Eww. Victor is a Red Sock.

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
So what, all we ever freaking do is trade for PROSPECTS, this is garbage. I'm sick of hearing yeah more future potential. First of MARK SHAPIRO is a BUM and a horrible GM, the day he gets fired is the day I watch the indians again he manganged to take a team that almost went to the WORLD SERIES two years ago and completly F it up. WE as fans pay to watch a team everyday that can compete right? so shouldent we get to see that happen. Even when we trade for freaking prospects we cant get the really good ones. Look at the Blue Jays dont get the deal they want and not making a move. Now look at us our cheap ass owner sells away two cy youngs in two seasons. And at least i understand the Sabathia deal ok Fine but trading cliff lee for nothing not philidelphias top prospects is a FREAKING JOKE. Now shapiro shits himself again and for cost cutting reasons cant even freaking manage to pull of a good deal for the best or second best catcher in the A.L. ( joe maur). All im saying is as fans we deserve a little more. We see all the best come and go all the time. Im sick of prospect im gonna go out and film every game next year and make MAJOR LEAGUE 3 INDIANS STINK IT UP AGAIN. THANK GOD for the CAVS.

You mean the team he assembled?

I actually think that Shapiro has become underrated in this town. The trades that he's made are all for payroll reasons, not to help us win. That's Dolan's fault. Most of his deals for prospects have worked out well. He turned Eduardo Perez into Asdrubal Cabrera, Ben Broussard into Shin Soo Choo, Colon into Sizemore, Phillips, and Lee, etc. Some, like the Robbie Alomar trade, have not worked. But overall, I think he's given us reason to trust his trades for prospects.

The obvious shortcomings of Shapiro would be the inconsistency of the bullpen and the failure to find impact players in the draft.

If Shapiro were given the payroll of a team like the Red Sox or Yankees, I think he would be considered one of the best in the business. As is, I think he takes more abuse for these cost cutting moves than he deserves.

The Boston Red Sox have agreed to a deal to acquire All-Star slugger Victor Martinez from the Cleveland Indians in exchange for three players.

The Indians would receive right-hander Justin Masterson and minor league pitchers Nick Hagadone and Bryan Price in exchange for Martinez, a catcher/first baseman.

Teams had until 4 p.m. ET to complete deals without waivers.

Meanwhile, sources tell ESPN's Peter Gammons that Boston has spun off first baseman Adam LaRoche in a trade to his former team, the Atlanta Braves. LaRoche will return to Atlanta in exchange for first baseman Casey Kotchman. The Red Sox reportedly view Kotchman as a better fit in a bench role, and the Braves are looking for more offense in LaRoche. He would have filled only a very limited role had LaRoche remained in Boston after the acquisition of Martinez.

The 30-year-old Martinez will likely share catching duties in Boston with Jason Varitek and can fill in at first base and designated hitter. Martinez is hitting .284 with 15 home runs and 67 RBIs.

Martinez's deal was the second major trade in three days for the disappointing Indians, who sent Cy Young winner Cliff Lee to the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday for four prospects.

Cleveland, which began the weekend 12 games out of first in the AL Central, has slashed nearly $25 million in payroll by trading Lee, Martinez, third baseman Mark DeRosa, reliever Rafael Betancourt and first baseman Ryan Garko.

"When you don't perform or have good results, things are going to happen like this," Indians center fielder Grady Sizemore said. "It's start-from-scratch now."

The Red Sox did not give up Clay Buchholz, one of their top pitching prospects, for Martinez. But they did part with three quality arms in order to bolster their lineup.

The versatile Masterson was Boston's second-round pick in 2006. He went 3-3 with a 4.50 ERA in 31 appearances, including six starts for the Red Sox this season. The 6-foot-6 righty was a key part of the Red Sox's run to the playoffs a year ago, going 6-5 with a 3.16 ERA in 36 games after being called up from the minors.

The 23-year-old Hagadone, a 6-foot-5 lefty, has pitched sparingly since being drafted No. 55 overall by the Red Sox in 2007. He missed much of the 2008 season after having Tommy John surgery and has worked only 25 innings this year, going 0-2 with a 2.52 ERA at Class A Greenville.

