A closer look at Harrison Barnes

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Seems as though you've read a lot more on MGK than you have about Barnes.

Taking nothing away from MGK, who also excels in this capacity, Barnes is an extremely intelligent kid who is well spoken and works extremely hard.

I'm sorry, but his free throw percentage is not something that overcomes his complete lack of anything resembling a perimeter game (or at least how his projects at the next level).

While Barnes is a mediocre ball-handler (at this stage of his career), he still has the ability to bring the ball upcourt because he's a great passer (> than MGK) and extremely confident in his ability to run the offense.

At the end of the day, like I said, both of these guys will be role players because of their deficiencies in certain areas of their game. But I'm just not convinced that I value MGK's ability to slash and get to the hoop more than Barnes' ability to shoot from anywhere on the floor.

The love for one and the hate for the other is pretty astounding to me.

I would rather have the shooter Instead of the slasher and I agree they both project to be good maybe great players at the next Level. Barnes will be perfect for a team Like the Cavs with Kyrie to kick the ball out to Barnes. If MKG gets a jumper that you can count on he becomes the better pick In the long run, However I see both better than role players... Maybe Barnes Yet not MKG His celling Is at least a Productive starter. After Davis and up till Lamb It Is a pick your poison so might as well Draft the BPA. Instead of need.

Yes, because MKG and Barnes are exactly alike other than one being a shooter and the other being a slasher. Got it.

For the record, Barnes was No. 40 for North Carolina, right? Just want to make sure I've been watching the right guy these last two years.

Where did this idea that Barnes is a great or even good passer come from?

I think he was one of bottom guys in assists per 40 minutes among SF prospects

Your guess is as good as mine. I just looked at the numbers... In the tourny last year, when UNC needed him to step up as a playmaker with Marshall out, he had a grand total of 8 assists and 11 turnovers. His high assist game for the season was against Elon, where he had 5 assists. He recorded 0 or 1 assist in 27 of 38 games last year. You can't always tell a good passer simply by looking at the numbers, but in this case, the numbers just reinforced what I thought I saw when I watched him play...

Not a good playmaker. Not a good passer.

A) Anybody know anything on hand size for Harrison Barnes (at least above or below other guys his height)?

B) There is a North Carolina-Duke game from March 3 on ESPNU right now. 2nd half already, ends at 3am, catch it if you can. (also keep an eye on that channel and others leading up to the draft, there might be plenty of footage of plenty of prospects)

Thanks for the heads up. Fuck work. Sleep is overrated.

Barnes is black hole. You will never see him create for others. The guy is so one-dimensional it is amazing to me he can even be considered top 5.

I don't know...I don't think I'll ever be able to accept us taking Barnes.

Just looking at his interviews he comes off so fake and robotic...and seems like he cares about his perception too much. He talks too much about his "brand" for a 20 year old kid who hasn't done shit yet.

Weaknesses
Offensively, Marvin has only shown that he can score in one of four ways: open stand still jumpshots, lay-ups / dunks on fast breaks, put-backs and free throws. Marvin hasn’t shown he has the ability to put the ball on the floor and create his own shot consistently, whether it’s driving around a defender to get all the way to the rim or merely shooting off the dribble. If Marvin is going to be a great small forward in the NBA he will need to develop this part of his game. Also, Marvin has shown no post moves outside of trying to overpower his opponents with a drop-step toward the basket. When surrounded by defenders in the paint Marvin often gets his shot blocked because he has yet to show a jump hook, a fadeaway or an up-and-under move. In fact, Marvin’s best offensive move in the paint is trying to get to the free throw line. He will not be able to draw fouls easily against more experienced defenders. If Marvin is going to be a great power forward in the NBA he will need to develop this part of his game.

Sound familiar? Don't do it again Grant.

Isn't everyone supposed to develop their personal brand? They teach you this in college.

It's funny that you guys honestly believe this is bad.

It's also funny you guys believe he's fake because he is well-spoken. If he poorly presented himself, it would be a downfall. If he speaks professionally, he's being fake. It's a lose-lose.

...

“In high school, I was the kid from Iowa, who no one knew about and who used to work hard,” he’d told me. "Now, in college, I’m more the business guy who plays basketball.

that quote is just so LOL-worthy.

i mean, "who no one knew about?" is he really that delusional? and then to go on to say "used to work hard?"

.....really??

There is no question here that MKG, or even Beal are the better prospects. The question is will these 2 be available at #4 ?

Also I think the Cavs FO has fallen in love with the mantra of "high character guys",(TT) and where I think Barnes has used his PR savvy and intelligence to project a high character persona, which he may very well be, but means squat for his basketball talent/potential.
