Definitely a glass half full kind of guy.
Point taken. But if he could “hold his own” wouldn’t the Jazz have kept him??Preseason optimism is only problematic if the fan becomes a surly pessimist if the team doesn't meet a best-case scenario. Healthy optimism may not run rampant on internet message boards, but it's fairly common in many professional settings.
Look, Mobley was essentially the backup center last year. The Cavs should always have one of Allen or Mobley on the floor if both are healthy for defensive purposes. Niang is going to work at power forward as long as he can funnel dribble drives towards a rim protector.
But with Mobley or Allen out, the coaches want that second rim protector if possible. All we need is 15-20 minutes from Jones to give Tower City a breather. If he holds his own, it's just found money.

As cavsfever pointed out, Jones was 20-for-46 on 3's the last two years (43.5%) after attempting just 14 in his first five years in the league. It looks like he's added a 3-point shot to his game the last two years but hasn't got the chance to use it much.
In that respect he reminds me of Channing Frye, who in his first four years took a total of 70 shots from deep in 94 games. But in his fifth season he shot 392 of them, hitting 44%, and the 3-pointer was a big part of his game the rest of his career. He finished his career hitting 38.8% of his 3's. It was a classic case of a big man realizing he needed to add something to his game if he wanted to extend his career and have a bigger role. It looks like Jones is following the same path.
Mobley is also working on his 3-pointer. There's a realization that you can't block a 7-footer shooting a 3, unlike a guy like Garland who needs a lot of space to get his shot off. With bigs either the shot does in or it doesn't. Guys like Durant and Markkanen who can hit 3's consistently are weapons, especially when you factor in that they bring the opposing big man out to the perimeter and open up the paint.
I'm not saying Jones will go on to hit 38% of his 3's the rest of his career, but it's possible he has a Channing Fyre type of game, maybe as soon as this year. Frye had a 13-year career and scored nearly 8,000 points.
Great example, Jones isnt the shooter at this point Hartenstein is, but he is a much better athlete and hopefully he is coachable, but with Walton having coached him before, obviously we know that part. There are countless examples of very good role players and even starters who one team let go for any variation of reasons. We just saw Hartenstein, who was let go by two teams the Cavs being one, help to destroy our frontline in the playoffs. No reason that Damian can't be our version... well aside from if he's any good or not.
I don't know about that. Hartenstein has a lower career FT% and has only hit three more 3pt shots than Jones, with 24 more attempts.Great example, Jones isnt the shooter at this point Hartenstein is, but he is a much better athlete and hopefully he is coachable, but with Walton having coached him before, obviously we know that part.

Well, yes. But as @Pierre Pan so unfortunately pointed out up thread, it's seven teams in Jones' case.
If D Jones gives us positive minutes this year, it will be a great find by our GM.
