So one thing I really like about Valhalla (I've only played it for about an hour to an hour and a half, so still in the intro which is set in Norway) is that they've basically gotten rid of character levels. Instead, you simply have a power level that indicates how many ability points you've invested into your character. It essentially streamlines the leveling system by removing an unnecessary number. I've only unlocked two abilities so far, so I'm at level three. Quest difficulty is indicated by power level as well.
Apparently they've also sort of simplified the side quest system so you'll find a lot of shorter random encounters that give you a bit more insight into the world and the people inhabiting it. I've only encountered one of those so far, and it was finding an old man with dementia who had apparently spent some time in England and he offers some tidbits of historical lore that will surely come into play later, talking about King Alfred and some of the English kingdoms. Having watched The Last Kingdom, I'm already relatively aware of a lot of this, as it takes place during roughly the same time period and also heavily features Alfred. And if you haven't watched The Last Kingdom, fucking load up Netflix and get to work because it's awesome.
Oh, and you can respec your character whenever you want in this game, which is pretty awesome. If you decide halfway through the game that you want to be more of a stealth character, you can. About fucking time games let you do something like this without consequence, like having to pay a fee in in-game currency like a lot of RPGs make you.
