A lot has been made of the Sexton/Garland backcourt pairing and what it will mean to the team. Mostly it has been in regards to the defense and whether Sexton can really guard the 2.
Really 2 guard is one of the weakest positions in the league right now. Because scoring from the 1 is so popular now, the 2 is generally relegated as a catch and shoot type of player on most teams. I really don't think it is that big of an issue except Collin needs to stop penetration which he has been terrible at. I don't think many 2's are going to be taking him in the post.
What about Offensively? How is it going to work?
Pros as I see them are:
Collin and Garland are really good catch and shoot guys and Garland started playing basketball as the off guard so he gets to his spots when he doesn't have the ball.
If they both have 3-4 assists a game they can play the pg by committee. I actually think between Cedi, Love, and Nance along with these 2 guys we should have enough playmakers. I actually prefer it because it is more unpredictable than one of them setting up every time.
Collin is better going to the rim and is faster, Garland is shiftier and can break the defense down with his dribble. I think this wears defenses out.
Spacing should be fantastic with both on the court at the same time similar to Kyrie/JR.
Collin showed a willingness to screen and that could be pretty cool.
garland is supposed to be a better passer than he has shown. I think that is funny that he is supposed to be great while doing less in College than Collin, but that's what his coaches say. They are both good passers in the open floor, and that is nice when running a high pace and having Cedi and Windler on the wing, who both run the floor well along with TT and Nance.
Cons: It's all defense and size. I'll admit I had a feeling of dread when they first called Garland's name. I want guys bigger than their position, but that is not what we have. How willing of a passer is Garland. Is he going to settle for contested jump shots every time down the floor. The biggest problem is going to be sharing the ball and pg responsibilities. If either guy isn't giving it up, the iso-ing can snowball in a hurry. Hopefully Beilein's system will curtail this. Collin had a tendency to ignore the bigs on the roll. IF both of them do this, it is going to get ugly and they will be much easier to cover. Let's hope they both develop some chemistry with Love and Zizic who should both be able to get very easy shots off action by both Garland and Sexton.
What am a I missing here?
