2012 NFL Free Agency Thread

I kinda thought the Bengals would be big spenders this offseason. They're close to being legit contenders and I thought they would be looking to put themselves over the top.

I'm not complaining though.

Steinbach will be a 32 year old guy who has played A LOT of games in his career. He hasn't missed many games outside of last season so he's got a lot of wear and tear on his body. He is coming off back surgery which is not a good surgery to have if you're an everyday schmo let alone a professional athlete. Plus he was going to make 6 million next year and another 6 the year after. He would have been the 5th highest paid player on the Browns next year. Why are people so up in arms we released him? I'm glad we are talking about bringing him back but to think he's going to be the Steinbach of 2009 is just not realistic.

I'm fine if they don't use it. They have some young talented players and are looking to add more in this upcoming draft. These guys are going to want to get paid and I'd hate to find myself in the same situation the Steelers are in with Mike Wallace down the road. Not to mention when we finally get a real QB, he's going to want some money.
 
Manning to make his Decision on Monday or Tuesday

Peyton Manning has told teams that he plans to make a decision on his future Monday or Tuesday, according to league sources.

Manning, who worked out for the Broncos on Friday and did the same for the 49ers earlier in the week, has told the Titans he’ll throw for them, though the site and time of that workout is unclear (it’s scheduled for Saturday, according to one report). Teams also are being cautious about banking on a decision happening earlier in the week, because the process already has gone so long. But that is the timeframe the free-agent QB provided.

A source said earlier Friday that the parameters of the five-year, $90 million contract that Manning signed with the Colts in August are serving as the starting point for negotiations on his next NFL deal. The contract is expected to include protections for a team in regard to his repeated neck problems, and the structure could vary from the original deal.

so if Manning goes to Tennessee, Hasselback will be available. I think we should go after him and have him teach McCoy
 
Pats close to landing Brandon Lloyd. If they also grab Mike Wallace, that offense could average 70 a game next year.

And a big no thank you to Hasselback. I thought we were done with the washed up over the hill free agent QB experiment?

sorry Hasselback is way better than any of the washed Qb's we brought in before. 3500 yds 18 td's last year, pretty sure he's not done yet

What's the point in bringing him here? We're going to be bad, and the guy has maybe one or two years left in him at most. I rather stick with Colt and see if we have ANYTHING in him for one more season.

If we were going to bring a vet in, I'd only want to go all in for someone like Peyton Manning that could potentially bring playoff expectations to the city.

I really don't think he's that good, regardless anymore. He was alright at the start of the year, then he went back to his old washed up form. No thanks.
 
Bringing in a known competent Qb gives you the ability to properly assess the rest of your offense. If you have a bad and/or inexperienced Qb, you can't really tell what the other problems are, or if you even have them. The receivers and Oline get a lot of blame for McCoy's performance last season, but when Seneca came in it started to look a bit improved. Even though we lost Ben Watson, Greg Little started to play well, Peyton Hillis was back and playing decent and the Oline started to gel. Wallace's numbers weren't that good but the offense looked better. Was it late season experience, the return of Hillis, or because Wallace made an impact? There's no way of knowing because Wallace wasn't a proven commodity himself. What we did get out of it, was the potential of Little and satisfactory play from our young Olinemen.

What Hasslebeck or equivalent can tell the coaches, is whether the line is not giving him time, if he's putting the throw in the right spot but the receiver isn't there in time, if he's having to hold onto the ball because of the receivers. With McCoy or Wallace, you only know what works and what doesn't. You don't know why it doesn't. It doesn't matter if Hasslebeck is on his way out, only that he can take some reps and tell you what you've got.

They will average 70 a game and proceed to lose to the Giants in the Super Bowl.
