The 2021 Cleveland Baseball Organization

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
No, the start after the no-no he had given up 2 hits through 7 and walked the first batter in the 8th and got pulled. Especially after an 8 inning start (the near no-no), I don't know what they were thinking.
He's always had durability issues. Some on this board wanted to include him in a trade package because of those issues. I think Hale has managed him correctly though, he's not even over 100 IP, he's had a terrific stretch and I think we are seeing why he's limited in his own right. He's looked next level, he's looked like he's ready to take the leap, then back to his injury woes. Do we put training wheels on him next year to prevent injuries? Maybe we should really think about a 6 man rotation considering our starting pitchers going down like flies. Work them all into a rhythm while including Morgan as the 6th man.

I actually think the training wheels will be taken off next season...

I don't think we will consider a 6 man rotation while we are in contention, but you could see it when we aren't....

There's no reason to look at it like "training wheels". His ceiling may be as a SP that can give you 6 very good innings on average, and if you pitch him more he is likely to get hurt and it's not worth the risk when you can just pull him. The rotation as a whole is showing durability issues so it certainly isn't isolated to him (I think Bieber was overpitched as well). But there's nothing wrong with going to the pen an inning or two earlier and taking a load off the starters. There's a reason why average innings per start goes down pretty much every year - teams are catching on and pitcher performance deteriorates each time through the lineup, a data-proven fact.

Geez.

It’s not that serious everyone, relax a bit. Hiccup in his maintenance routine and was already out on the waves on Monday.
Wouldn’t be a fun board without instant panic, hot takes, and drama. I am as guilty as anyone on these.

Its not innings that count, its pitches...and pitches within the context of how stressful they are.

TMac has thrown 100 pitches in a game one time, the no hit bid. And they were all in non stress situations.

Don't think I agree with this. I expect a TOR guy to be a 200+ innings guy & my concern with Tmac and his body build will he ever be able to handle that?

On average, ~15 guys per season throw 200+ innings over the last decade.

The 200 IP "ace" & "workhorse" doesn't really exist around the league anymore. Inability to get to 200+ IP shouldn't be a concern at all.

Also, kid pitched 33 competitive innings last year, his body is still changing, and they know he is an important part of their future. They're going to be as precautious as possible with him, as they have been with farm hands this year, following the weirdness of 2020.

It not only the limited innings in 2020. Its the lack of innings in 2019 after missing parts of 2018..
There is nothing wrong being cautious here, returning for a couple more appearances during September and then entering the off-season healthy and ready to contribute in 2022 (assuming there is a season)..

I wouldn't be surprised if they shut him down for the rest of the season. Don't think they do, think they were being cheeky getting him extra rest before the rosters expand, but wouldn't surprise me either.

And no, this is not me saying his injury is worse than "shoulder fatigue". It's managing his workload and protecting someone who has a chance to be one of the best pitchers in baseball. At 120 IP on the season after the aforementioned limited innings in the year prior it makes sense to pump the brakes a little.

If Pedro Martinez and Oil can Boyd could with similar body types , TMac can as well despite his injury history

So what will be his limit? I don't expect any of our SP to reach 200 IP going forward, more like 170-180 IP. Thing is, I question Triston's ability to do that for a few more years.

There's currently only 12 pitchers in Major League Baseball right now above 150 innings this season: Wheeler, Buehler, Wainwright, Alcantara, Greinke, Giolito, Ray, Hendricks, Woodruff, Bassitt, Castillo, and Marquez. Bassitt will probably be lucky to pitch again this season after his injury. Kind of interesting though that out of those 12, only 4 are from the AL.

I can see him consistently going 160-170 until his K numbers drop. He was on pace for that figure this season until now. If what is being said is true, and he is back for the KC series, he's going to most likely end up right around 150 IP this season. And he did that while unable to throw a strike for about half of those innings pitched.

Like I said though, especially with Civale coming back soon and potentially Bieber a few weeks from now (though this wouldn't make sense considering how they've treated his injury to this point), I wouldn't be surprised if they shut him down.

Bimbo - have you heard how the organization has viewed Hale since taking over for Terry? I'd be curious some names they'd be interested in if Tito doesn't come back next season. Hale wouldn't be on my list.
