2017 Browns Off Season Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Nobody knows whether you are serious or kidding anymore, after that Browns Draft Analyst snafu.

We just...can't bring ourselves to trust again so quickly.

Natedagg, im sorry...and I love you.

I will earn your trust back.

And what happens if Jimmy becomes a franchise QB? You guys will be pissed you didn't trade #12 when you're loaded with picks

94 pass attempts... By all means, let's just bet the house!

I already said earlier, let Belichick keep him and see how much that contract ends up being come season's end. You can make demands all you want. You still have that decision if you don't get your #12 pick.

And if this team is below .500 (quite likely....), he may very well prefer to go play for a team that is closer to contending.

Entirely possible we trade for him, and he walks. That makes anything more than a second-rounder an overpay.

Is the franchise tag being eliminated and you're just the first to know?

It's the NFL. Players typically leave when a team is done with them for one reason or another. A 1-15 team was just able to re-sign Jamie Collins.

There are plenty of actual concerns with a potential trade, but the player walking when the team would have a year of control before even having to think about a tag isn't one of them.

Exactly! Why give up assets AND try to pay him when you can just wait a year and..pay him?

Jimmy Garoppolo blows. A little part of me will die if we trade a 2nd round pick for him.

The franchise tag for next year likely will be north of $20M. Are you so confident that he's worth that right now? Because if not, he's a one-year rental.

In essence, you have to decide if a second round pick plus whatever else we could acquire with $20M is worth more than Garrapolo. That's a tall order for a guy with 2 starts and less than 100 total career attempts.

So you don't think free agents ever factor in things like winning, or desirability of the franchise location, when making a decision? I do. Particularly when the issue is QB's who often suffer the most physically when playing for noncompetitive teams. If he gets his ass beaten here, he may indeed decide to walk.

Maybe I am in the minority here, but I say - do not trade for Jimmy G and stay the course, building [primarily] through the draft.

I do not know - I just have this feeling, based on the Senior Bowl, Hue is high on Davis Webb. I am gonna throw out a premature predicition that Webb is his top QB prospect.

With that being said, Browns go BPA defense for #1 and #12 and look to grab Webb in the second?

I am also 4 cups of coffee deep right now - so, I could be completely out of my mind.

I'm not sure I'm buying that Hue Jackson is so confident in his offensive scheme that all he needs is the right bargain basement QB like a Jason Campbell, AJ McCarron or Cody Kessler. I don't get the sense that he's targeting mid to late round guys to be the franchise QB. I don't think anyone does that. I'm sure if the right guy was there at 1 or 12, Hue wouldn't bat an eye at taking a top tier QB prospect.

Kessler has the accuracy, smarts and work ethic to be in the league for a long time, mostly as a backup QB. I don't think they fooled themselves with him and knew what he was.

Considering the Browns expected salary cap situation for next off-season I don't know why there would be an issue with overpaying to maintain control over a promising young player. The money really shouldn't matter this year or next.

And in general players leave a team when the team is done with them. Sure, there are exceptions, but for the most part teams work out a way to retain players they want.

Even if you have the cap, it does not mean you want to blow it. I would rather take a QB at 33, let him sit a year or two to get seasoned, then you would still have 2 years of a rockie contract. The last thing you want to do is tie up a bunch of money on an average QB when you are still trying to build the roster.

If Garoppolo is the guy, then it doesn't matter what they give up. And he isn't 94 passes, he had a successful college career before going pro. And frankly, if they are leaning towards say DeShaun Watson at 12, if they feel Garoppolo is a better option, then you trade 12 for him if that is what it takes.

Now my personal view is that this team has to address the o-line if they want their franchise guy in place next year. Can't have him get killed. So if they feel that is Garoppolo, well, pay the price. If he pans he was worth it.

As a guy who hasn't followed the NFL too closely for about the last decade...

With regards to Jimmy G., can somebody give me some names of backup QBs being traded (or leaving during free agency) who then went on to become really good starting QBs? All the ones who immediately come to my mind ended up being busts or below average as starters. But I'm sure I'm forgetting somebody.

The Titans second rounder and a 2nd rounder next year is more than fair compensation for James.

If it makes it a tough pill to swallow just look at it like this:

Pats receive
#52 overall pick in 2017
2nd round pick in 2018
Conditional 3rd round pick
Barkevious Mingo

Browns Receive
5th round pick in 2017
Jamie Collins
James G

We've ripped the Pats off twice in a row now. Paying a premium for a QB wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

It's far too unique of a situation to compare to past trades. This is a second round pick sitting behind the greatest QB of all time.

I can immediately think of one success story that is similar, and that is Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers was set to be a stud no matter what the Packers did with him.

Anyways, the Patriots are not a team that's going to pay outrageous money to two QB's, so this sets up a situation where they are best suited to trade one of them. This certainly won't be Tom Brady, and they then get to use that cap space to keep key positional players to set up Brady to win more rings in his final years.
