Matthew Dellavedova

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I got some rib when I said last summer (before we got LJ) that I expected him to be out of the rotation if we were serious about building a playoff roster around Irving.

Truth of the matter is, Matthew cannot dribble the basketball in motion. For a PG that's a death knell and means he won't be in the NBA for long. As far his defense and shoot making, those are decent (thankfully for him, defense is very much effort related), but it doesn't help that he is slow, especially laterally.

He is at his best when he has another ball handler on offense and he can just spot up on offense.

The Cavs at least before the Dion trade had three ballhandlers who could take care of this. Where Delly is killing as a backup combo guard role is his inability to hit open jumper when he's spotting up. I don't know if there is a stat for this but he would be up there of most open 3's in the league. If he did that you could play him 20mpg

Delly is a back up pg who can give you hustle plays, but if you need him to run a team and defend at a good clip he can't do it he is limited.

Problem is even with Kyrie healthy, I've seen him playing the closing minutes of games. He isn't a closer on either end of the floor.

The bottom line is Delly should really only be playing 15-20 minutes a night. I think we've all established this fact. I think once Shumpert is healthy we will see him and JR (sheesh) taking some of his minutes and we will eventually begin to see Shumpert close out games instead of Delly.

No way he plays 20 mpg with the new additions. Blatt should be fired if this happens. The guy should be playing no more then 5 mpg

First off, this thread has just become a litany of overreactions. I just read a post that said if one player plays fifteen more minutes in a game, Blatt gets fired and the team gets an interim coach push through the season as a result.

I mean come on, that's just blurting out wild consequences like a drunk dad who caught his kid beating off.

Let's remember why Delly was getting more minutes. He is the backup point guard making $816,000 a year. Why is he the backup PG on a cheap salary? He was better than Jarrett Jack who made 6.3 million, Karasev who made 1.5 million, and Waiters who made 4 million and proved over the course of last season they just couldn't run the offense better. Salary had to be cut to find room for some legitimate starters, and the overpaid fat was trimmed.

Why is a backup point guard playing 40 minutes a game not at backup point guard, but instead at an off guard position? Because the team just traded for not one, but two swingmen. So we are blaming the guy who is making one sixth of his opponents' salary to play out of position because half the team was traded that night or have been injured.

Did anyone notice that OKC also got blown out last night after the trade was announced? It is a jarring thing that happens one night out of a long season.

Fucking perspective, people.

I could careless that the dude had a string of good games last year on a bad team. THIS season, when he has been on the floor for 5 mpg or 40 he hasn't been effective.

Lets stop throwing out there every excuse in the book its getting lame. He needs to do his job of playing backup pg better or we need to bring in somebody else that can do it.

Besides being shorthanded in last nights game, the fact remains that Delly, with our new additions, should not average over 10 minutes a game.

I don't bash on Delly for his poor performances or on Blatt for giving him major minutes - again: he did it for obvious reasons.
But it now would be really hard to justify if this trend continues.

Personal attacks are pretty beneath a good discussion. I will say that all bannings have been preceded by months of warnings and discussion among staff, no matter who pulls the trigger.

And if you are still dumb enough to make things personal with staff after all that yes, I enjoy banning your ass.

Are we done with the poorly placed whining? Good.

Let's get back on topic with Delly, which is what the thread is about:

I doubt we are going to see much of Dellavedova miscast anymore, if that is what bothers you. He was miscast as an off guard defensive stopper because we didn't have one. Now Shumpert should be able to handle it, and JR Smith has the length to at least be given a shot for 15 minutes a game.

But when the team doesn't have a single center, not a single rim protector, and are without LeBron's help defense... why are people surprised that a 6'4 point guard struggles defending taller and more athletic swingmen?

Everyone has their opinions, that's why it's fun to talk, agree, disagree. It's all debating. But understand this, Delly looked like a Sixer last night doing Sixer things late in the game. He got took to the hole, choked key free throws, and nobody knew what was going on in his head on the last play.

If he makes those FTs he gets praise and everything goes away. But he didn't because he's not good enough.

He has been in a slump shooting the ball. The slump started the same day as Varejao's injury against New Orleans. Since then, he has been trying to play differently defensively and offensively. It hasn't been successful. I never said the past few weeks were successful. I will point out that when the Cavaliers fix the gaping hole at center and get healthy elsewhere, I think he will be able to play a role more like the role he played last year.

So your saying if he makes 2 free throws at the end of the game vs the 4-28 sixers he is a good player?

Some of these posts just cant be real. Can't be.

This guy must have been an all-star here last season the amount of praise he has been given. Its time to forget about last season.
