Summer League Game 1: Charlotte vs. Cleveland , Sunday, July 15 2012, 8:30pm EST

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
The Bobcats certainly played with intensity on the defensive end during the second half...... No excuses for bad/lazy defense, ever.

Agreed its no excuse, but I'm confident it will get fixed by game 1

I'm not going to judge Waiters (although he has got to stop falling back for no reason on his shots) And I don't do it because everyone on that floor, with the exception Zeller, for both the Cavs and Bobcats were all hot garbage.

Waiters being a 4th pick in a draft, i should have seen glimpses of more. I didn't. I know it's one game, but i didn't see one thing he excelled in.

One game, especially a summer league one at that, is certainly no reason to panic.
I will say that Waiters looks a little pudgy to me. I hope his weight doesn't become an issue. He looks like he could stand to lose a good 10 lbs.

Maybe Sam-Sam can give him some pointers before coach Scott does. He is not going to like it much if he shows up to training camp in that shape. He will be much better by then I guarantee it. Sam-Sam will let him know it.

There a highlight package out yet?

Man, some of you guys are harsh towards Dion. He didn't really show up defensively and missed some jumpers, but the playmaking ability/potential was clearly there I thought. He set up tons of open looks for other guys (who just happen to suck) and showed he's gifted in p&r situations. His slashing and 1v1 repertoire looked insane on the few occasions he went for it fully. I'm excited to see what kind of damage he can do when he's actually focused on defense and more aggressive on offense/knocking down open shots.

Dion was unimpressive, but equally unimpressive was Tristan Thompson.

Biyombo showed some promise on a few post moves 1on1 that he didnt have last year. Even with that little spin and throw the ball at the rim thing that Tristan scored on, he still didnt show any "feel" for the game. Thats what concerns me with him.

I think Biyombo is already ahead of Tristan in development. That frustrates me.

Floor spacing might have hurt Dion also, just saying. The whole court looked cluttered when we were on offense, which is normal for a SL game, everytime someone would drive to the hoop, the paint would be packed or someone waiting to draw a charge. It would be hard to get to the rim with those conditions...

I've been thinking lately that Kyrie's finger break is a blessing in disguise. Pretty insignificant injury when you consider the contrary. We already know the kid is for real, he doesn't need to be playing in summer league games. He needs to be in that weight room trying to get stronger.

How does one lift weights with a broken hand?

The contrary would have been no hand injury. :chuckles:

I think it's terrible for the Cavs summer league plans because as Byron Scott, there was no plan B. There are so many players whose games count on, or complement, Kyrie's game. There is no doubt that it is a setback in terms of development, not a blessing of any kind. It's also not the end of the world. It will give the staff more time to evaluate Sloan and also to see what Waiters can do with the ball in his hands. We'll see if Waiters starts leading the team, as he sometimes started to do tonight. He was tentative sometimes, but also showed signs or stepping forward. In general, it will be good to see whether other players can step up their games as needed. A few players played pretty well. Some others, named Thompson, Waiters, and every single SF, need to come up bigger. Game to game, it will also be interesting to see which players get it. If Waiters actually puts in more effort on defense this week, that will be a good step...

Wouldn't call it a blessing in disguise, though. Maybe it is a week-long opportunity that some players can't afford to miss.
