Shurmur and Heckert fired (ESPN)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
He has won a superbowl.....and I've seen him sit and talk with many QBs before on TV (although, I shouldn't believe everything I see on TV). I just think his attitude and ingeniousness would get the best out of Weeden....possibly.

What if Weeden just sucks and whether or not it's offense A or offense B......Weeden needs something more?

That was a decade ago with a veteran team he didn't build.

His record with young players is atrocious, and that's the one thing he needs to excel at to be successful in Cleveland.

Agreed. Do I think he could do this? Maybe......I'm not sure if he truly wants to. I have to believe he's extremely comfortable in the position he's in now. Doubling or Tripling his salary is probably where I'd start....whether or not Haslam starts there will remain to be seen.

Exactly! Which is why if Kelly comes to Cleveland, Weeden is out.

Look, this is very obvious. Kelly isn't going to go to the NFL and not run his offense. Do you know how ridiculous that sounds? "Yeah, hey Chip. We'd love to have you. But first thing you should know: Weeden stays and you adapt to his strenghts." Are you kidding me?

I am a fan of Kelly. If the Browns bring him in, I won't complain a bit. But people need to realize that Kelly coming in would mean bigger changes on offense. Weeden confirmed that today.

It doesn't sound ridiculous at all, part of a head coaches job is adapting to the players they have available and utilizing their strengths, if we aren't getting a new QB in the draft (Which I don't really want to considering this years crop of QBs) then Kelly should be able to work with Weeden.

Weeden could work.

But so could other superior quarterbacks (who that may be...no idea).

If I'm Jimmy, I'm putting the full court press on for Gruden. I think he's exactly what this team needs and Cleveland would absolutely love him. I want a guy who has experience, has had some success, loves football and has a fire to him...that's Jon Gruden. Don't F this up, Jimmy!

For real.....he screams success and I'm sure he pisses eats and fucks it.

I think that Weeden quote from Grossi might be a little misleading. I'd like to hear all of what he said regarding Kelly and not a sentence pulled from his response to make it appear as if Weeden doesn't want Kelly to come here. Reporters do sly shit like that all the time.

I won't be in any way mad if we do land Gruden (seems unlikely with the other scenarios in play) but I don't think they guy is an absolute winner:

95–81–0 (Regular Season)
5–4 (Postseason)
100–85–0 (Overall)

It's better than anything we've had but it's not great. If we want to look at records from proven coaches I love Cowher (really, really unlikely):

149–90–1 (regular season record)
12–9 (playoff record)
161–99–1 (overall record)

Regardless - give me a competent coach with some fire that the players can feed off of and I'm good.

Gruden is another guy who's passed on this job multiple times, no reason to believe he'd accept it now.

There are plenty of reasons, however. The most important being money. Someone find me how much he makes a year at ESPN.

Also, Gruden didn't exactly have a stellar cast of players as his time as HC. It's fairly obvious to me that if we can figure out the QB position (whether that's Weeden or not) Gruden would literally be walking into a much better position.

He was born in Sandusky, OH - I didn't realize that.

While growing up in Sandusky, Gruden was a Cleveland Browns fan and raised in the Roman Catholic faith

I'm aware he went into a contract for 5 years starting in September of this year with ESPN - what exactly that contract says I am unsure of.

No thanks to Gruden. I watched him win the Super Bowl down here with the Bucs and then systematically destroy the roster.

He didn't develop a single qb, or position player, while he was here. He kept signing old retreads. By the time he left, the team was bereft of any discernible talent and had to totally revamp the talent pool.

He also ran vets out of town with no class or dignity (Derrick Brooks, John Lynch, and Warren Sapp).

I'm telling you, he would begreat the first couple of years, but eventually today's players tune guys like him out. Most Buccaneer fans down here do not have fond memories of him after the Super Bowl.

I don't endorse this guy. I wont be upset if they hire him, I just don't think he's best for our franchise.

Being able to work with Weeden and deciding to do it are two totally different things.

I'm a bit stunned so many people don't grasp this. Chip Kelly is this year's hot coaching candidate. He's going to take a bunch of factors into consideration when it comes time to pick an NFL team, including who the QB is. A marginal talent like Weeden is such a non factor in this. If Kelly wants him gone, he's gone. If Kelly wants him pounding rocks on the scout team, he's pounding rocks on the scout team.

This new regime in Cleveland has no allegiance to Weeden. The guys that did have all been fired. Rule around the league is that each new regime gets to pick its QB. And Weeden knows that. That's why Weeden stated the obvious: he can't run a Kelly offense. So if Kelly is hired, the writing is on the wall.

But sure, if you want to pretend that Kelly coming to Cleveland means him adapting to Weeden, go for it.

There is no QB on the roster that can run Kelly's offense. There are also No FA QBs that can. In that case you better hope for Geno Smith or he has to change his offense.

I think you unintentionally just made the best argument why Kelly won't end up in Cleveland. The entire reason for him to go to the NFL is to test his offense at the next level.

The spread read option won't work in the NFL you get the read from the sideline and if the pass isn't there to the primary read you run. The issue is what is open in college and the NFL are 2 different things. The terminology and zone rushing concepts that he uses are employed by the NE Patriots. The closest thing to Chip Kelly's offense in the NFL is the NE Patriots. Tom Brady isn't exactly the most mobile QB in the world. Weeden did run the Hal Mumme spread offense at Ok State which is similar to the WCO but operates out of the gun with simpler terminology. Kelly is going to have to change and cannot run the Spread Read Option. Just like Spurrier couldn't run his offense the Fun and Gun.
