The 2021 Cleveland Baseball Organization

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Just about every player that had a significantly increasing salary was traded or allowed to sign elsewhere.. no wonder the payroll was soooo low.. it can only go in one direction.. nothing new here..

Very few of the players actually are due raises in 22, look it up... If they are saying adding payroll, it will either be through extensions or spending money via FA or trading for a player. I feel like this says they are budgeting for the extensions...

Aside from Jose and Berto...both with options...these players go to arby.

Hedges
Amed
Wittgren
Bieber
Franmil
Zimmer, if he is retained....which I expect.
Quantrill
Harold, if he is retained...which I dont expect.

Assuming we pick up both options for Jose and Berto, my WAG is that raises will total about $18 mil. We are probably gonna get a break on Biebs, because of his injury.

If the option on Berto is not picked up, and we either resign him at a lower amount or replace him, that figure may drop to around $15 mil.

Assuming we don't keep Shaw and Parker to go along with Eddie and Cesar, we save about $16 mil over our opening day payroll, so that should offset the raises.

I know folks think that the payroll will...or should... jump to $85-90 mil, I don't see it. My WAG is about $65 mil. So the FO will have about $15 mil to play with for a combination of extensions and additions.

The FO has to also plan for 2023, when ten players now on the roster...not including Harold...will be in arby...and, if we don't sign a catcher past 2022, we won't have a veteran catcher.

I have no idea what the FO will do with $15 mil, but its fairly obvious that they would like to extend Jose and Bieber, and maybe Franmil. How much any extensions would bleed off part of that $15 mil is beyond even a WAG.

But one fortunate thing going into the off season is that what seems to be our biggest immediate need...a productive bat that plays a corner outfield spot/1B...is about the least expensive position in free agency.

..likely a return by Lavarnway, if he's able.. but, and it's only a small maybe... a shock promotion of Lavastida.. anyone else will require a 40 man roster move..as well..

Lavarnway would require a 40 man move as well.
IIRC - If he was still on the 40 man roster he would have been unable to play in the Olympics for Israel...

Meh deal. They've dealt for this Cash Considerations multiple times over the years and he's never amounted to anything. About the only thing he does is take members of the FO out to dinner.

So 40 man roster has 42 players with 3 on 60 day, so sitting 39. Ramos goes on 60 day or cut (but probably after season) so 38. You can easily add Lavarnway or Rivera and then cut them (again) when Perez is ready (and hopefully before we add Bieber back or someone else will need to be cut as Civale would be 39 and Bieber 40 w/o additional catcher. Yet, cuts are coming anyways in Nov.

This "Brad Peacock deal" is important in a different manner..

It opens playing time at AAA for someone else.
There was word earlier today that Joey Cantillo is being called up to Akron to get some legit playing time before the end of the season.
This would indicate that someone (Hillman?? Adam Scott?? Battenfield?? Pilkington?? Someone else??) get the change to move up to AAA for some opportunities..

That is a good thing & something all fans should be happy with..

I think Peacock was brought in as possible...not probable...help, if we remained in contention, but that ship has sailed, so its like Mad said.

Keep in mind Civale is about to be back and someone is going to be bumped back down.

Considering the amount of filler arms that have been and still are in AAA - this maybe the firs domino to fall. At some point I hope they dump Koch, Fillmyer, Young, etc and move guys up for a final month of work. Even Hillman semi-deserves a callup, more of a thank you than a promotion
