CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Indians designated for assignment right-hander Jose Veras after Tuesday's 10-1 loss to the Twins and recalled right-hander Jess Todd from Class AAA Columbus.

Todd came to the Indians from St. Louis as the player to be named in the Mark DeRosa deal on June 27. Chris Perez, who pitched a scoreless inning Tuesday against the Twins, was also acquired in the deal.

"They said they wanted to look at one of the young kids they got from St. Louis," said Veras, as he packed his bag. "And they said I was getting designated."

The Indians acquired Veras from the Yankees on June 24 for cash. He showed a great arm, but poor control. Veras went 1-1 with a 7.62 ERA in 12 appearances for the Tribe. He struck out eight and walked nine in 13 innings.

"If I clear waivers and they send me to Columbus, I'd go," said Veras.

Todd was 4-2 with 24 saves and a 2.20 ERA for Class AAA Memphis this year. At Columbus, he's struck out seven with one save in three scoreless appearances covering four innings.
Glad to see we are bringing up a young guy instead of having Veras waste space.

Jess Todd is lighting it up in Colmbus. Wouldnt be surprised if he was called up by the end of the year. I think that DeRosa trade might have been the best one we made.

Called it earlier today.

This is what we need to do, start getting the future guys acclimated to the major league level. I dont care if they start off rocky, its the experience that is going to matter next season.

Veras is just another version of Kyle Farnsworth- good pitches, few operating brain cells.

Why the hell do we have 8 Relievers anyway?

Why the hell do we have 8 Relievers anyway?

Because the starting pitchers can barely go 5 innings per outing.

Agree on the DeRosa trade..

I have a theory on Shapiro's trades..

We get so spoiled with what he gets for the mid-tier guys (DeRosa for Perez + Todd; Chuck Finley for Coco + Luis Garcia; Einar Diaz + Ryan Drese for Hafner + Aaron Myette ; Eduardo Perez for Asdrubal Cabrera; Ben Broussard for Choo + Shawn Nottingham) that we expect only the best prospects in the deals for guys like Lee & Victor..

Fact is, Shap's just getting a lot more than he really should for these mid-tier guys.. and it has nothing to do with the other trades of the bigger name guys..

That's what Toma Ohka is for.

Sacrifice him to the arm gods.

Good move.

I'm interested to see Todd pitch. I already had him penciled in for next year's pen. Hopefully he has a good showing the rest of the year.

Edit: Props to Veras for handling the news classy.

Ten bucks says he gets hit like a truck in the majors.

Then again, he came from another (quality) organization so I might be wrong on that.

If it only counts for his first appearance then I think you win the bet. Its his first major league appearance I think...well at least in the American league, so I wouldnt be surprised if gets beat up a bit.

I hope were both wrong.

What did I say that was wrong there?

You know he has a better chance of being good because he comes from the Cardinals and isn't a homegrown. AFAIK he doesn't have electric stuff either.
