Rule 5 draft talk

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Why do you need a 3rd catcher on the 40 man before the season/before FA?

Why do you need a 3rd catcher on the 40 man before the season/before FA?

I'm talking after the Rule 5. You're going to have to make a roster move to add a C, they aren't rolling into the season with just Hedges and Lavastida. So I'm asking what's the move with their 40 man coming out of the Rule 5 to add that C.

So tossing Bebo, Chang, Mercado, Zimmer, Allen, Garza, Hill, Moss, Nelson, Young it looks like. Protecting Lavastida, Rocchio, Palacios, Tena, Freeman, Valera, Kwan, Noel, Morris, Pilkington, Cantillo, and Adam Scott.

Same question, who is your 1B vs LHP?

Who is your 4th OFer after 2 OFers are added and Ramirez and Johnson are tossed?

Good losing Allen after his finish to the season and having limited experienced depth at SP after Morgan? Comfortable enough in Morris, Cantillo, Pilkington to step up at the MLB level if need be, or Mejia or Hentges?
O. Miller could platoon at 1B, but this list was just pre R5. Trades need to be made, especially involving at least 1 MIF. I'd move Rosario and/or Plesac plus prospects to acquire an OF and/or C if they can't adress these needs in FA.

L. Allen vs Hentges vs Mejia vs Vargas is a wash for me, I trust the FO to pick the right arms to keep or trade/DFA the odd man out.
I do trust Eli Morgan to be a reliable SP5 and consider Morris our 2nd best SP prospect behind Espino, on par with G. Williams in the top 10 of the system. That's why I'm comfortable trading Plesac.
The Angels OF/1B T. Ward is one of my favorite trade targets. He's a RHB and could spell Bradley at 1B vs LHP (with Reyes to OF in those games?).
Kwan could serve as 4th OF, but an NRI OF (think Gamel/B. Hamilton 2020) could fill that spot once Naylor is moved to the 60 IL in March

Gonna try to get to as many of these as I can.

I'm just going to sub in Moss for the time being to replace Perez.

So, speaking from earlier today, you're dumping Wittgren, Hill, Young, Bebo, H Ram it looks like. Protecting Valera, Palacios, Lavastida, Rocchio, Kwan, Morris, Cantillo, Pilkington.

First thing is first. Where is Tyler Freeman?

Tena is going to get swooped up here as well. Think he has a chance to go unselected? Are you okay if he is due to the depth in the infield?

Next question is, who do you DFA for MLB adds, or are you thinking some of the adds are going to be used in a potential trade? OF looks simple enough, can move off of 2 of Zimmer, Mercado, Johnson if need be. Who do you toss for the 3rd C, one of the IFs between Chang and Clement? Obviously pitcher adds are easier with quick fodder like Moss, Garza, and Nelson.
D'oh, I can't believe I omitted Tyler Freeman... Updated 40-man below:

  • Catcher: Austin Hedges, Bryan Lavastida
  • 1B: Bobby Bradley, Josh Naylor
  • 2B: Andres Gimenez, Yu Chang, Owen Miller, Tyler Freeman, Richie Palacios
  • SS: Amed Rosario, Gabriel Arias, Brayan Rocchio
  • 3B: Jose Ramirez, Nolan Jones, Ernie Clement
  • LF: George Valera, Daniel Johnson
  • CF: Myles Straw, Steven Kwan
  • RF: Oscar Mercado, Bradley Zimmer
  • Designated Hitter: Franmil Reyes
  • SP: Shane Bieber, Aaron Civale, Zach Plesac, Cal Quantrill, Triston McKenzie, Eli Morgan, Cody Morris, Konnor Pilkington, Joey Cantillo
  • RP: Emmanuel Clase, James Karinchak, Nick Sandlin, Anthony Gose, Trevor Stephan, Sam Hentges, Kyle Nelson, Justin Garza, Carlos Vargas
1. I think Tena is a prime candidate to be traded before December, but yes, I would be okay with leaving him unprotected if they can't deal him. The front office can't justify putting Tena on the 40-man roster when he hasn't played above High-A ball and this organization is already littered with middle infielders in the system.

2. Yes, I think only one of Zimmer, Mercado or Johnson is in the organization next season. My guess is Zimmer is the one who is kept, but it's likely a toss up.

3. I believe Palacios ends up getting traded in a package for an established outfielder, so the team would be able to keep both Chang and Clement on the 40 man roster under my scenario.

This is the best Guardians thread ever started.

Please confirm that Jerson Ramirez is not up for the R5 this year... I would be very happy if he is still a year away from eligibility.

Jerson was born in November 1998 and I see he was signed in July 2018. That would indicate he was over 18 when signed (hence 4 years before being eligibel for the R5).

I have seen Jerson listed as eligible to be taken in the R5 by multiple places (Indians Prospective twitter, IBI Justin Lada & Willie Hood, Roster Resource) previously..

Again if it is official he is not eligible for this upcoming R5, I will be thrilled. I look forward to your confirmation one way or the other...

Nelson for Perez in this situation.

So you tossed Bebo, Zimmer, H Ram, Johnson, Garza, Wittgren, Young it looks like. Protected Lavastida, Freeman, Rocchio, Kwan, Palacios, Valera, Cantillo, Morris, Pilkington.

Same question for you, think Tena is safe or are you good with the MI depth that you're fine if he's selected?

Who do you toss for the 3rd C? Chang or Clement?

Who do you toss for 2 potential OFs, and if one is Mercado who is your 4th OFer?

I figured someone one of them was on the bubble, just didn't know which one, so Perez is one of the last guys...

I dont think Tena is safe, but with as many INFs as we have, its hard to merit having a spot for him...

Actually I think my trade for an OF will open a spot for a C... trading from the MIF is essentially what I think will happen. I'd go big for Reynolds in a sense, but I don't know the actual cost prospect wise for each available guy...

When it comes to 4th OF it will be Mercado since he has MLB experience and bats from the right side which currently a lot of the possible OFs dont...

My sources said Jerson was signed in Aug of 17 via baseball America, which should make him Rule 5 eligible... @BimboColesHair do you have the same info?

Regardless if signed in 17 or 18 cause one would be 5 years and the other if he signed at 19, which would be 4 years, he would be rule 5 eligible... hard to believe he isnt from the straight facts...

I would like to know what brass thinks of Moss. With only 20 official inn pitched in 2 yrs, I wouldn't think he can be counted on in April as few game spot starter but he could i guess. If we keep, Allen, Hentges and Mejia in pen, I would assume they would be streched in ST for 3-4 innings to fill in at beginning of season for injuries along with Morgan. If Mejia gets 4th option, I assume he is 7th starter in AAA. What is Moss's role then come mid-season where we have our recent additions in Cantillo, Pilk and Battenfield about ready at least for few spot games in July along with Morris and our guys like Scott and others? Heck, we even have McCarty and Hillman as desperation (9th/10th type starter) depth.

I liked Moss in trade but dont see him as long term pen guy and will quickly get passed over as spot starter as others get AAA seasoning. Just see him as expendable for a roster spot, if needed, for Tena as 21st position guy until 60 day DL opens.

December 2021 Jerson Ramirez is eligible for Rule V selection..

For me, as long as I have some confidence that the front office will bring in two upgrades for our outfield, I really don’t care which one of Zimmer/Johnson/Mercado stays as an extra outfielder. I definitely don’t want Harold back.

I had purged my memory of Gamel and Hamilton and you had to again bring up their names.:puke:
