Dodgers, Indians "In Serious Discussions" About Lee, Martinez

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Supposedly it's for James Loney, Clayton Kershaw, and another prospect for Lee and VMart. If true, I'm as 50/50 on this as you can get

Almost as good as this one...

You didn't have a link attached in your first post.

My orginal link didn't work, so I just put that one until I could get the right one. Didn't think anyone would look in the first minute.

The Dodgers and Indians are in serious discussions about a blockbuster that would send left-hander Cliff Lee and catcher Victor Martinez to Los Angeles for first baseman James Loney, one of the Dodgers' young starting pitchers and prospects, according to major-league sources.

The deal still faces significant obstacles due to the number and nature of players involved, one of the sources said. But the Dodgers clearly are not content with their club, even though they have built a wide lead in the NL West and the best record in the National League.

If the deal occurs, the Dodgers would control Lee and Martinez not only for the rest of this season but also for all of 2010. Both players are under affordable club options for next season, increasing the Dodgers' willingness to pay a steep price.

Martinez presumably would play first base for the Dodgers, replacing Loney. Lee would replace either left-hander Clayton Kershaw or right-hander Chad Billingsley — it is not known which young starting pitcher the Dodgers would include in the package — giving manager Joe Torre the more experienced starter that he covets.

Class AA third baseman Josh Bell, Class AA outfielder Andrew Lambo, Class AAA starter Scott Elbert and Class AAA right-hander Josh Lindblom are among the prospects under discussion.

Of the group, only the left-handed Elbert has any major-league service time.

Lambo was the top-ranked prospect in the Dodgers organization prior to this year, according to Baseball America. Lindblom (No. 4), Elbert (No. 5) and Bell (No. 8) also made the publication's top 10.

Because of their recent inability to develop power pitchers, the Indians are believed to have strong interest in Lindblom, a hard-throwing reliever. He has moved quickly through the minors since being selected in the second round of last year's draft.

Lindblom spent almost all of last season as a starter at Class A. He began this season at Class AA before a promotion to the Class AAA rotation. He moved into the Albuquerque bullpen earlier this month and has been dominant there (five scoreless innings, five strikeouts).

This package would be amazing for Martinez and Lee IMO. Billingsley is already an All-Star pitcher, but Kershaw on the other hand has a chance to be a Hall-of-Famer. He's right up there with David Price, Timmy Lincecum, and Gallardo as the best young arms in the game today. I'm skeptical that this will get done, but if it does it SHOULD draw huge applause from Indians fans. I'm sure it won't, though.

I would do this trade in a heart beat if I am Shapiro and it is being offered to me.

Kershaw is a 21 year old lefty that is already a stud. (2.96 ERA this year)

Loney is only 25 and is pretty solid.

If we can get Kershaw, we have to do this.... If it is Billingsley, I would still probably do it, but wouldn't be as excited.

Agreed 100% but I would probably say no to Billingsly. I know he is a very good, young pitcher, but his throwing motion is violent he's bound to mess up his arm. Kershaw would be fantastic

Lincecum has done alright with his unconventional pitching motion.

Agreed. IMO, Billingsley is nearly on the same level as Lee as a pitcher, but has a chance to grow into more. OTOH, Kershaw is nearly on the same level as Lee as a pitcher, but is 21, under team control for years to come, and has the potential to be a Hall-of-Fame pitcher. If Kershaw is involved it is an insta-deal.

If this trade does go through, it's funny to look at the different POV's in the different front offices. Gammons reported just yesterday that the Red Sox declined to trade Buchholz straight up for Victor. OTOH, we fleeced the Dodgers last year for Casey Blake and may do so again in this trade. Teams have smartened up in the past couple of years and refused to trade their top prospects in trades like these, but the Dodgers are not on the same page. I think the Red Sox are getting it right.

Bucholz is so over rated it disgusts me. You can say we're "fleecing" the dodgers, but it's not like we're giving them peanuts. They're getting the reigning Cy Young winner and a top 3 catcher in baseball who is the face of our franchise.

The Dodgers must be worried about the Phillies getting Halladay.

James Loney, eh, he's a nice player, but he's a first basemen. Unless we plan to keep LaPorta in the outfield. Loney kind of reminds me of Ryan Garko, doesn't really hit for power, just an average hitter. But he could still develop that pop. I would love Kershaw though.

I will only accept Single A pitchers and i swear to God, if we get any proven talent, i wont watch them anymore.

/sarcasm
