I mean, I can't blame Chip Kelly for going out and getting what wins in college. I'm not sure what he'll do in the different game of the NFL, but I do know that I want a guy who will do what it takes to win. Recruiting players and running a "finesse" offense pulls in cash and has made Oregon a consistent winner.
There is no way Chip Kelly tries to duplicate his current offense in the NFL. In fact, it really isn't even doable. The entire premise of Chip Kelly's philosophy is to run as many plays as he can in short bursts of time. At the end of the day, when they look at how many plays they ran vs. the defense, they're hoping the play-count is high. They feel they have the better team and better offense, and the more plays they run within the allotted time, gives them an even better advantage at success.
Part of that success and high play count, is the fact that the clock stops after first downs in college. You just cannot do an apples to apples comparison of how Oregon's offense would translate to the NFL because the rules aren't even the same. It sounds minute, but the differences in rules are enough to force Chip into something different.
I think teh most impressive thing about Chip Kelly is the amount of respect he has garnered from NFL executives. NFL executives aren't sitting around asking if Chip's offense will translate to the NFL, they are asking what else he will find and be able to exploit using NFL athletes. The guy is that respected and good. While his system has caught on gang-busters in college, whatever deviations he makes and applies in the NFL will almost assuredly be successful. I think the biggest question for him will be who makes roster decisions, what kind of defensive coordinator will he have, and how long will his players take to learn his style. I agree that Weeden is far from the perfect match for what Kelly wants to do, but I also think he would use Weeden until they had that weapon on the team. I drool at what Kelly could do with a kid like RGIII and NFL talented players. That being said, I think he'd do just fine with guys like Colin Kapernick, Terrelle Pryor, Mike Vick.
I'd hate to see them latch their future to a guy like Vick, but someone who is mobile and has an arm would probably be most preferable.
