2012 Offseason: Quarterbacks

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Flynn knows that when he gets traded, he gets a long term deal worth much more. He will get traded and sign a nice, fat deal.

It is a risky move by GB. They could have a $10 million dollar back-up just collecting next year.

its not 10, it would be between 14.2-14.9 (at least according to articles i have read about brees possibly getting franchised)

breaking news: NFL contracts are not guaranteed. if you are a 6th round pick that has spent the last couple years making peanuts, you have played all of 2 games in the NFL, and someone offers you ~14.5 for the next season. you do it. and thats the reason the packers wont franchise him

They would probably just pull the tag if they can't get a deal.

Can't imagine a scenario where they actually pay him that money.

Packers “unlikely” to use franchise tag on Flynn

Posted by Mike Florio on January 15, 2012, 1:26 PM EST

Two weeks ago, a stellar, record-setting performance from Packers backup quarterback Matt Flynn sparked speculation that the Packers could use the franchise tag on the free-agent-to-be, in order to prevent him from hitting the open market in March.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Packers are “unlikely” to do so.

Though they have several more weeks to make a final decision, use of the tag would entail significant risk. The Packers would have to offer Flynn a one-year salary that is expected to be in the range of $14.5 million.

That’s $6.5 million more than Aaron Rodgers‘ base salary for 2012.

Also, once the contract is offered to Flynn, he’d surely sign it — making the money fully guaranteed.

Then there’s the fact that any team trading for Flynn would have to sign him to long-term deal, with $14.5 million in 2012 serving as the starting point.

In the end, the maneuver probably entails far more risk than G.M. Ted Thompson will be willing to assume. Unless, of course, a team desperate to secure “dibs” on Flynn works discreetly with the Packers to set up a sign-and-trade scenario that allows Flynn to receive a fair contract, to go to his desired destination, and to allow the Packers to get some compensation for developing the seventh-rounder into one of the hottest names on the free-agent market. Even if the Packers only get a mid-round pick, the ability to ensure that he goes to an AFC team could make the Packers more inclined to try to work something out — especially if the Raiders and new G.M. Reggie McKenzie, a long-time Packers employee, decide to make a play for Flynn.

Other teams that could be interested in Flynn include the Browns, Redskins, Dolphins, and Seahawks.

I'm happy with whatever solution doesn't involve us spending draft picks in FA.

if he was tagged, he would sign the offer within an hour. well he should.

if the packers were to tag him, flynn would accept the offer. the franchise tag is nothing more than a team coming out and saying "here is an offer for 1 year at the average salary of the top 5 of your position". if the player so chooses can go somewhere else for whatever price he wants, but the team that signs him would have to give up a couple of firsts. he would be an absolute idiot not to take the 1 year 14.5 million dollar deal. because he knows he would just go right back to packers, and sit on the bench for a year making 14.5 million.

I would imagine in cases like this there is something of a gentleman's agreement between team and player that he won't sign the tag with the promise that they'll get a deal done or pull the offer.

and you know who wants no part of that gentlemens agreement.... matt flynn. why would matt flynn want to go anywhere when a team is offering him 14.5 million dollars a year to do absolutely nothing, especially considering that he would be just as valuable the next year. matt flynn has 2 good games total in his career. 2. explain to me why he doesnt want the biggest possible paycheck now for not doing a damn thing

edit: carlos boozer agrees with you

double edit, and this entire argument ignores the fact that the packers have another player that they actually need to use the franchise tag on with finely

I would assume they'll only use this tactic if they lock up Finley, which is certainly possible.

Much like Matt Cassel, I'd imagine Green Bay's ideal scenario involves locking up Finley then pawning off a franchised Flynn for a second round pick or something along those lines.

what the fuck arent you getting about this. flynn will sign the damn franchise offer, period, the end. why wouldnt he?

Why didn't Cassel?

you mean ignoring the fact that matt cassel played an entire damn season and matt flynn only play 1 game that didnt mean anything.

Ignoring the fact Matt Flynn is probably the most coveted QB free agent on the open market (Brees won't hit the market)?

Dude is going to get a long term deal and be someone's starter, if he really going to NOT strike while the iron is hot and sit on the bench for another season losing the buzz he just gave himself after that final game?

He'd be a moron to do that, $12 million for one season of not playing or $40+ with high guaranteed money over a long-term deal?

Yep, I'd take the one year pay off too.