Price was drafted 45th overall in 2008. The 22-year-old righty has struggled in his first two years of pro ball, going just 5-11 record with a 4.42 ERA in 31 outings.

This marked the second straight year the Red Sox made a splash at the July 31 trade deadline. Last season, they dealt away Manny Ramirez and got Jason Bay.

In 2004, the Red Sox also made a last-minute deal, trading away popular Nomar Garciaparra and acquiring Orlando Cabrera to play shortstop. Boston went on to win the World Series that year.

The Red Sox held a three-game lead in the AL East at the All-Star break, but a five-game losing streak on the ensuing road trip dropped them into second place behind the rival Yankees.

Boston has won only four of its last 12 games, has a losing record on the road and five of the starting nine are batting .250 or below.

Boston general manager Theo Epstein has already been active this month: He traded shortstop Julio Lugo to St. Louis for minor leaguer Chris Duncan, acquired LaRoche from Pittsburgh for prospects and got outfielder Brian Anderson from the Chicago White Sox for infielder Mark Kotsay.

But a bigger deal, for Toronto ace Roy Halladay, fell apart when Boston refused to part with both Buchholz and reliever Daniel Bard.

Personally, its sad to see Victor go, but he would've put up good numbers for nothing over here. At least he has a chance to go to the World Series with Boston.

This is a very, very emotional goodbye for Victor. He sat in front of his locker, with his son, Victor Jose, in his lap and sobbed after getting the news. He spoke to reporters with black sunglasses hiding his red eyes.

"This is my house," he said. "I'm leaving my house."

I understand having to trade him.... but damn this one hurts. Good luck to you Victor!

That is very sad. He really loved it here.

It is going to suck, because I really want him to win, but I just can't root for Boston.

Maybe he will come back after next season?

Damn, man. This is depressing shit.

Why, why, WHY DID YOU HAVE TO POST THIS???!! Now my allergies are flaring up (IM NOT CRYING DAMMIT, ITS THE ALLERGIES!)

I will miss Victor, he was a class guy.

I will not miss him taking up space on the roster while we rebuild, though.

Am I the only one thats happy? Oh wait Im a sox fan

Don't be a tool. Go gloat on a Red Sox board. Indians fans love Victor, we don't need spoiled, bandwagon Sox fans coming in here making shitty (although inevitable) news worse.

Just got home, heard about the trade.

Still catching up but...I didn't like the initial sound of it. Sounds like we got no elite talent back (once again) for an All Star.

So how about the money the Dolans spent after last year to get better? It's fine to blame the Dolans in one year, but praise them in another when deserved. 82M was not a cheap owner in a small market, no matter how you may spin it. They spent money last year, and what did they get in return? 17-18 games below .500 right now. Nice stuff. How can you blame the Dolans now for management who couldn't will the team to win?

I'm sorry if this offends people; WEDGE is at the top of my blame list. Period. He always has been. He always will be. This team before this week had the talent to win. For some damn reason they did not win. Why?

I'm not upset about the trades as they had to be made at this time. I am upset that great people like Victor Martinez was caught up in the BIG o'l mess. I will miss him. I hope he plays real well and gets that ring that so many players never have the chance to get. Good luck Victor.

As far as this version of the Indians? I AM concerned. I'm concerned because we still have a manager who hasn't a fucking clue. This guy is going to be making out the lineup for who knows how long, and he's got his hands ALL over our good young prospects. God help us.

How exactly did he F up the team that almost went to the World Series 2 years ago?

You do realize most of that core was still on this team last year and most of this year, right?

It's his fault Carmona completely collapsed?

It's his fault we were hit by injuries?

It's his fault our bullpen imploded?

It's his fault Garko regressed?

Yeah, I guess you're right..

WHEN WILL PEOPLE LEARN THAT THIS IS HOW BASEBALL IS?!

We sign them when they're 2-3 years into the majors for 4-5 years so we can keep them longer.. because WE KNOW WE CANNOT AFFORD THEM when they become Free Agents..

Either we lose these guys for nothing, or we trade them for prospects..

Live with it..

By the way.. why in the HELL would you think we could pull off a trade for Mauer? How the hell would you want Shapiro to do that?

Great, thread goes from talking about the trade to just bitching about Dolan and the Indians and coaching...I missed all the trade analysis
