The Brian Hoyer thread...

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Those playoff games outline exactly why Andy Dalton isn't that good. He's honestly been that team's biggest weakness for a while now.

I would agree with that, but I think most of us would kill for a couple of playoff appearances at this point. :chuckle:

No doubt, but if they got there and were held back by some soulless ginger who throws 1 TD and 6 INT in three games I'd be looking to kick him in the dick.

Well, we were held back by a similar soulless ginger and we won like four games, so I'd take that.

You mean make the playoffs several years running? Yeah, that would be fucking terrible.

And I wasn't saying that I liked Dalton or wanted him as our QB, but let's not pretend that he isn't miles better than any QB we've had since the franchise came back to Cleveland.

Andy Dalton is the reason they've not taken the next step. The Bengals are very good, very talented on both sides of the ball. Way more talented than us.

So no, I would not want Dalton, a guy that clearly holds a team back from taking the next step.

He's not terrible, but he's not that good either.

I would hate to be in a situation where we're just stuck with a guy like that as our QB.

Fans would still be lighting their head on fire if we were in their position.

Sure, making the playoffs is better than where we're at. That's not even my point, the Bengals are stuck where they're at.

I would hate to be stuck as a franchise. We're in position to get better, whether we do it has yet to be seen.

How long have you been a Browns fan? Do you seriously think he's been better than Sipe and Kosar? Better than any QB we've had in the last 40 years, are you kidding me?

Jack said "since the return". Sipe and Bernie obviously were before that.

ETA: Er....scratch that. He's said "before the return" but also "in the last 40 years", so I'm not really sure what he's saying at this point.

I saw he was just being sarcastic, and edited the post. The icons are loading slow for me on my computer.

He said 40 years though. But yeah, Dalton has been better than the QB's we've had recently. But I don't think he's been that much better than some of them.

If he was on the Browns, I'm not sure he'd still be here.

The advertisements are killing my speed as well.

As you point out, we wouldn't consider drafting an Andy Dalton a "success", nor would we trade for him. So regardless of whether or not he's a bit better than what we've had, he doesn't really have a place in the conversation as to what we should do moving forward.

Forty years was obviously sarcasm, but he's certainly miles better than anyone we've had since the return.

I wouldn't want him at what the Bengals are paying him, obviously, but on a rookie deal I'd take him in a heartbeat over what we have now.

Can we not contaminate this thread with the bad that is Andy Dalton? At least we're not paying Hoyer $115/6. Awful.

We could have chosen a better referent other than Andy Dalton/the Bengals...

That's my exact point why I rather be in our position. The minute you marry yourself to guys like Dalton/Cutler, you're stuck in mud.

We're not. I rather be a Browns fan than a Bengals one. I think we have more hope going forward. I don't care how down some are, we're in great position going forward.

Young, talented, draft picks. And the QB's we have, we're not married to them. No ridiculous contracts thrown at them. So if one, or two don't work, we can move on.

That's why I found it absolutely silly, to seriously be thinking about giving Hoyer any contract extension, at this point.

Cutler's contract is only guaranteed through 2018, the next 4 years after that are year to year team options. I'd hardly call that saddled.

ONLY? Cutler has been hot garbage this year. Dude has all the talent in the world, but can't seem to put it together. 8 picks, 9 fumbles (4 lost), 20 sacks. He puts up good fantasy numbers, but I would puke if my team was tied to him for 4 years at the money he is making. Outside of Denver, he has the best group of weapons in the league to work with too (IMO). Marshall, Jeffery, Forte, Bennett - all studs.

I think saddled nails it, frankly...

Cutler has been the same guy for years. He's a big-armed QB who is prone to mistakes. Like, he's what Derek Anderson and Brandon Weeden were supposed to be. Which, honestly, isn't saying much. He puts up big numbers, but he's always had accuracy issues and makes a ton of mistakes.

I like having Hoyer more and not just for contract reasons. Hoyer, while having accuracy issues of his own, doesn't have the same issue with turning the ball over. He's far from perfect, but he's done relatively well when you look at the overall picture through seven games. Assuming he still has the job when Gordon returns, it should be interesting to see what happens to his performance under center later in the season. I think Gordon will elevate his game and help hide some of the offense's weaknesses, much like he would do at times last season.

When Gordon returns, defenses will no longer be able to stack 8 or 9 in the box. The running game should open back up because of it and the offense should be able to move at a much more consistent pace. The Browns just have to weather the storm in the meantime.
