The Brian Hoyer thread...

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
If you don't see what Luck has done with that supporting cast and come away impressed, you don't know what to look for.

On to Hoyer, I don't think his arm is below average from what I've seen. He doesn't have a cannon like Weeden or Vinny Testaverde, but I don't see a hindrance.

Agree. The more impressive thing about Hoyer though is his touch. The throw to Cameron for the GW TD was a thing of beauty. He had at least 4 or 5 completions yesterday that I'm not sure if Weeden completes.

My opinion has been consistent on Weeden: Great arm, but those years away from the game put him at a huge disadvantage for the feel of the pocket. I never thought he should have been a first round pick because of it. Hoyer, on the other hand, is a real NFL quarterback. He might be a Matt Cassell / Gus Ferrotte type of second stringer, but he can run an NFL offense. I can't say that for many of the Browns signal callers since 1999. People can put Minnesota's defense down, especially as they suffered injuries, but they only had to prepare to stop the pass in the second half. The Browns were no threat to run the ball. Being that predictable in the NFL is suicide, and Hoyer still pulled it off.

Mechanical wise I'll say this, it seems he picked up a thing or two from Brady. His first TD throw to Gordon was a vintage like Brady type of throw.

I am in no way seriously suggesting he's Tom Brady as a talent, but I can tell the guy definitely studied under a great Quarterback and has picked up a thing or two on how to play the position.

I don't remember Weeden getting fake punt calls or fake field goal calls, which helped bail him out.

It's obviously the right decision. The man earned it and as a sixth year player is still younger than the sophomore he's replacing.

I think Hoyer comes back to earth this week... the Bengals are a far cry from a bad Vikings defense missing their starting CB. If he manages to play well though, I might start to buy in.

Even if he proves just to be a solid guy not worth starting every week and we draft a guy #1 next year, he's shown enough that I'd still keep him as the backup over Weeden and move Weeds out for whatever we can get. Hoyer is cheaper, way more experienced and 2 years younger than him. If that doesn't say what a terrible, terrible pick Weeden was, I don't know what can.

Terrible is too good of a word to describe the Weeden pick.

If we can get our run game going, like at all, you would think some play-action would really open things up for Hoyer. Over/under on a Cleveland back netting more than 50 yards this week?

This is where Chud earns his money as a supposed brilliant game planner. I think the answer is delayed draws and bubble screens, getting away from traditional two back sets. Let's see how it goes, because you have to keep the Bengals excellent defense honest.
