C.J. Miles signs with Cavs ($2M/year, 2nd year is team option)

Re: C.J. Miles reportedly will sign with Cavs (2 years)

When someone is a poor shooter, just because they can create space, it doesn't make them a good creator.

Think about how badly we abused Jamison on this forum. Jamison looks like Mark Price as a shooter compared to Miles.

I was sort of making a joke. Miles is only "huge" if you look at the percentage improvement. I agree that overall, he's not a huge net improvement. I was basing the improvement on the percentage of assisted makes, not overall shooting percentage.

A fair warning here...you are not going to like Miles. He is a genuinely low IQ player and the on court decisions he makes boggles the mind sometimes. That said, he gives a ton of effort and is a very chatty, personable guy. Just one of those players that never seemed to learn all the fundamentals having skipped college.

How much does skipping college really have to do with a player learning the fundamentals though? I've never understood that theory. I get that a four-year college guy is going to be more polished than a one-and-doner right off the bat, but how does playing in the NBA for all those years as opposed to the NCAA diminish a players fundamentals?

Anyways, my take on Miles: his decision making can't be any more frustrating than Jamison's, and if he's taking minutes away from Casspi I can't be too upset.

I'm no coach or scout, but you don't get a lot of opportunities to work on things like ball handling, passing, and maybe court awareness in the NBA because it is just too fast. If you don't have some of these fundamentals down, NBA defenders are not going to give you a chance to try them out. I think the problem is that guys like this have never been able to work at game speed against lesser competition on some basic things. Impossible to say for sure, since we will never see the CJ Miles that went to college.

I'm throwing a number out there - 35 starts. Over or under for C.J. Miles this year?

I see what you're saying, but I don't buy it. I fully believe NBA teams work just as hard if not harder on their fundamentals than college teams do. And playing against better defenders should only increase a player's abilities. If a player can't overcome the adversity of NBA competition, than I think it's more due to a lack of will power and devotion than a lack of college.

Since you were bold enough to throw out a number, I'll be bold enough to say you hit it right on the head. 35 starts exactly... :licker:

I lean toward this argument because the NBADL does not produce quality like you think it would. Players have a chance to work on their shortcomings & still don't develop into serviceable NBA players. I think the difference is the level of talent you're playing against. It's hard to develop that extra 6" of room on a fade away jumper when NBADL or college guys can't block you without it, so you mold your game to beat the competition in front of you.

Re: C.J. Miles reportedly will sign with Cavs (2 years)

From Jason Lloyd:

The Cavaliers have officially signed free agent small forward C.J. Miles to a two-year contract, which includes a team option for the second season.

Miles, 25, averaged 9.1 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 56 games (14 starts) for the Utah Jazz last season. He has spent his entire seven-year career in Utah.

The 6-foot-6 Miles was originally a second-round pick of the Jazz in the 2005 draft. He will make $2 million per season with the Cavs.

"C.J. brings solid NBA experience to the team, yet is still just entering his prime at 25," Cavs General Manager Chris Grant said in a statement. "His ability to play multiple positions adds depth and flexibility to our roster."

Miles can play either shooting guard or small forward. The Cavs are also still negotiating with Alonzo Gee on a multi-year contract. If the two sides can't agree on a long-term deal, Gee can sign the Cavs' tender for $2.7 million and become an unrestricted free agent after the season.

I think this is a great pickup for the cavs. I liked the deal before I heard the numbers, and like it even more now. If he does not pan out, he is a great little trade chip at the end of the year for a team who needs to get under the luxery cap. If he performs well, we got a solid bench player for 2M a year. I wonder id Grant has any other value signings coming up.
