Tondo's 2023 Top 100 Guardians prospects

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
49 2B/CF Nate Furman

Furman (along with Guy Lipscomb) was one of my favorite "Kwan-List" mid round sleepers going into the 2022 draft. The qualifiers for that list are: strong performance track record, lopsided BB/K ratio, hit/speed combo yet still ranked outside all top 200 draft lists. Furman checked all those boxes and as cherry on top was very young for his class as a true Sophomore, so CLE felt comfortable securing him in round 4 (121st overall) of the draft.

Furman starred at UNC Charlotte from day 1 and after 2 years and 420 PA there he left with a 351/482/468 slash and 71/41 BB/K.
He also got a lot of summer league action with wooden bats and against better competition. In 352 PA combined over 3 different summer leagues his bottom line is almost a copy of his college one: 344/483/453 and 66/43 BB/K
In college and summer ball combined he stole 61 bases in 70 attempts.

These numbers highlight his strengths and weaknesses. He's a consistently good contact hitter with good speed. FanGraphs grades both as potentially 70 (plus plus) at maturity. Otoh, he doesn't have any power and his EV aren't high. But, like Kwan, high end EV are less important when you consistently make solid contact. Or, as one draft profile put it: Furman consistently ranks among the elite in college baseball in terms of contact rates and chase rates. He protects the zone beautifully, even if the impact with the bat isn't quite present.
Defensively, Furman is considered a pure 2B, though some believe he'll not stick there and foresee a move to CF, so there's some Richie Palacios risk in his defense profile.

Entering his first pro season, Furman is another slasher, hit and run type prospect worth following closely. He will probably open at class A Lynchburg, but should also get significant A+ playing time if all goes according to plan.
I came very close to putting him in my Honorable Mention group. He is sort of a Ernie Clement plus at the plate and Ernie Clement minus in the field for me at the moment.

Nice write up here on a Amed that gives at least an inkling why Tito trusts him in the # 2 spot..

@Tondo just wondering what you see with Hajjar. He seems like a lefty Cody Morris with the bad stuff amplified. In theory he can be good if [a bunch of unlikely stuff happens] but isn't that the case with everyone?

Just looking at this list makes me realize how barren the farm system is without the 3 SPs and Bo. Really we have to count on guys like Francisca or Chourio, who are just so far off.

High on Brito … is that because he js that good or is a lack of bats in the organization ?

Both...

An extremely consistent track record, with signs of improvement is very encouraging. Not many hitters have stepped up their game so far this year whether it is performance, injuries, etc. Lots of rookie ball talent though, we'll have a few people climbing the ladder next year IMO.

Be high on him... Starting to think he's the best pure offensive player we currently have.. A healthy/producing DeLauter would say something about this.

Hajjar ranking is based half as draft prospect and half off a start I saw. He's got the chance for 3 pitches to be above average (55). Command isn't there yet, but he was around the zone. He's a big lefty coming off injury, so he'll get a pass for now. He can be as good as Cantillo.

At first glance I thought the same about the system, but really just the names changed. With such a young roster at the top, it's only natural that the new top talents are at lower levels. Those bats have some serious upside though.

Update

1B Manzardo is a FV 55 (60) and slots in right behind Rocchio at the top

SS K. Watson is a FV 45 (55) and I'd put him right behind Delauter

hmm... until he learns to recognize pitches better.. I'd suggest Khalil Watson is closer to Tena or Tolentino territory.. (upper teens/low 20's)..
