The incredibly awesome Mike Bibby thread !!!

Re: BW: Cavs almost got Bibby today

Okay here's a trade that works and other's could be added in if needed....

Sac Sends out Bibby to Cleveland
Cleveland sends Drew, Damon, and Wesley to Sac
Cleveland sends Hughes to Utah
Utah sends us Ak-47

The trade works moneywise, I don't know if picks, cash, or other players would be needed to make it work. But if Utah wants to pay MO pete 5 million and add to the payroll, it's ridding itself of AK and theoretically it's like paying Hughes only 7 million per since they won't just be adding 5 mill in salary.

Re: BW: Cavs almost got Bibby today

If Gooden is gone without AV signing, then the situation doesn't change. Darko stole any chance AV had to get big money by taking Memphis' cap space. Milwaukee might be tempted, but it'll be moreso a sign-and-trade rather than an outright signing, because do they really want to add another big when they have Big Boy Danny Gadz on the books for a few more years and a sizeable dollar amount. If they want to trade Yi to us, that would be fine by me...

So, what AV could do is nab the qualifying offer as his best solution to test the market next year after starting, but that never ends up well. We'll probably see a situation like last year, a mid-range deal ending when he's going into his prime, and I'd be perfectly happy with that. 3 years, 20 million.

Go get Bibby, do whatever it takes to trade Gooden.

I like the trade idea but I'm having a hard time figuring out why in the world Utah would want to do this. Unless they are desperate to get out from under a big contract one year sooner?

It works on the TradeChecker: http://www.realgm.com/src_checktrade.php?tradeid=4100528

Re: BW: Cavs almost got Bibby today

I thought I had read where Utah wants to keep AK47.

Nonetheless, he has a "hook up with anyone" card from his wife.....so he can take down some local Cleveland talent......if he can.

Re: BW: Cavs almost got Bibby today

Just an update for those that are interested in my idea in bring in Mutombo..

The trade that sent Butler to Houston was essentially a move made because they don't have enough room to bring back Dikembe and they needed a backup center. They want him back, but as of now, the most they can offer is the vet min.

So, if we are going to show interest (I have asked a couple people in the know, Ill let you know when I found out), we might be able to compete for his services.

Re: BW: Cavs almost got Bibby today

Mount mutumbo would be great. Although his razer sharp elbows have been known to hit teamates as well as the opposition!

Yep, I'd be all for Dikembe taking over Pollard's role on the team... as long as he stays at least 10 feet away from LBJ at all times during practice.

The Cookie Monster-esque interviews alone would be worth the contract.

Hughes is a pretty decent defender, everyone knows that. Hughes is overpaid also, but not near as overpaid as AK. The Jazz have Boozer and Okur. Boozer is offensively alot better than AK. AK is not a SF. He's a PF.

THey get out 1 year sooner, fill a need at SG, and save what??? 20 million or so??? I think if a first round pick was added by the Cavs it could surely happen. I think it could happen without the pick though.

Re: BW: Cavs almost got Bibby today

I'm a huge Bibby fan, so I'm doing f**** cartwheels over here. :headbang:

A few mentioned his decline the previous year - that was actually a career year for him: 21/5.5 on 43% shooting and 39% from 3. It's true his shooting % has dipped a little over the years, but imagine him with all the open looks he'll get b/c of Lebron, and what that means for the coverage of Lebron. Opp teams won't be able to defend him and leave the weak side perimeter wide open.

The Gooden/Jones trade-off seems perfect for us. I wonder if we offered expirings, too? Gooden + Jones is still about 2-3 mill shy.

The iSHT, did you mean to involve Utah as the 3rd team?

It's true that from Fegan's point of view, this deal happening before Andy signs would be leverage. He'll say, "You have no PF now, my guy can take that spot, so pay him like it." On the other hand, if Ferry & Brown & Co. really don't think AV can handle starting duties (and I have my doubts unless I see Hughes suddenly figuring his s**t out), their stance can be that it doesn't change a thing. Andy hasn't proved he's a starter and he's not going to get paid like it. If Fegan wants to play with Andy's future and risk him getting hurt for a $1.5 payroll only to send him into the biggest free agency summer next year (when NO ONE will have money), then let him.

