Rule 5 draft talk

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Honestly, I am a little sad about this part. It is just part of the excitement over seeing a young guy who has been overlooked succeed like Stephan and others last year.

And, even if we would have lost a Cantillo or Fermin or others this year, it wasn't going to be a big loss. Heck, losing Mejia was the biggest loss due to Rule 5 for me to get Plinkington on the roster -- if we would have known ... but its a business (should have never brought up Nelson in 2020 or Perez last year if you were not sure about them). There is no room to bring up a player just for a couple games anymore ... only to be removed for next year's Rule 5.

But, for those who said we shouldn't have rostered so many and would have had more room now ...

Kwan and Palacios are going to get a shot really quick in the OF .... One will be a starter come May no matter what we do in FA ... maybe even by April 8th.
If we add a major OF in FA, bye bye Mercado or Zimmer ( I won't shed a tear with Valera up next year)
For pitching depth ... we have Morris, Plink and Myer who can fill in for a RP that is injured for anything less than 60 day DL and be just as effective as a Perez or Nelson (remember Perez only finished 2019 in MV and started 2021 in Akron -- all this year guys have full year AA and some AAA experience).
If teams knew no Rule 5 in Nov, we would not have gotten Myer from TB ... so is Myer > Mejia, Nelson and Perez .... FO thinks so (and Pilk as he was added with Mejia being cut). So was Mejia a big loss anymore?

And, we will lose someone with all the roster juggling that the Guardians will have to do with injuries this year, but would that person have made it past next year's Rule 5 crunch? Clement/Chang/Mercado/Zimmer are in their final year unless something happened over the winter. That is the real cost of this Rule 5 change this year. If Myers is a back-end starter or back-end reliever, no one will shed a tear after this year.

I was hoping to see the rule 5 as well, just cause I am always curious what will happen...

Clement though still has two options left, so I am not exactly sure why he got added to that list otherwise I agree with a far amount of what you said. I am pretty sure it is Mercado over Zimmer at this point since we have so many lefties competing for the OF...

As you saw with Nelson and Perez, options don't matter to Guardians when trying to piece together the 40-man puzzle. Clement is just on the list as 1 of 4 guys who can be cut to create extra roster room to call-up someone off 40-man (or sign someone) when other injuries happen during year. Just pointing out, that even though people are disappointed in Rule 5 being dropped after we added everyone, the cuts we would make to create more room beyond first 2 opening day spots are NOT going to cost Guardians a playoff chance in the future (won't even probably get to a 1 WAR difference). By season end, we have Freeman, Arias and Rocchio all knocking on the door. Heck, Giminez maybe our utility guy come 2023 (with Ramirez, Rocchio/Arias, Freeman at 3rd, SS and 2nd). So what do we lose by cutting Clement soon (due to protecting a Noel or other)?

The only real loss is the first year option in 2023 for guys like Valera, Rocchio, Tena and Noel whose decisions could have been pushed off to next year to be added (but will any of them need all 3 options?). Most of the other guys Palacios, Kwan, Plinkington, Myers and Morris would have been added at some point this year anyways to try to make team better (even as a reliever filling in for an injury and thereby getting low pressure MLB experience at same time). Remember, we will be adding another 6-10 players at year-end again (barring any trade) -- some almost slam dunks are Martinez, Naylor, Curry, Hankins, Battenfield and Torres with Cantillo, Miko, Brennan, etc.... getting a look see.

I get that, but Nelson struggled in 21 and Perez had some medical issues so both may not have been worth keeping on paper. We just lack bullpen arms in the upper minors so for depth reasons I would have liked to keep them...

I think we almost have to make a trade sometime between this season and next season to be able to make the best team and keep as much talent as possible personally, but I don't disagree it would have been nice to keep the guys who are farther away off the 40 man...

Also I am higher on Clement than anyone else here so I don't have him on the cut list. We have so many MIFs and utility guys, it's hard to say who will survive at the end with all those guys.

Clement is a clear cut candidate - sry Sportscoach.

Valera is a lot closer than he is on paper

Kwan or Palacios makes the team out of ST - maybe both if we don't acquire a new OFer...

No rule 5 - Cantillo is now an extra interesting lotto ticket/rebound candidate etc.. - a perfect quality roster worry free addition in a deal.

OGonz may end up in the NL before we know it.

You had me until Oscar... I would like to know how he is doing during ST. Of course, the issue with him is the offspeed recognition/swing adjustment. I have a feeling if he crushed a few tape-measure bombs off the early fastball tendencies of pitchers in ST in Arz, we would have seen some videos come out already. He has had some time now in front of Tito and others hitting coaches where it was the perfect time to break out and at least earn the right to stick around when the big boys come out to play. Will see early if he gets into a game before the 5th inning soon (showing the management saw a glimpse of an ability to hit the MLB pitchers vs just AAAA pitchers).

If he ends up traded it won't be for much - but if there are any NL teams out there who need a backup/plan C for DH he may fit the bill.

I did look at twitter-uverse and saw the tape measure shot in ST ... but it wasnt Oscar. Be very telling who gets into first 2-3 ST mlb games in mopup duty ... Benson, Oscar, Call, Johnson or Brennan. I assume Valera will get some hacks as Jones did last year.

#Guardians 23yr old OF prospect Will Benson crushing baseball's in intrasquad action out in minor league spring training.

Oscar might not even be stateside at the moment he is probably at home in the DR. But...

Maybe not.. He isn't rostered so maybe he is in Arizona IDK.
