Gilbert buying Indians soon ?

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Although both the Kansas City Royals and Minnesota Twins were unsuccessful with attempts to launch RSNs in 2003 because they could not strike sufficient deals with carriers, the Cleveland Indians have shown that it is possible for a small market team to have its own network. The Indians started SportsTime Ohio in 2006, spurning a rights fee offer from Fox Sports Net Ohio in excess of $30 million per season. Although the Indians raked in less than $30 million in rights fees from SportsTime last year, team owner Larry Dolan and his family made a huge profit from their ownership of the RSN. Besides Indians games, STO programming includes coverage of the Browns, Ohio State, high school sports, the Mid-American Conference and golf.

how is this better than having a traditional TV deal? am i the only one that raised my eyebrows at this? correct me if im wrong, but that extra money would be going towards the team in a traditional TV deal, instead of pocketed, correct?

I would guess because they assumed they would collect advertising revenue from owning the network (if FSN was going to pay $30mil for the rights, they were obviously going to make more than that in advertising, so why not cut out the middle-man) - but then why are there ANY rights fees paid if it is all one owner?

But I know Time Warner Cable represents much of STO and sells most of the sponsorships - it is a really weird relationship.

What kind of changes do you think Gilbert would bring to the Indians?

flames shooting out of the scoreboard for intros

Funny that was my first thought. The Indians try to stay the most family-friendly and least flashy of all the Cleveland teams, but Gilbert loves the flash, so the in-game changes might be the most significant.

The advantages I see with Gilbert would be that he would be more willing to take a financial loss (though not significant) both because of his wealth and the idea that butts in the seats at the Jake equal butts in the seats at his casino.

He would buy some history off of Oakland. Apparently, we need some.

hopefully he would buy a World Series title. We could all party like it's 1948.

I wouldn't mind the Indians turning baseball into hip-hop flash. Baseball needs some updating to stay with the times. Maybe Ahmad Crump doing the intros, (It's time to get out of your seats and great your Cleeeevland IIIIIINNNNNDDDDIIIIAAAAANNNNNSSSS), some MGK beats in between pitches, during night games the lights go out and flames shoot out everywhere when Pure Rage comes into the game, after a Vinnie Pestano strikeout the Godfather trumpet plays..you know crazy shit like that to get the girls beggin for more.

Yeah, but Cleveland STILL wouldn't have the kind of baseball history that Oakland has. Oakland is so awesome. How much do you think they'd take for some history?

Ok I give up. The Indians have more history.......The Indians history is like a 100 year old man in prison. He was once the king of the town hustlin fools and was on top of the world from the 1920's to 1950's. In the 60's he got caught and thrown in jail where he was beat to shit every day for 30 years. In the 1990's, while in jail he became an O.G. and was making everyone his bitch but that didn't really get him far in the long run. He was then overthrown by someone with more money and power and has since just been a sad old man with nothing but stories to tell.

Sure is nice to hear these stories from a real fan's perspective. That's what baseball is all about. Oh, wait, I need to check with my fantasy league before making that statement. They do all of my thinking for me.

I don't even know what that means....

As an aspiring pyrotechnician, this would be the coolest thing ever. Just imagine the scene.

a winning drive/motivation to win. that trickles down from the front office, just look at the cavs. gilbert will do anything to win and to be successful, because he knows that a successful team = more fans. he understands how to be successful as a professional sports owner.
