The Sexland Experiment

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
yep I've been telling people the stock market is going to crash this year for the last 90 days too
I guess you are just going to have to wait and see. Maybe after getting him in house they realized they got a absolute steal at 5 if that were possible , but the truth is his value was not what they thought it was and won't be until he proves it at the next level.
There is very little chance him and Sexton can play together , but maybe in the Michigan mans offense they can co exist

I mean, you're just entirely wrong is all. They did not draft Garland with the intention of trading him. They had been tracking Garland heavily in the week leading up to the draft and they flew out the entire brass to his private workout in L.A. Once the Davis trade went down and it became clear they would have a chance to draft him, he was frankly in his own tier on top of their big board when it came time to make the decision.

They see him as their starting PG for the next hopefully 10+ years. They also believe he has superstar upside.

Believe me, they LOVE Collin and were very encouraged by the second half of last season. They wouldn't have made a move for another smaller guard without superseding belief he was absolutely the best player left in the draft.

You say this word, "truth", but I do not think it means what you think it means.
think again then , Garland has a lot to live up to and there is a significant chance he is the bust of the lottery if he proves to be injury prone.

I agree that is what they thought and now that they did not get the calls they expected to get flooding in for him, they have to step back and question themselves. Everyone taken in the lottery is trade bait when you already have a player of the future at the same position. If they just took him with every intention of keeping him on the premise no one taken after had as much potential that goes hand and hand with value in trades.

I never said anything about how good Garland would be

Sorry have not been able to post much as I just had a baby boy.

Nice thread in starting Sexland. I am one of the few who believes the NBA will change where more teams will start to have 2 playmakers at the guard spots and be able to shoot from outside. Shooting from outside is so important. Assuming the 3 pt line does not get extended, the mid range game is getting not much usage and is about spreading the floor, utilizing quickness, ball movement, and shooting. Very excited for our offense and how they play will play and adapt to each other. I love Sexton and I love Garland. Having Cedi, Love, and Nance together is going to be exciting to watch.

...but the truth is his value was not what they thought it was and won't be until he proves it at the next level.

Huh? You're saying they thought his value was, say, an A+ but now they've realized it's a C...and it won't be an A+ until he proves it "at the next level"? As in pro ball? How is that different from any other draft pick? And why would they want to trade him now if they think he's capable of proving he's an A+? None of that makes any sense.

Anyway, I'm not entirely sold on the pairing, but I'd have been a lot more worried if Sexton hadn't improved his shot last year. And I think he at least has the potential to improve defensively at the 2 more than PG by guarding passing lanes with that wingspan of his.

As always, I'm rooting for Sexland.

I watched the full version of Garland's run and his defense is pretty bad. I know it's just practice and all, but It's tough seeing how Sexton and Garland can co-exist defensively.
I'd love to watch it. Though what do we do if it's total failure?

I think each of them can turn out to be an all-star when separate. But it doesn't work like this. Hmm, a Shai gilgeous alexander or Miles Bridges would have been fantastic pairing. I liked them both.

But yeah, I think whatever happens we need to not turn it into a Dennis Smith Jr situation, and if we do intend to trade Sexton eventually we need to make sure his stock is high. Obviously I want them to succeed together, and I hope one of them has a growth spurt.

Hand wrunging aside, we have no real data on Garland.. Sexton took a lot of shit for rookie learning curve last year, but figured it out and surprised a lot of people at the end of the season. I think he will be an active and durable guard, sort of on the George Hill train. This is great for an 8 pick..

I think the Cavs went to Vegas on Garland. He looks similar to Kyrie which has good news and Bad. If he can stay healthy, and he is Kyrie Junior, the pick is a home run. But " If If's and Ands were pots and pans, there'd be no work for tinkers.."..

So we will wait and see. I think the Cavs will limit his minutes and focus on building strength this year.. we will be back in the lottery, and we will start trading our chips to build the right team.. This year is an extended tryouts for borderline bigs essentially.

I’d say regardless of how talented a player is, probably 10% of star level rookies play good defense? Does that sound about right?

I’m not talking about guys with 3d futures who have to play d to hang on. Rather guys who have real futures in the league.

Defense at the NBA level nowadays is nigh impossible anyways, much less for rookies playing 82 games for the first time. That’s not really a decider for me unless a guy sucks on offense. I’d start looking at defense a couple years in.

It's not about Garland's individual defense. I couldn't care less on an individual level, it's just that when paired with Sexton it becomes much more of a big thing as a collective unit and 'might' be detrimental to future success.

To me it is on Bickerstaff and Beilein. They need to figure it out. They should have a couple years to do so.

Solely? how?

I just think this whole defense thing is not put in the proper perspective. The poor defense from last year did not come out of nowhere. The defense on the finals team the year before was also horrendous. The people in charge of the defense were never able to cobble together a suitable defense, unless Lue took the reins.

I have seen teams of "bad defenders" play good or great defense with the proper scheme, and I have seen good defenders get burned repeatedly because no one helps them.

Mike Brown had the #1 defense with Drew Gooden at PF. If it's not on the coaches, then the team is hopeless and they should just get rid of everyone and start drafting for defensive upside.
