Summer League Game 1: Charlotte vs. Cleveland , Sunday, July 15 2012, 8:30pm EST

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Waiters being a 4th pick in a draft, i should have seen glimpses of more. I didn't. I know it's one game, but i didn't see one thing he excelled in.

Oh come on. You know who else had a bad summer league...Derrick Rose. I am sure there is a whole list of bad summer league players who are now solid NBA players. I bet there is an even longer list of guys who rocked the summer league and are now working at the Waffle House.

Dion just looks like he's trying too hard out of the gate. Nothing I feel was unacceptable about his play, you've just got to keep everything in perspective. I cannot believe how many reputable posters are worried right now. Dion is a player the Cavaliers haven't really had in a while, so his style of play is riskier than we're used to. One thing I did see with Waiters, though, is that he seemed to be playing at a higher pace than most of the guys on the floor and that is something that will translate to more than some of these guys playing well within the game. What translates? That is the question we need to be asking ourselves while watching.

On a side note, thanks to everyone who put up a stream. Could you please do it tonight so I can watch?

Dion was unimpressive, but equally unimpressive was Tristan Thompson.

Biyombo showed some promise on a few post moves 1on1 that he didnt have last year. Even with that little spin and throw the ball at the rim thing that Tristan scored on, he still didnt show any "feel" for the game. Thats what concerns me with him.

I think Biyombo is already ahead of Tristan in development. That frustrates me.

I came here looking for a box score- what i got was a bunch of neurotic dickbags breaking down an entire summer league game.
No joke: You, and everyone else in this thread, needs to seriousy calm their ass the fuck down. we know you hate TT. If he puts up 22/22 next summer league game (whoot whooot), then what: champaigne time??? Cmon.

And FYI, for those complaining about DW: turn off the PC or laptop and stick your fucking head in a vitamix.

EDIT: Wow, this came off rather cunty. Did not intend for that to happen - my bust. :D

Damage, I think your assessment was spot on.
It was crass but people need to come to grips with the fact it was 1 summer league game. Also, it takes big men 2,3,4 years to develop. And TT was a project to begin with. Jonas Valaciunas hasn't done shit yet in the NBA.

Can we give the man a Amen! AMEN!!

While it is premature to judge Tristan, and it may even be premature to do so a year from now, it is still disappointing to see that he doesn't seem to have a great feel for the game offensively. Biyombo looked more comfortable with the ball in his hands and Biyombo was projected to be the rawest of the raw (and also a guy I was pushing for...).

I'd like to see TT get more opportunities in the low post tonight, last night was mostly mid/high post. He did have one nice running hook shot that looked more fluid than anything I've seen from him, but a few plays later he tried to force the same thing and it looked awkward.

Re-reading this thread the overreaction to slight criticism of a summer league game is hilarious... no one's calling Waiters a bust (except maybe trolls.)

The people who really need to calm down are Grant's butt buddies that can't take any sort of criticism of their infallible basketball Jesus- 6th man on the court, number 1 in their hearts- Dion Waiters.

(Now you have MY overreaction and whining about the people whining about other people whining. You're welcome.)

Kinda unbecoming of a poster I've show mad respect to. Pm'ing well wishes with your health and all that.

I dont engage in this kind of shit. A little to emotional for my blood.

Its becoming unreadable.

And I dont understand how analyzing a summer league performance is any different than looking for a box score from the same league or checking a single stat line to see production.

If you are going to marginalize the competition and results, then why check for it or engage in a discussion about it.

Even if you just look at as if it is a workout/practice... you are looking for development and potential that carries over to real games.

Ive never seen a player Ive coached do something in a game that he was not capable of doing in a scrimmage with ease

I actually thought Tristan palyed better than Biyombo. When he played Biyombo the dude rarely scored on him. I also liked how he attacks the basket and he seem to really have that good touch around the rim since those running off balanced hooks can be said to be in his repertoire and not just some lucky throws.

I love the overanalyzing of summer league games. For that matter, I love when RCF cares enough to have summer league game threads. And it's going to happen 4 more times this week. There's a lot of quality stuff here. Compare this thread to some of the regular season game threads (TRADE FOREIGN WEAK SAUCE!!!! or "Stop scoring, Harangody. We need this loss").

What I don't like is when posters attack other individuals or groups of posters because they disagree. I try to stay away from deleting game thread posts (and summer game league thread posts), but will do so if things just get nasty tonight. I would have deleted Damage's message, but he rated it correctly himself in his P.S. Not right to shut discussion down. Rchfld didn't deserve that crap, even though I think he was overestimating Biyombo.

No no no, you are certainly the better man in this situation. As I stated, that came off WAY WAY worse than I typed it (I always type with a smile, my brother). And honestly the post wasn't directed at you (sans the TT part :chuckles: )

Mad apologies - mad respect. However, my point still stands in that it is ridiculous for ANYONE to judge a player after 1 summer league game (Kanye Shrug)

With the in your face, need it now tech age we're in, the instant snap analysis is utterly insane (for good and bad reasons alike). Ill start worrying when Waiters looks terrible mid way through his rookie year.
