Rule 5 draft talk

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Clock is ticking.
What's your surprise name that is not on the 40 man?
Anybody think Yu Chang could be released. Good utility guy, but we should have plenty of those.

At 6PM tonight rosters have to be 'set' for R5.

What exactly does set mean?

Can players on the 40 man still be traded?

Can a team with a full 40 man drop a player if it signs a FA?

Or is every player on a 40 man frozen until after the R5?

I believe it means outside of trades or waiver wires your 40 man roster cannot be changed after that point. No contracts can be selected from the minors until after the Rule 5 draft regardless if the player was acquired via trade unless the player was acquired and added to the 40 man roster before the 6pm deadline...

Ernie Clement will be DFA'd before Yu Chang IMO

Other surprises - Carlos Vargas, Oscar Mercado

Some interesting potential news.

Apparently Oscar Gonzalez is not eligible to be picked in the Rule 5.
Guess there's a rule that once he was a FA and eligible to sign with any team, he becomes ineligible if he re-sign. Maybe they had an accord that he gets 40 roster salary.

Either way, it wouldn't have mattered, but he re-signed so quickly that I believe they had this smart deal in place to keep both sides happy.

My surprise is that we'll leave Kwan, Noel and maybe one of Cantillo/Pilkington(or DFA Vargas) exposed.

I hope we keep 11, but I see them adding only 8 or 9

Although many folks insisted that we didn't have a problem...

We have already lost F Perez. If we also lose prospects like Vargas and Noel without getting anything in return, that is a problem. If we lose a Pilkington or Cantillo without getting anything in return, we really have a problem.

And if we lose Mercado without getting anything in return, that is a problem.

Unlike players like Harold and Wittgren, these guys have trade value. Maybe not a lot, but some.

Realistically Clement is the only real "surprise" i could see DFA speaking. The other surprise would be NOT DFAing Harold.

Add-wise Surprise? Won't be adding Pilkington, Kwan, Tena and Noel in no particular order..

Edit.. I think they are working the phones hard today and a trade of some sort is a done deal. Could be major but anticipate a minor move for the purpose of decluttering the roster. Think Daniel Johnson for a bag of balls or Yu Chang for a lotto ticket - something like that.

Edit. - I guess DFAing one of Logan Allen or Sam Hentges is remotely possible as well.

Maybe that is a recent change becuz a couple of years ago Martin Cervanka was a MiLB free agent & signed with San Fran after the roster deadline.
Baltimore then drafted him in the minor league portion of the R5 a few weeks later..

So, in the end, most of the moves we thought the Indians were going to make, they made other than DFA Mejia and Garza and selecting Cantillo. It will be interesting if we can avoid losing Mejia/Garza and more I look at it Cantillo is a 50/50 shot at best.

Per MLBRumors -- https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/11/40-man-roster-roundup-2.html

1. Orioles (52-110) 3 spaces
2. D-backs (52-110) 1 space
3. Rangers (60-102) 3 spaces
4. Pirates (61-101) 0 spaces
5. Nationals (65-97) 1 space
6. Marlins (67-95) 0 spaces
7. Cubs (71-91) 3 spaces
8. Twins (73-89) 0 spaces
9. Royals (74-88) 0 spaces
10. Rockies (74-87) 1 space
11. Mets (compensation)*
12. Tigers (77-85) 1 space
13. Angels (77-85) 0 spaces
14. Mets (77-85) 3 spaces
15. Padres (79-83) 0 spaces
16. Cleveland (80-82) 0 spaces
17. Phillies (82-80) 1 space
18. Reds (83-79) 0 spaces
19. A’s (86-76) 6 spaces
20. Braves (88-73) 0 spaces
21. Mariners (90-72) 1 space
22. Cardinals (90-72) 4 spaces
23. Blue Jays (91-71) 2 spaces
24. Red Sox (92-70) 3 spaces
25. Yankees (92-70) 0 spaces
26. White Sox (93-69) 5 spaces
27. Brewers (95-67) 5 spaces
28. Astros (95-67) 1 space
29. Rays (100-62) 0 Spaces
30. Dodgers (106-56) 0 spaces
31. Giants (107-55) 0 spaces

So Texas, Cubs and Ranger will be the most troublesome ... probably taking 2 each. Oakland is probably always good for 1 along with Detroit, Colorado and Arizona. Washington will probably add FAs vs Rule 5 along with Mets. But, will there be 10 or fewer selections vs 18 last year and 14 in 2018 (2019 was 10 selections).

So, what is the likelihood that Cantillo is selected? Less than 50/50 - probably less if they kept him off over Noel. He throws in the low 90s and tops out at 94. He had bad command last year -- 11 walks in 13 innings due to not pitching really for 2 years. Its harder to stash a soft throwing lefty in the pen then a hard throwing Oviedo type. He like Moss/Morgan are a starter only on a team that has plenty of them knocking on the door.

Here are the top prospects that were rostered/not for each team.
Some other lefties
A Seth Cory SFG was only in A+ but showed a 93-95 mph in instructs.
Lopez from Tampa only has a few innings in AA but also was more consistent all year
Austin Cox from KC can dial it up to 95-96 and made it to AAA last year.
Ortiz from Dodgers had only 11 inn in A+ but another guy that brings heat
Walker from Mets -- not the heat but command and made it to AAA last year
Cruz from Pitts -- had a decent year in A+/AA last year

So there is a good group of LHP that will hopefully hid a Cantillo due to his injuries last year not giving people (other than Cubs) a good look at him.

And, what are the odds of Garza and Mejia slipping through waivers? Probably 50/50 one gets through - 20% both. There are a few teams like Cubs that can put them on their 40 only to remove them before Rule 5 if they need to make more selections than spaces available.

Just going to toss this out there now...
The Guardians still have a roster crunch for NEXT off-season with roughly a dozen guys worthy of consideration to get added (along with anyone that remains after the upcoming draft).

The list is from Guardians Prospective
