2015 NFL Draft Thread - April 30 - May 2 - Chicago, IL

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Keys, so you're under the impression Mariotta is underserving of starting in the NFL?

Most grades have him graded at a level where he could potentially start as a rookie.

Should he? I have no clue but there appears to be MILES between the evaluations of Mariota and Weeden, Manziel, etc.

It's the mortgaging of the future for someone who may or may not be able to start in the next calendar year, and the people I talk to think he needs at least one year learning how to read an NFL defense. What's the next step? Start him too early because fans are impatient. What's the next step? Destroy his confidence. What's the next step? Trade him to the Cowboys...

See the cycle yet?

You're point is totally accurate, however the Browns have reached on QBs like Weeden and Manziel. Not guys who actually have a shot at being successful. Again, I'm not for mortgaging the future. I think the main difference would be in the quality of the prospect being discussed. Mariota at 2 isn't a reach. Trading all of those picks for him, is a reach.

Difference being Weeden and Manziel never should have been looked at in the first round period.

All of the steps after "draft Mariota" are irrelevant.

I'm sorry but I'm not going to pass on the opportunity to trade for/draft a franchise QB because the Browns have been bad with their mediocre QB prospects in the past. Bad bad bad logic.

This has to be hyperbole. 12 men to a side in football EDIT: IN CANADA. Meant 11. One position is clearly being overblown. What are you really saying?

You don't really need to convince me on the past, I get it.....but using Weeden or Manziel as the barometer for QB management isn't exactly a strong argument to take IMO. We reached on Weeden and Manziel was a bit of a flyer given how far he slid.

As I said, Mariota probably needs a year (in an ideal world) but the Browns are going to have a good line, a good running game, an adequate set of pass catchers and a defense that should be good enough to lean on. He'll step in to a better situation than most top 5 picks would ever dream of. That needs to be taken in to consideration IMO.

It's not perfect to potentially rush him a bit but look at our track record of drafting ANYONE in the first round. I'm of the opinion that I'd rather bottom out swinging for a QB than end up with Phil Taylor and Kamerion Wimbley. We're going absolutely nowhere as a franchise until we have a long term solution at QB in place.

So who thinks Mariota is a franchise QB? Do the Browns? I have my doubts......

I think the Titans will look to trade the pick, but I think the Eagles will end up with Mariota. Would be nice to snag Bradford and the #20.

I like Bradford, but I want no part of a guy who reportedly wouldn't re-sign here and hasn't been able to stay healthy his entire career. Just makes absolutely no sense to me.

I think the Eagles want to end up with Mariota, but if the Browns want him they have a lot more to offer. Whether or not they're willing remains to be seen. I think Farmer really likes Mariota and it's pretty helpful to have his private QB coach on your staff.

Yes, Bradford's willingness to sign here is a big question. Assuming he would....

I think the Eagles and Chip may want Mariota more, and we could potentially gain more (for instance, if we got the #20 and another player and kept our 43, assuming it meant giving up our 12/19).

I just don't know if Mariota is a guy you mortgage the future for - regardless of our past blunders.

God forbid, we actually don't draft a QB, but continue to improve the team upon us. This notion its QB or die has to stop.

Quick question, even if Mariota ends up being good, will he be the last really good QB to be drafted in the NFL or something? Is the world ending soon?

If the deal ends up being 12, 19, and a future #2 I don't really see it as mortgaging the future. You lose a first and a second to get a guy who you expect to be your franchise QB. Nobody in the league will have more insight into they guy's ability than Philly and the Browns. Kelly coached him in college and we have his private coach as our QB coach.

Just as a neutral observer, I wouldn't give up the house if I was the Browns, but I would give up 12+19 and maybe change easily. There are only like potentially 5 franchise changers in this draft and Mariota is one of them, probably the top one. I don't have to tell you guys, you need a good QB to win in this league. If you have a chance to get one, you take it.

I'd be excited for you guys actually. Mariota is like the anti-Manziel as far as character goes (and much more) and that means a lot. Keeping trying til you get one. A good QB changes everything.

What are you talking about?

All the steps you listed about prematurely starting him and destroying his confidence are irrelevant. Those steps don't have to take place.
