Rule 5 Talk 23

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I comped Enright to Karinchak. Same delivery, same FB/curve combo. Enright does have a 3rd pitch to offset the velocity gap a bit and he's got better control. I believe this one will hurt. Kelly too, especially going to Tampa

Looking at Battenfields numbers last season...

His K/9 was cut in half and his BB/9 doubled. Thats more than hitting a wall. Nobody drops off that dramatically, unless he is hurt, which wasn't the case.

Reports indicated that he was working on stuff and revamping a lot of things....perhaps a case of taking one step back in order to take two steps forward.

It happens a lot in almost all sports. A revamped golf swing, a makeover of a tennis backhand. A player that was good changes the way he/she does a part of their game in order to become better.

Civale did it two years ago, but his injuries have hampered the process. Maybe this year we will learn the results.

But Battenfields drop off is extraordinary.

*******

Hopefully, something clicks. But his time is short. Its short for kids like Curry and Gaddis, too...but Battenfield has dropped way behind.

At this time next year, hopefully, we will have Espino, Morris, Williams, and Bibee, or whoever is left of them...all coming off healthy years this time...and all ready to join a MLB rotation.

As ST is about to start and FG listed Tampa prospects with Kelly, I thought put his summary here. He is listed as their 27th prospect with a 40 grade. Their 40s run from 21 to 32. In perspective, Faucher another reliever of theirs was 31 rank last year (29 before year end) and had a rough mlb start (-.3 war and 5.48 ERA). White is another reliever projected in AAA is ranked 14th. Thus, Enright has to stay above them all year with Chirinos and Flemming also listed as SP/RP (Flemming relieved several mlb games last year) with similar prospect grades last year. They also have a lot of NRIs coming into compete. See what happens

For reference, our 40s run 22 to 39 with Gaddis at 37. Battenfield, Miko and Misa are all in 35+ group.

Tampa Bay’s 2022 Rule 5 pick from Cleveland, Kelly is a sidearm reliever with east/west command of a fastball/slider combination that has given hitters fits at each minor league level. He posted a 1.11 ERA at Akron during the first half of the 2022 season and a 2.73 mark at Columbus in the second, but the Guardians didn’t add him to their 40-man and the Rays popped him in the Rule 5. His fastball bores in toward the knees of right-handed hitters and is difficult to square up even though Kelly only sits 90-92 mph. The pitch generates a ton of groundballs; Kelly has never run a groundball rate south of 50%, and he is almost impossible to elevate. Even though his delivery is pretty whacky, he still has solid glove-side control of his slider. He isn’t Sergio Romo or anything, but he tends to live on the outer half and stay away from damage, missing the occasional bat against righties who just don’t see that pitch out of his hand. There’s enough here for Kelly to stick on Tampa Bay’s roster as a middle-inning option all throughout 2023, a great option out of the bullpen when you need a groundball to get out of a jam.