:chuckles: :chuckles: :chuckles:

I wouldn't mind Mutumbo, but I wouldn't mind Dale Davis, either.

Re: BW: Cavs almost got Bibby today

The Bibby talks are up once again. Hopefully this time half the board and about 100 guests won't stay up till 3 in the morning waiting for news.....

We resign Bibby to add offense, energy, and a PG who can run the offense, keep Gibson as LBJ's running mate, and keep Wild Thing as our X factor, I'll be a happy man.

I think AV proved he can play big time minutes, and if Donyell can reach deep into his soul and find his shooting touch again, we're in great shape at the PF position for adding Bibby.

Re: BW: Cavs almost got Bibby today

http://www.ohiomm.com/blogs/cavs/2007/07/13/new-takes-on-bibby-varejao/

New takes on Bibby, Varejao
Las Vegas — So the Cavs and Kings are at it again with Mike Bibby. As one of the three writers who was swarming all over UNLV to break this story yesterday, I still am not quite sure why this deal broke down. It certainly looked like it was going to happen when both Damon Jones and Drew Gooden were in the gym with the Kings owners Joe and Gavin Maloof and their entire front office. Let me also pass this along, Danny Ferry really wanted the rights to Luis Scola from the Spurs. I mean really, really, really wanted him. It would also make sense for the Spurs not to hand players to a division rival for nothing but money. Yet, no dice.

The only thing I can think is the Kings just still aren’t happy with the package being offered. The Cavs can offer Gooden and expiring contracts (Ira Newble, David Wesley) or they can offer Gooden and a shooter (Jones) or a combination of both. They are still trying to get a third team involved, just as they were for hours and hours back in February, to sweeten the package. With all this talk, my gut tells me this probably gets done at some point in the future. They aren’t going to give up now.

On the Anderson Varejao front, one league executive told me yesterday: “This is going to be one to watch.” He meant for entertainment value, in a sick, detatched way. Andy’s agent, Dan Fegan, is looking for the big score. I’m talking about something like $9-$10 million a year. I believe the Cavs are offering something much closer to $6 million a year. You don’t have to be a math major to know that is a wide gap. The Cavs will not pay it and, because Varejao is restricted and no teams who want Varejao have cap space left, they will not have to pay it. They do not have to do a sign-and-trade for it if they don’t feel like it, either. Here’s the thing, though, Fegan does not like to compromise. He may rather have Andy play out a one-year qualifying offer and become unrestricted next summer.

Now, this doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me. First off, because’s a second round pick, his qualifying offer is only $1.3 million. Sasha Pavlovic’s, for example, is around $4 million. That means Andy potentially would be leaving $5 million on the table just this season alone. This is a guy who has made just $2.6 million over the last three years combined. He may never make up that money. Second, next summer the free agent market is deeper and there are no teams that will have a bunch of money. So if he leaves the Cavs, it very likely would be just for the mid-level exception, which will be around $5.5 million next year. Does that make sense? No, but it does make a point, which is what Fegan might want to do.

Here’s something you need to keep in mind that no one is talking about. Andy really, really wants to play for Brazil in next month’s FIBA Americas Tournament. He loves playing for the national team and the Brazilians are fighting for one of the two spots in the Olympics next year. With the Americans and Argentines there, they need their best players. Andy can’t risk playing without a contract, remember he blew out his shoulder playing for the national team two years ago. I have not spoken to Andy since the season ended, so maybe his feelings have changed. But he’s always expressed to me how he wants to make the basketball team as popular as a the national soccer team, when the whole country shuts down to watch. That is probably unrealistic, but Andy always sounded passionate about it. Anyway, that means the contract has to get done in the next few weeks if he wants to play. We’ll see…

Just some more information from Windhorst.

A Mac aka The Truth said:
I would love to have him here but as MYoung said, he is in his thirties and he has been on a decline the last two years.

I absolutely hate it when people play this card with Bibby, I hate it..

