape). He was off most of his freshman season in college and was encouraged by the Cavs to take time off after the draft to let his toe heal. He's still working his body back in to game shape, so his legs aren't quite there yet.
