Not going to be surprised if Shanahan leaves for a lateral move. Even when the offense was highly effective early in the season it appeared the Browns were running a more limited range of plays compared to the playbooks Shanahan employed at his earlier stops. Initially I expected the offense to gradually expand and diversify as the season went on but that didn't really happen.
Given his track record as a play caller my thought was that he felt limited by the roster in some way. He did some reputation repair by staying out of the headlines and avoiding any kind of accusations like what he faced in Washington. Career wise it might make the most sense for Shanahan to head for greener pastures if he can't land an HC job.
In the event he does leave does anyone have a list of candidates to keep an eye on?
They're all aboard the Charlie Weis train once Shanny leaves.
The Shanahan situation isn't about team personnel, aka the players, we need to clear that up right away. This is about his relationship with the non-coaching staff personnel. Calling down to the sidelines telling him which plays to run and which players should play and shit like that.
Not sure if anyone listened to LaCanfora today but here's some tidbits...... I'm embarrassed for this city. It gets worse but it's too depressing.
“It’s pretty bad,” La Canfora said. “The bottom has dropped out there. I don’t know where it is good….There’s going to be a lot of pressure on a lot of people to get better and it’s probably going to take a hell of an offseason to do that. I do not hear a lot of great things about the climate in that building right now.”
“I hear that it is not great there between the front office side and the coaching side,” La Canfora said. “We’ll see. there’s a lot of issues at quarterback, a lot of issues on the offensive side of the ball in general, a lot of issues with skill positions.
“It’s going to be a year where it’s going to be a do or die year for everybody in that building. (With) Jimmy Haslam, you last 2 years there and you’ve beat the odds.”
“You got to look at the owner,” LaCanfora said. “There’s been unrest there, obviously it was there before this owner but this is just like Washington or Oakland or any of these other situations. When this is a perpetual problem, look at the guy who signs all of the checks. It starts there. And until things get cleaned up from the top on down, you don’t win from the bottom on up, you win from the top on down. I don’t know. It’s not good.”
He also said coaches would "run screaming from Manziel" but the owner won't allow it. Thinks Manziel and Gordon should be gone to "salvage the culture of the building".
