Trade talk already hot and heavy - Chad Ford

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Well, Okafor isn't going anywhere. Why would he when he got the big contract this summer?

We're not going hunting for Gerald Wallace, yet. He's a great swingman that could fit with LBJ and Mo, but the Cavs aren't going to do much until the season gets rolling. Wait until we see how were doing and how other teams that are questionable fare.

As for AK-47, here's a good get-to-know-the-guy-better link: Here

He's a flexible defender that can clearly pick up the slack in the starting lineup when Ben isn't there. Is fairly skinny, but muscles for position in the post and does excellent perimeter defense that we've seen from AV. There's a good reason he's made the defensive teams before.

As an offensive player, he's finally accepting his status as a role player after years of frustration with Boozer, Williams, and Okur. He's probably still capable of doing more despite that, though. If he's moved to a team with less flexible frontcourt depth, he becomes a key piece to holding it together. AK may be a SF with PF-size, but he'll be right at home playing the PF on the Cavs. More chances to spot up and shoot or spin into some quick post moves. But he's not probably going to do exactly what he did back those years before (16, 8, 3, 3), but is more than capable of doing some of that again.

But I still feel that saying all of this is simply useless. Too many people like to speculate about trade talk on any sports forum and this is no exception. I understand that it can't be helped, so I won't complain about it. I'll still talk with you guys about it, but the truth is inevitable:

Nothing's going to happen at this point in time. Danny likes it and so does Mike, and after what happened over the summer, it's not going to change either. But don't worry, if there's a problem, we'll do something about it, but not until closer to January or February. And something weird could happen that wasn't expected either, since AK's contract doesn't seem very inspiring to acquire due to his contract restrictions.

Until that time, have fun speculating.

As much payroll as we would have, we should just do 2 major trades based on a Wally for AK47 package and a Big Ben for Carter deal....Jazz need cap space in 2009 and the Nets need it in 2010, great for all 3 teams.

The funny thing is these look possible to pull off.

i don't know if any of oyu have heard this story

once every year AK's wife lets him go out and have sex with another women. That has to be the best marriage ever. How many guys are that lucky

Don't most NBA players sleep with whoever they want whenever they want?

I know i'd sleep with every chick I could.

I'd guess a majority of people are NOT talking about trades right now or at the beginning of the season, but rather in January/February once we learn what positions we need to improve the most and who's available/semi-available to trade for.

And it's not like fans don't have reason to speculate - it's obvious that either PF/C or SG will likely need a significant upgrade, and we have some of the most assets for this trade deadline (all of our expirings). Plus, the speculation is all in good fun of course.

There are two other positive things for the Cavs in the trading situation this summer--

1) The team with the most assets, Portland, is looking for a PG or a SF, the two spots the cavs are not looking to upgrade right now.

2) If Portland can't find a big trade, they might put some of their front court parts on the market on the cheap, like Channing Frye, since it will be tough for them to keep all of their restricted free agents next summer if they want to have cap space.

Also, there have been a lot of pre-season trade murmurs this year, which is pretty unusual.

I understand what you're saying, Hydroponic3385. It's not that we're changing the roster since it's been known that Danny was done wheeling and dealing back in September. But I guess when some pundit starts making the conversation of trade alive when nobody is looking to move, it's hard not to get sucked in. It's freakin' bait...

But Ford's topic holds no weight currently since Odom is trying to fit in with the Lakers and both them and the Heat aren't looking to move their big expiring guys until they know they need the change. That's not been the case yet, so I guess the talk of trade is still lingering on this board. That's not a bad thing, but it probably should move to Trade Speculation where everybody can talk their heads off about AK, Miles, Wilcox, or whoever is intriguing?

This shouldn't bother me much, but I take great interest in reading the Team Talk section for my daily dose of real news or whatever is being debated. Ford's "rumor" is dead at this point and everybody can afford to wait at least 1 measly regular season game to talk about it, right?

...

You know what? It's hard to fantasize about our dream team when I don't know how well this team does against the world.

It's like we're going back to 2006 with a fresh set of faces that are even better than the ones from before. Also, Mike Brown needed to get everybody comfortable playing the expected defense and the new offense that was just used last year. There may be a slow start to this team, but then the team starts getting into high gear. Before Hughes started his injury spree with us, he and LeBron were at least really picking it up in providing victory (like the two 30 point games they had against the Sixers), with Z putting in the consistent effort every night. They won 50 in '06 when everything was new and we'll probably do it again, if not more. We could end up staying pretty close to the top this season, which would make the desire to trade still a dream but not necessary.

In reality, Danny would only pull something off if we weren't close to being a contender in February. Am I not wrong about this notion?

Or as Douglar eloquently put it below, make them better. Either way, it's only a move with positive movement without sacrifice, since we're even closer to contending while getting better.

As I understand it, Ferry's only going to make a move if he thinks it makes the team better.

Totally, the worst possible move would be to break up the #1 team at the trade deadline to gamble on a player who might cause chemistry issues.

I know Vince Carter's name has been brought up. I was watching David Aldrige on NBA TV talking about the cavs with a guest and he believed that Mo williams is a great fit and that the cavs should try and trade for Carter.

His contract does go past the 2010 season. He will be making about 17 million during the 2010/2011 season. But I believe if Lebron opts out even with VC's salary shouldn't we be able to sign another player to a max? (Bosh, Amare)

We can go over the cap to sign lebron.

I think our Salary will be at 35 million if we have VC on the roster. That would also include: Mo williams, delonte west, gibson, and JJ hickson.

No, we WILL go over the cap, if needed to re-sign LeBron. No If's, And's, or But's about it...

I am in favor of landing Carter though. Right now, we have a weakness at shooting guard, but we also have a weakness at the five and four. We are really laying on the health of both Z & Ben this season, and we have a raw, but talented big in Hickson. A 2 guard, and a power forward or center by the deadline would be the smartest thing to do with Wally's contract.

If we resign Lebron he will count for 19 mill (max money that year)...if we dont, his cap hold will be 25 million. If we have carter on the books in 2010 and sign no one else (no av, no pavs, no one) we will have 7-10 mill in cap space. Not enough for a max player. If we trade for someone past 2010, we are best just being over the cap that summer and use the mle to sign a second teir player.

*cough* Wally for Mike Miller/Brian Cardinal *cough*

This needed to happen yesterday.
