Shurmur and Heckert fired (ESPN)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I think you unintentionally just made the best argument why Kelly won't end up in Cleveland. The entire reason for him to go to the NFL is to test his offense at the next level.

I'm being dead serious when I say this...Kelly's offense would be banned after 1 season in the NFL. The NFL will adopt new rules under the guise of player safety. The college game is even considering it now.

It's also part of the reason that anyone who thinks Kelly will come to the NFL trying to duplicate the exact offense he runs at Oregon doesn't know what they are talking about.

Oh and no team in the NFL has the players to run the exact offense Kelly has at Oregon.

Josh Johnson could run Kelly's offense.

Nailed it...

Josh Johnson is not an NFL caliber starting QB. You would consistently have double digit losses with him as your starter.

Two things:

First, Tom Brady is running a spin-off of the Ducks offense just fine in New England..

Second, I don't get why people are stuck to the idea that Kelly is married to one exact style/system needs to watch this (start at 2:42):

Now I don't believe that 100% but for the most part, his system isn't set in stone...

And for Weeden: this new regime is completely sold on him so him not potentially being able to run a Chip Kelly offense isn't going to effect their decision...

How do you know that?

There is no QB on the roster that can run Kelly's offense. There are also No FA QBs that can. In that case you better hope for Geno Smith or he has to change his offense.

I know this sounds crazy, and I can't believe I'm actually saying this, but how about Michael Vick? He's almost certainly going to be cut or traded by the Eagles. I really don't want him in the Dawg Pound, however I feel like he's the one guy that's available that could actually run the offense with success. Then we can take a QB in round 3 or 4 to groom for the future. A couple in particular that interest me are EJ Manuel, Landry Jones, and Matt Scott. Hell, if we get Kelly, it might be worth it to throw a late round pick at Collin Klein and try to develop him as a QB. I wouldn't want to do it unless he was like the 3rd stringer, but who knows what could happen with Klein in that offense.

Also, all you'd have to do to get Kelly jacked is show him tapes of Little and Gordon blocking downfield. Those guys are big, physical WRs who like making their presence felt in the run game.

I mean, I can't blame Chip Kelly for going out and getting what wins in college. I'm not sure what he'll do in the different game of the NFL, but I do know that I want a guy who will do what it takes to win. Recruiting players and running a "finesse" offense pulls in cash and has made Oregon a consistent winner.

Is he bringing those Steelers teams with him?

I like Cowher as a coach, but he's the complete wrong fit here and for the life of me I can't figure out why after passing on this job about three times now why Gruden, Cowher or any other Super Bowl winning genius infallible coach is going to ride his horse into this abortion of a franchise.

Oh the abortion of a franchise that your beloved Tom Heckert help make.

Gruden has always been able to make the best out of average qbs

There is no way Chip Kelly tries to duplicate his current offense in the NFL. In fact, it really isn't even doable. The entire premise of Chip Kelly's philosophy is to run as many plays as he can in short bursts of time. At the end of the day, when they look at how many plays they ran vs. the defense, they're hoping the play-count is high. They feel they have the better team and better offense, and the more plays they run within the allotted time, gives them an even better advantage at success.

Part of that success and high play count, is the fact that the clock stops after first downs in college. You just cannot do an apples to apples comparison of how Oregon's offense would translate to the NFL because the rules aren't even the same. It sounds minute, but the differences in rules are enough to force Chip into something different.

I think teh most impressive thing about Chip Kelly is the amount of respect he has garnered from NFL executives. NFL executives aren't sitting around asking if Chip's offense will translate to the NFL, they are asking what else he will find and be able to exploit using NFL athletes. The guy is that respected and good. While his system has caught on gang-busters in college, whatever deviations he makes and applies in the NFL will almost assuredly be successful. I think the biggest question for him will be who makes roster decisions, what kind of defensive coordinator will he have, and how long will his players take to learn his style. I agree that Weeden is far from the perfect match for what Kelly wants to do, but I also think he would use Weeden until they had that weapon on the team. I drool at what Kelly could do with a kid like RGIII and NFL talented players. That being said, I think he'd do just fine with guys like Colin Kapernick, Terrelle Pryor, Mike Vick.

I'd hate to see them latch their future to a guy like Vick, but someone who is mobile and has an arm would probably be most preferable.

Tell that to a Bucs fan. I think there is a lot of fallacy around Gruden. I love the guy, think he knows his shit, certianly did well with Brad Johnson and Rich Gannon, but at the end of the day, he drove the Bucs into the ground while having a QB carousel and believing he could make guys like Brian Griese and Chris Sims become high caliber QB's.

I think there is a fine line between great coaching and stubborness. Gruden has always struck me as having a bit of Steve Spurrier in him. They believe their system can and will work, even with limited talent, as long as the players execute well. And I think that line of thinking causes teams to fall into huge traps where they're always focusing on perfecting the system vs. finding better talent. I mean, Gruden really did a number on that roster in Tampa after winning a Super Bowl with Tony Dungy's roster.
