The Jonas V thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Damn the East is bad. Didn't realize Toronto was leading their division with a 6-9 record

toronto is very guard based. Jonas doesn't see the ball because of that. He does appear out of place. It would be like having drummond and not having a passing point guard.

DD and Gay took combied less than 50 shots so the last game was an improovment

Jonas had 6 points on 3/4 shooting in the first 5 minutes of the game. He had just 3 shot attempts in the rest of the game and finished with 8 points. I have no idea what Dwayne Casey is doing up there.

tanking for Wiggins

I feel bad for Casey. What is he supposed to do? The only way to get a functioning offense would be to bench Gay and DeRozan, and that's hard to do to your two highest paid players.

New member here. I'm a Lithuanian and I'd say I'm more of an NBA fan than any specific team. I like ex-Lithuanian teams like the Cavs, Blazers, Warriors, Denver, as well as some other well run organisations.

I think Jonas will be a really solid piece. However, I don't understand the bashing Cavs get for picking Tristan over Jonas. TT will also be really good, IMO. He might have (theoretically) been a little bit of a reach at the 4th spot looking in the vacuum, but Jonas' buyout situation made Tristan's pick legit. That's my opinion at least.

Now more on Jonas. I've been watching almost every game of the Raptors (which is kind of excruciating knowing what type of basketball they're playing at the moment), and Jonas has all the tools to become good. His main problems seem to be over-comitting himself on help-defense and not being assertive enough on the offensive end. Combine that with low usage and getting leftover touches from Gay/DeMar and you have yourself an underwhelming performance so far. He also seems to be doing too much of the pump-faking without even setting it up with a midrange shot early in the game. On post-up opportunities, he doesn't get a good position for himself and catches the ball not far from the 3pt land. That's too much distance to the basket and it's hard for him to cover it without a polished face-up and post-game (ala Randolph who can catch the ball in that position and still be effective).

However, he has shown some improvement as well. He now seems very comfortable shooting running/baby hooks with his left hand and seems to have developed a spin move to his left side to execute that lefty hook. Which is really nice.

I think he has the potential to be Vucevic type player, with perhaps slightly worse rebounding, but better shooting touch (free-throw shooting, midrange jumpers and finishing around the rim) and better shot-blocking.

Glad to have another international fan of a former Lithuanian clad team. I loved Z in the old days and appreciated how hard he worked to get back to form. I really do wish he was able to play in the 2008 Olympics, for his country among others. Maybe then we might've had a clear path to take Valanciunas.

I haven't been able to see him play as much this year, but from what the stats say and from your observation, he is almost equivalent to Thompson in terms of per-36 minute production. Now there's a year apart, but Jonas can establish position against anybody in the league which is a power game rather than the energy game we see out of Thompson here.

I'd say more but I don't have anything at the moment. The only thing I do believe is that I don't think either have reached their full ceiling, not anywhere close. It's a comparison battle I look forward to. It's just too bad Tristan isn't 2-3 inches taller so they could matchup.

Thanks for a warm welcome.

I actually think I would much rather have Jonas develop on a team like the Cavs as well. At the time of the draft, I thought Raptors might be the perfect team for him because of how crappy it is and there not being any competition for him at the 5 spot. However, I quickly became very critical of Toronto's coaching staff (both the overall teamplay system and individual coaching). I thought Jonas would get his 30-35 mpg and will develop rather quickly. Instead, they're still keeping him at 27 mpg, not to mention there not being a high quality big man coach. Man oh man, I think Big Z could do wonders for Jonas' game.

Anyway, enough of the rant. I hope I'll be a useful member of this community!

That has actually been one of his big weaknesses this year. Stronger defenders can push him out far enough for when he does get the ball back to the bakset, it's too far away from the basket.

This. I absolutely agree. It's not that I think he couldn't get that position, I think he's just being too much of a nice guy and that lack of assertiveness (perhaps even a fear of some quick fouls) is holding him back from taking that good post position.

Last night Jonas had 11 points, 10 rebounds and 3 assists in 29 minutes of playing time.

On a sidenote, I like that our best Lithuanian centers always play with emotion. Last night was a perfect example - JV got a hard bucket, but was mad he didn't get an AND1, and from the looks of it, tried to knock Miles Plumlee out.

Like the Ilgauskas vs Charlie V confontation, or the one with Ostertag.

Or...

If that would have connected, probably would have taken Plumlees head off.

Shit
