Kendrick Perkins - Canton's Enforcer

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Mozgov plays 32 minutes at center, Tristan takes the other 16 at center.
Tristan plays another 16 at PF, LeBron plays 32 at PF
JR Smith plays 35 at SF, LeBron plays 8 at SF (Assuming minutes bump for playoffs), Marion gets 5
Shumpert plays 30 at SG, Delly plays 18
Kyrie plays 40 at PG, Delly plays 8
LeBron is not playing the majority of his minutes at PF anymore. That ship sailed after he left Miami.

Perk is the ideal player for us to get right now. Hope it happens. Worst case he plays 15 minutes in a game. I think Perk could hold his own in 15 minutes with this team..particularly if he's going up against other bench players.

When looking at ANY of Perkins stats and advanced stats for this year you have to take into account the amount of time missed by not just Westbrook and KD but that whole team.

Perkins is a glue guy. If he's the glue defensive enforcer gluing together a lineup of Russ-Thabo-KD-Serge, he makes a positive impact. When on the floor with backups and scrubs he is a awful.

But his effect on the game for 12-15 minutes a game when on the floor with LeBron, Love, Kyrie, and Shump/JR would be worthwhile.

You have to look beyond the numbers and at the context. That is one of the points that is being made in the whole analytics vs. old time scouting. Balance between the two are necessary and contextual clues are key.
Agree with you. And I'll add to that - the "scouting" I usually do is looking into local blogs and comments from fans, and you can see that there is a concensus among OKC's fans about Perkins - they really miss him and sad about his trade. This tells a lot about a player and his dedication to the team.

This cat could legitimately foul out of a game in 15 minutes. If anything, he will make the East bigs work in the paint instead of a cake walk with Mosgov on the bench. He commits 2 hard fouls on any big and they second guess themselves and subconsciously go farther and farther away from the paint.

It is strange that we are considering Perkins over Dalembert. I think it's good to have a thug on your team even if he's not a good player but Dalembert was certainly more productive particularly last year then Perk.

This is probably a really stupid question... But sending Harris down to the D-League doesn't satisfy the need for an additional roster spot, right?

I've seen him play recently...

I don't see how he gives you any more than what Haywood can.

Nope.

He's still on the Cavaliers active 15 man roster.

Have you even seen Haywood play? No? There's a reason for that.

Perkins clogs the paint and is an active body. These two aren't even comparable.

He does, look he's not that good, we get it. He's a guy that you only want playing 15-18 minutes a game, at best. But look at all the other options out there, they're not any better either.

Haywood is like a 7 foot flag pole on the floor. On his best days, one that's at least windy.

I'm not sure why you're referencing Haywood's metrics when he hasn't played meaningful NBA minutes for several years now.

The answer is so obvious that I can't figure out whether you're purposely being a douchewaffle or just really, really thick.

For now, I'll just assume you didn't think it through or mistakenly missed the point and try to help you understand as clearly as I can:

1. Everything I said about Perkins stands alone, no matter whom you compare him to, or make no comparison at all. (As seemed clear to me.) It wasn't solely a comp-based post. He's a losing player by his own statistical measurements. I don't understand how you missed that but since you did, let's repeat it here, and with emphasis.

2. You also failed to mention that I also compared him to Dalembert. Nice job cherry picking just one comp.

3. You've of course overstated your case. He was injured last year. Obviously he didn't play. Genius. This year, he's capable of playing--and has done so. Haywood has played 18 games and averaged about 5 minutes per game this season.

This is important. Because that is just about how much playing time would be available to a backup to the backup bigs IN THE PLAYOFFS.

THE issue for any acquisitions: who can give a quality 5-8 minutes in the playoffs? That is all that the backup to the backups will play.

It simply doesn't matter if Perkins has or is capable of playing more minutes, he won't get the opportunity.

4. If the Cavs already have a player on the team that does the similar things that another player does, and they would be competing for the exact same limited minutes, THEN it makes sense to wonder if it's worth brining in Perkins.

5. Understanding the kind of potential impact a player can have in relation to other players is useful. That is, in fact, what we all constantly do, you included.

And specifically comparing him to an old, broken-down, and crappy player like Haywood was entirely intentional. Apart from minutes played this season-- which is irrelevant to the Cavs playoff rotation-- that was to shock people into realizing what Perkins actually is, not what we wish him to be.

6. We will close with the key point of the post: will Perkins move the needle for the Cavs? I didn't just comp him to Haywood (or Dalembert), I gave you my guess as to the answer to that question: No.

No, Perkins would probably not move the needle for the Cavs and he might even contribute to the Cavs losing games.

How you cannot understand such a clear and obvious thing truly baffles me.

Jones or Miller go from 'sore' to 'injured reserve' and sitting on the bench in a suit instead of a jersey...
I thought you had to give 3 guys out for the year to get a roster exemption.

He's worthless. Not even going to try to fake a reason for why it'd be a good signing.

Exactly. This guy is perhaps the worst player in the league. He is a cancer to the game of basketball. I hope he stays far away from this team.