Bibby JUST turned 29 in May, the guy isn't in his thirties... If you're going to say that he's in decline, then you could say the same thing about Kobe, McGrady, Dirk, Brand, Rip Hamilton, etc., etc.,... They are all in the same age range... So if you consider Bibby on the decline, you'd have to throw all of those players in there too...

And people don't seem to realize that Bibby got:

4 minutes less per last year
Almost 3 shots less per game last year

Sure that's not much but consider these numbers:

Kevin Martin got 6 more field attempts per game
Martin got 2 more 3PT attempts per game

I think a lot of people overlook the fact that last year was Kevin Martin's breakout year last year and that instead of years past where Bibby was the Kings #1 option, last year Bibby had to become more of a distributor and a 'true' PG while they made Martin their #1 option/go-to-guy...

The fact is that making Bibby play that kind of role is part of the reason why his stats went down as well as most of his shot attempts went to Martin...

I'm not saying that he can't co-exist with other high-volume players, but he was put in a role with the Kings that he hadn't played before and a position that he wasn't comfortable with...

A Mac aka The Truth said:
His shot hasnt been that great, but again, that may be because of the pressure of him to do more on the offensive end because of the lack of talent.

He shot 41% from the field last year, 36% from 3 and 83% from the line.. His career numbers are 44% from the field, 37% from 3 and 81% from the free throw line...

I beg to differ..

Not to mention he had a 53.2 TS% last year and an eFG% of 47% on jumpers...

Yes he did have a down year in shooting last year but I already explained why I thought that and even if this is all we will be getting, he's better than anyone we have on our team...

A Mac aka The Truth said:
What would be out there for us as far as free agents go for big men?

Andray Blatche has been discussed, there are some vets out there like Dale Davis, Dikembe Mutombo, Chris Mihm, Magloire, Melvin Ely..

Don't forget:

Mikki Moore
Joe Smith
PJ Brown
Mike Sweetney
Austin Croshere
Brian Skinner
Calvin Booth
Michael Ruffin
Marc Jackson

To a lesser extent:

Kelvin Cato
Malik Allen
Jake Voshkul
Danny Fortson
Esteban Batista
Michael Olowokandi

The thing people to forget about Bibby:

We flat out don't have a clear-cut, head-above-shoulders # option and I think we can all agree on that... Acquiring Bibby gives us that guy who can take over for LeBron... He can give LeBron longer rest periods... He can take over for us if LeBron, God forbid, he gets hurt... He can take over for stretches when we need offense... He can take over when teams focus on LeBron...

And that's the thing that kept us from winning the Finals... When LeBron couldn't score or create for others, we had a hard time doing much of anything...

Just look at the Spurs, they had three main guys who you could run offense off of: Duncan, Ginobli, Parker... All 3 of those guys who score at any given moment and carry the team when need... We only had LeBron...

Getting Bibby would give us that other option next to LeBron to help LeBron out when needed and add another option next to LeBron that can score and most importantly, shoot the ball...

And not only would getting Bibby help LeBron, I really think it would help Hughes... Because we'd be getting a guy who can shoot the ball and flat out score... And I think Hughes would be quite effective since Hughes did have his best years next to a PG similar to Bibby, in Gilbert Arenas in Washington...

And even if the guy happens to be declining, which he isn't, we would only have two more years with him so it's not like we are locked up long term with him... And if we would get him, we'd be looking at around 40 million to spend in the 2008/2009 offseason... 40 freaking million... We could re-up Bibby, get a max player and still have around 13 mil to spend on free agents... Just think about it...

All in all for the price of Gooden, expirings and a veteran, this needs to get done... This move makes sense and it'd be tough for me to swallow if Bibby wasn't in Cleveland by off-season's end...

I've been saying this for a long time..............Hughes for AK makes sense for both teams. Both are fragile and overpaid. AK-47 and AV could be our starting tandem in about a year or two with Andy playing center.

Jazz want a SHOOTING GUARD, not Hughes... It's been run by here to death and I have to believe that the Jazz don't want anything to do with him...

Windhorst just made my day:

With all this talk, my gut tells me this probably gets done at some point in the future. They aren’t going to give up now.

:)

I really, really, really hope it gets done... I'll try to fish up a three team deal with the Cavs getting a PF and the Kings getting what they want...
