CJ Miles & The Cavs Option

Will he play defense though? I think Mike Brown would rather get a Danny Green type of wing who doesn't score much but defends rather than a guy who chucks it all the damn time.

He's not even close to being as good as Gee let along miles better. He brings nothing to the court other then his occasional hot shooting. Dude is terrible.
 
Miles didnt play defense for the first 2 months then he made some changes and his improvement was noticeable.

At this point I rate Casspi and Miles ahead of Gee.

The truth. Gee was starting because Scott knew what he was getting and when it was time to yank him he already had to many other changes to the starting line to make another change on a team that looking for another high pick.

Gee had a -6.4 differential . his counterparts shot 56% from the sf position and 53% from the guard position.

of course you can counter that saying Gee had to guard point guards and other crap assignments. You can also counter that you question 82games lgame log entries.

so we can move on over to mysynergy who has a more accurate logging system .

we see an overapp defensive ppp of .95 . we see that Spot up play he gave up a 1.09. this is relavent because it shows that gee still doesnt know how to apply pressure to impact opponents shots.

Gee isnt going to win any efficiency battles in the nba. yes the top 5 small forwards in the game are pretty gruesome to defend but what about the rest?. at least we know Casspi and CJ have a chance iagainst these guys.. all you can do with gee is assign him to a point guard and watch him at least be on the guy but still get burned up. so even Gees versatility doesnt really benefit the team .

Gee was a placeholder starter on a young team who did what scott wanted him to. he certainly wasnt the only option or even the best option. You guys can critisize Scott for rookie mistakes on the defensive end all ya want but his biggest deficiency was how he handled the Small forward position.

Gee looked okay surrounded by alot of scrubs but once that talent around him got better. Gee looked less than run of the mill

and for the stats are rubbish guys.. how come Gees defensive effectiveness didnt improve when Livingston and ellington shared the court. both were competent defenders giving better coverage than the rookie and sophomore. Gee should of stood out in these lineups.. yet he didnt. the lineups looked much better and was more effective when either Casspi or miles was out there wiith them

Are you seriously arguing Gee might not be a better defender than these two? That's is so absurd i don't know what to say. And guess what Gee does win an efficiency battle with casspi and is almost identical to Miles. While adding other things to the game. Like DEFENSE, rebounding and he is a better more willing passer. He's an offensive spud but he doesn't have the negetive impact Miles can have on a game. If he's hot he's ok but otherwise he just ruins the whole teams offense. Are you seriously talkign about fucking Casspi? Do you even have eyes? Dude might be the worst player in the nba.
 
Gee is the second coming of Jamario Moon for me. He gives you one great dunk per game, he looks like he should be a good defender, and when his jumper goes in once or twice you think "huh, maybe we're on to something with this guy." But at the end of the day you realize he's just too mistake prone on both ends of the floor, the only thing he's actually any good at is dunking, and his dunks still only count as 2 points even if it's a really good dunk. He just doesn't have a place in the rotation of a good team. Time to let 'em go.
 
Gee, Miles and Casspi all look disposable.

Gee could have a limited role of 15-20 minutes a game on a good team if he could get up to 35% shooting on the open threes. His shooting might improve if he doesn't play 30+ minutes a game guarding the opponent's best wing. Then again it might not. If he doesn't improve next season or he doesn't embrace the Mike Brown system, the third year of his contract is not guaranteed. End of story.

Miles should have a tee shirt that reads "Natural born chucker". His best possible situation is on a weak team that lacks structure and scoring. That's exactly where he was this past season. I don't see him playing much on a Mike Brown team. I think there's better than a 50-50 chance that the Cavs let him go.

Casspi looked really bad on a Byron Scott team. His playing style clashed. His personality clashed. It was a very poor fit. He needs a team structure to show his strengths and hide his many weaknesses. He's not going to be an all star, but Casspi is the kind of guy you could plug into the Spurs system and get a solid contributor. Casspi was one of the few players that seemed to generate trade interest this past year. If the Cavs decline to use their option on Miles, they could float a qualifying offer to Casspi just to see how thinks workout in a different system.

But once again, Gee, Miles and Casspi all look disposable.
 
To me, CJ can still tease with his various skills and that in itself might secure that option being picked up. Like it or not, sometimes you want and need a chucker in the game. (especially on offesively limited squads)

All of that being stated, i wouldn't be surprised if the Cavs just let him walk. I like (and have always been intrigued) by his talent level. I KNOW he's a tease but i've always been a fan of having guys who can play on our team versus a guy like Casspi. --a guy who could perhaps play better in a structured system---
 
Miles is useful at the Two, but not so much at the three. He did not play much time there, but when he did he was effective on both ends of the court. I think he was more effective when playing with Livingston and Ellington than otherwise, because between them there had to be a mismatch in the back court.

So if you draft Porter, it might make sense to keep Livingston, and play him with Porter and Cj on the second squad to start with, Starting Ellington at the three in a contract year, or starting Gee.

You hear a lot about Gee's defense, so there is probably something in it. But to me, Gee's additive is when he fully commits, he can play very intense ball for short periods. There were a few games this year where he dominated for two or three consecutive minutes, befre fadinfg away. To me this fits with the team in that there are two back court players already with that ability, and they can take turns leading depending on the matchups. ...
 
No brainer to resign him. The man was shooting near 40% from three last year. Get mike brown to teach him some defensive fundamentals, and we may have a player on our hands. Obviously not the brightest kid, but for 2 million, he's got value as a situational shooter when we need offense to get back in games. Brown talked about how he can turn a great offensive player into a good defensive player in his system, well here's another opportunity for brownie to do his thing. Cj has the tools to be a good defender, he just is a bad decision maker.

This is basically how I feel, we have a team full of young, athletic guys who can score but not defend consistently. So what happens when you bring a defensive coach into the mix? I would image the young guys continue to score, but also realize there are easier ways to get baskets if you defend. Look at what Woodson did with the Knicks in a season.
 
Miles is a career 34.3% shooter from three, just for full disclosure. The 38.4% he shot last year was the second highest of his career, coming off a year where he shot 30.7% from downtown.
 
It's not so much his shooting that I like, it's that when he's having an off shooting night he still finds ways to contribute and make the team better said no one ever.
