Upcoming Roster Moves

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
And you have no proof of that claim, and at no point am I crying for high power low OBP guy. Not once so I have no idea WTF you're talking about.

My sample is crap? Which sample are you referring to? I haven't given a "sample". I looked at an extremely large sample size and showed the results a couple of months ago. No opinion in results and no hypotheticals as you are providing, but you keep on keeping on.

1 extra HR per 8 games is over 20 HR in a 162 game season. You don't think that production will help any of the hitters before or after in the lineup. You don't think Jose or Franmil will benefit from a hitter with some power behind them? You don't think those 20+ HR will drive in any other runs or win any games?
The price on high power high OBP guys is high to the point where you'd be making a big move for one of them.

Your sample is looking at the winners of the World Series for 10 or 20 years, rife with all kinds of interfering noise which obfuscates any statistical causal relationships to the point of an indiscernible signal. That's crap. As opposed to looking to thousands of plate appearances and determining what batting outcomes actually produce runs, and at what rates.

HRs obviously help. The problem I have is the myth of the "impact bat" which is akin to searches for messiahs or panaceas that make massive change possible, when there is actually no mechanism for that. Adding a better hitter (whether with significant power or not) will make the offense score more runs, but it really just isn't going to make a HUGE difference which is exactly my point.

We go through stretches of less than 8 games where people whine about the offense not having enough, where upgrading the power output from a 9 HR to a 30 HR guy would not even add a full extra HR on average. And if you want to talk playoffs that's not even a full HR averaged over a 7 game series.

You're on the right track with saying 1 extra HR per 8 games is over 20 HR in a 162 game season. The next step is saying that 1 extra HR per 8 games is not life-changing and neither is 20 extra HR in a 162 game season. And the main reason is simply that 1 player in a 9 player lineup is never going to make a humongous impact.

Currently, we have the highest scoring team per game in the AL.

But we rank only 9th in HR and 8th in ISO.

How is that possible?

We rank 2nd in OBP.

And in spite of below average power numbers, we rank 5th in SLG, because BA is a component of SLG, and we lead the league in BA.

We also rank 3rd in K rate.

********

Franmil will eventually begin knocking balls out of the park, but it would be beneficial to have another 'power' bat in the lineup....but not at the cost of OBP...and not if it significantly adds to our K rate.

What we absolutely don't need is a 30% K rate and .300 OBP bat to kill off rallies.

It's hard not to be encouraged after the Blue Jays seriIes. The Jays are a very good team that has not hit their stride yet. For the G's to take 3 out of 4 is nothing to sneeze at. But let's pump the brakes on if we are contenders yet.
The good:
The "Kontact-Kids" - are still making contact. Pretty consistently.
AGiminez has been playing damn good.
The BP has been nails.
The worrisome:
The SP, other than McKenzie, has been inconsistent. Hopefully, the staff can figure them out.
It's hard for me to wrap my head around thar OMiller is our cleanup hitter, and providing lineup protection for JRam. I like Miller, just not batting 4th.
I would like to see what OGon could do.

Does anybody seriously believe that OGon could do better than Miller in the four hole?

Miller has the highest OBP on the team...higher than JRam.

Besides, Franmil will be back there soon enough.

Right now, OGon is .311 / .328 / .590 with a .918 OPS. 8 HR. Not too shabby to me.
Plus he's 6'4" 240 lbs. Looks like a middle of the order guy.
If people are complaining about lack of power, he could be the answer.

I think we need to all see OGonz honestly. He has nothing left to prove at AAA for the most part. I'd just trade/DFA Chang or trade Rosario and let OGonz come up, to see what he can actually do. If he flops, oh well, we can then trade for someone at the trade deadline...

Right now we have Straw, Kwan, and Mercado as the only true outfielders on the big league roster. Naylor is a first baseman IMO and Reyes is a DH, although they can both play RF somewhat competently, although with limited range.

I'd like to see OGon brought up and either DH with Reyes in RF or play OGon in left with Kwan in right. Mercado is still below the Mendoza line and I'm ready to see what Gonzalez can do up here.

As an organizational matter, if a guy succeeds at one level, then he should be given a chance at the next level. Even a player like OGonz, who has what appears to be some big holes that will likely be exploited by MLB pitchers.

End of the day, players are human beings. If OGonz keeps hitting the cover off the ball and never gets promoted, he's going to lose heart at some point. His teammates may wonder, "OGonz is hitting the cover off the ball and yet he's not in the Show, so why should I bother?"

Besides, as we all know, it's not like they have Mike Trout in front of him. (With all due props to Mercado for getting the game winning hit yesterday.)

Now if we didn't have Reyes, OGonz would have a spot, but we can keep Mercado as the defensive replacement while we see if OGonz can hit big league pitching. If he cannot field, but hit, he could be a nice piece in a trade as well. I hope they give him a chance soon, to see what he can do.

If OGonz is lining up in the OF it will be in RF. Kwan playing RF is not ideal long term. Out of Straw, Palacios and Kwan only Straw could handle RF well on a daily basis but removing him from CF would be pretty close to crazy.

Mercado is the closest we have to a "true" RFer on the MLB roster right now. Lots of things can happen, but as things stand now, adding a corner/RF bat around the deadline (assuming we're in the chase) seems destined to happen.

We'll see what happens. All this ruckus over not giving OGon a look while all we have is basically Mercado in his way seems silly to me, but whatever.

OBP is good for the guys that can run, but having OBP driven middle of the order hitters will get you no where in the post season if OBP is their best attribute. Funny how some so adament about OBP still support Rosario on the roster. Putting a real RFer in the lineup that has the ability to protect JRam and Franmil would go a long way toward this teams success. Maybe OGon can provide that or maybe he can't. We need to find out and there's isn't a better time to do that then now. I don't know how many times I need to state that, but I'll keep doing so as long as it's relevant. If they go get a better, more proven option then by all means this fan will be giddy. Until then there is no reason to keep giving Mercado significant amounts of playing time, and we should never have an OF of Kwan, Straw, and Palacios unless it's for defensive purposes in the bottom of the 9th.

Might as well take it a step further too. Hedges is holding this team back offensively. When the last 2 hitters are Mercado and Hedges, well that's where innings go to die. Those 2 will be gone or have their roles severely reduced, but it can't happen fast enough for me.

I have been against Oscar G getting a look but now it's why the F not? He came back for one last chance as our outfield was crap. Now, we are just missing one piece and he is going to get passed over soon. He won't re-up at year end as a free agent as he sees Breenan and Valera coming up next year. With our roster at 39 and McCarty able to get de-rostered (either due to COVID for Chang or just waived), we could be at 37 if we cut Chang. Chang provides nothing but a 1B back stop to Naylor and Miller. Oscar has slightly a better chance of being better than Chang (which isn't saying much) but why not? If all else fails, we should have Nolan back within a month to take over 1B or RF if need be (injury). Promote Brennan soon and you also have a spare OF in AAA by July. This is the last chance for Oscar (and Mercado too), give Gonzalez a thank you for coming back.

Some of these are just hangers but let him learn by facing real pitching ... what do we have to lose other than Chang?

Hard to say. It's a possibility even if unlikely. None of us know that he could anymore than you know that he couldn't.

Miller and OGon are different types of hitters and if OGon's numbers translate like Miller's did then OGon could very well be the more productive hitter. God knows this lineup could stand for a better or more potent hitter than Mercado and/or Palacios. Taking this conversation to comparing Miller and OGon is silliness. Neither has anything to do with the other.
