Rule 5 draft talk

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I made this post in another RCF forum, but in case it was missed I am also posting here
Just FYI for people...

Rawlings announced the minor league gold glove winners on Thursday.
In the minor league setup only 9 awards are given (1 per position) across the entire minors, not per league or level.

The SS awarded the gold glove in 2021: JOSE TENA

Link to the official story/ announcements:

Thanks MT .... I know Tena has been coming on strong for Rule 5 protection, even from Bimbo. Would assume this makes him a sure lock ... gold glove in all minors and hitting in AFL as one of youngest. With 26 roster spaces, NL can keep 2 utility guys if DH not installed, easy space to hide someone as defensive replacement/sub for tanker.

@petes999
IMHO - Tena is either dealt before the Friday deadline or has to be protected on the updated 40 man roster. He gets taken if exposed to the R5 draft.
I even said that back on that podcast back in late October (during GM 1 of the World Series).

I would be stunned if Tena is added to the 40 man roster. There’s no way the organization can justify carrying a MIF, fringe top 20 prospect who hasn’t played above High-A ball with the enormous surplus of MIF depth already on the 40 man roster and that needs to be added in Rocchio and Freeman.

Kev- Tena gets protected if a deal isn’t finalized before the roster deadline. He can still be dealt later this offseason/ after the new CBA is finalized.
The reason: Tena has more value then the $100k R5 selection cost..

Maybe be could trade Tena to the Cubs for somebody like Owen Cassie. I don't think he would have to be protected.

Yes Owen Cassie is still a few years away from needing to be rostered for R5 protection. That is not the direction I am looking to go.
If I was looking for OF help in a couple of seasons I could always move Tena or others to the OF now to develop my own future replacements

My thought for dealing Tena now is to get a player that helps the 2022/ 2023 roster.
A higher value for Jose Tena at this point means less needs to added to get Ian Happ or perhaps Wilson C from the ChiCubs.

With a limited ChiCubs farm system & Carter Hawkins knowing the CLE system so well, there could be a match for CLE to get a piece it needs in 2022..

I am not against moving Tena/someone who needs protected but we don't have room for and doesn't fit into a trade before the Rule 5 draft... Mathias move/Even a Mercado move (aka two prospects for one) could easily happen here...

There are several orgs that have poor farm systems...

Cubs
Nats
Cardinals
Angels
Athletics
Brewers
Mets
Braves
Phillies
Yankees
Astros

Some align with us for trades. Some dont.

Though some may disagree, I think the Diamondback's system is worse than ours and could also use an injection of quality prospects.

The DBacks have a generally highly rated system.

Fangraphs has them rated fourth and us fifth.

But overall rankings don't matter as much as the way various farm systems are presently constructed and their MLB situation. Some systems are top heavy with MLB ready talent. Others are loaded with teenagers. Some have 40 man problems, while others have lots of room. Some teams are looking to contend. Some see themselves as a year away. And yet others are tearing down to the studs.

On the surface it looks like Arizona is going into at least a short term rebuild, but are they looking for upper level talent or lower level? Do they have a 40 man squeeze, or can they afford to take on R5 eligible prospects?

I dunno.

When outsiders look at us, they think that Jose should be available if only they throw enough prospects or young MLB vets at us. But unless we make a separate major four/five for one trade, we couldn't take on a boatload of 40 man eligible players.

I'd be looking at K.Marte in a deal with the D-backs.

DBax have a few excellent prospects that are worthy of consideration.. If the caveat is placed on prospects that would otherwise be unable to be pryed from a system.. The DBax have a couple that are, for all intents and purposes, untouchable (Jordan Lawler and Patrick Carroll)..

There are two that might be possibly traded for that can only be described as elite prospects:

Alek Thomas OF'er..
Blake Walston LHP..

Seth Beer too..but, he's not in either one of Thomas and Walston's league..

In case people missed it:

Baseball America has a story up (behind pay wall) regarding teams with roster crunches.

From the BA twitter:
Six teams facing roster logjams this week?
1. Rays
2. Guardians
3. Yankees
4. Twins
5. Dodgers
6. Pirates
@jjcoop36 explains how each could get out of it and examines potential trade partners.

My subscription has expired but if I renew I will post relevant CLE info..

I've got you, bro.

Cleveland currently sits at 36 players on the 40-man roster, so it has some room for additions. But it has nearly eight or more players who it needs to at least consider adding.

Shortstop/second baseman Tyler Freeman, shortstop Brayan Rocchio, shortstop Jose Tena, outfielder George Valera and catcher Bryan Lavastida all seem like logical additions.

Outfielder Oscar Gonzalez had a breakout season, hitting 31 home runs between Double-A and Triple-A. The Guardians thought enough about him to re-sign him and keep him from becoming a minor league free agent, but now they have to decide whether to protect him. Corner infielder Jhonkensy Noel hasn’t played above Class A yet, but he hit .340/.390/.615 this year. Center fielder Steven Kwan hit .328/.407/.527 between Double-A and Triple-A. Infielder Richie Palacios, righthander Cody Morris and lefthander Konnor Pilkington also have solid cases for protection.
