The Dodgers and Indians are in serious discussions about a blockbuster that would send left-hander Cliff Lee and catcher Victor Martinez to Los Angeles for first baseman James Loney, one of the Dodgers' young starting pitchers and prospects, according to major-league sources.
The deal still faces significant obstacles due to the number and nature of players involved, one of the sources said. But the Dodgers clearly are not content with their club, even though they have built a wide lead in the NL West and the best record in the National League.
If the deal occurs, the Dodgers would control Lee and Martinez not only for the rest of this season but also for all of 2010. Both players are under affordable club options for next season, increasing the Dodgers' willingness to pay a steep price.
Martinez presumably would play first base for the Dodgers, replacing Loney. Lee would replace either left-hander Clayton Kershaw or right-hander Chad Billingsley — it is not known which young starting pitcher the Dodgers would include in the package — giving manager Joe Torre the more experienced starter that he covets.
Class AA third baseman Josh Bell, Class AA outfielder Andrew Lambo, Class AAA starter Scott Elbert and Class AAA right-hander Josh Lindblom are among the prospects under discussion.
Of the group, only the left-handed Elbert has any major-league service time.
Lambo was the top-ranked prospect in the Dodgers organization prior to this year, according to Baseball America. Lindblom (No. 4), Elbert (No. 5) and Bell (No. 8) also made the publication's top 10.
Because of their recent inability to develop power pitchers, the Indians are believed to have strong interest in Lindblom, a hard-throwing reliever. He has moved quickly through the minors since being selected in the second round of last year's draft.
Lindblom spent almost all of last season as a starter at Class A. He began this season at Class AA before a promotion to the Class AAA rotation. He moved into the Albuquerque bullpen earlier this month and has been dominant there (five scoreless innings, five strikeouts).
