The Official True Detective Scene

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Who was the dead guy they found near the end? Maybe I'm not paying close enough attention, but all the subplots surrounding Vaughn's character seem unclear and more difficult than necessary to follow.

All of these episodes have been so damn confusing. All I can figure out so far, which who knows I may just be misinterpreting:

- three groups are trying to 'solve' the murder:

1) Vaughn's underground group, for lack of a better term. He wants to solve it for money and that's about it.

2) Vinci police. There's obviously something fishy going on, also related to money and covering it up. Farrell doesn't seem to be that interested in following the boss's wishes to cover things up

3) state police: they also seem to think Vinci police are up to no good.

I guess you could throw the motorcycle cop in as a 4th group. Like others, I can't figure out what his role in. Only thing I can think of is he somehow discovers what Vaughn is really up to, since he's already infiltrated the club/underground scene

No, they were not the same guy. I don;t know who the dead guy was, but he wasn't the construction guy.

I think it was just one of Vince Vaughn's muscle guys. I'm pretty sure he was in the room in episode one when Vince is having that discussion with the Russian.

The opening of last night's with Conway Twitty's - The Rose was fucking awesome. So Twin Peaks-esque. David Lynch would have been impressed.

I thought last night's episode was by far the best thus far.

They need to turn this ship around because it is coming up on the half way point and not a lot of shits are given about Casper and that random henchman guy.

Too many characters that I don't care about to go along with their boring subplots.

Episode 4 was the best episode of last season and really kicked it up a notch.

I agree. I thought the "cliffhanger" from episode 2 was cheaply spun into nothing in episode 3.

Really lacking in almost all areas this year, IMO.

Could you imagine if they killed Farrell's character off? He's been the one bright spot this season. The other three characters and subplots have been well below par.

I'd be for it if the Crow mask was taken off to reveal Rust Cohle who then turns to the camera and says, "Alright, alright, alright."

Farrell is killing it but the character itself is pretty cookie cutter. Detective that drinks too much and hates life? Sounds like every detective ever. Kudos to him for making the best of it.

The gay bike cop is a more unique character, but he's really, really boring.

That's the thing, I don't mind shows starting off slow. TD started off slow last year, but it was still so damn compelling that it kept you wanting more.

A show has to flow with some continuity, and I feel its been one clusterfuck of that. It's just all over that place, without any real rhythm.

The stories are so over the place, the characters lack enough charisma to keep you interested.

Farrell's character is starting to become a tad more compelling, but nothing close to McConaughey's.

And it's not that McConaughey is just a far superior actor, Farrell's acting has been fine, you just can go only do so much with the material you're given.

I thought the scenes with him and Fred Ward, that turned out to be his father, were pretty awesome, and interesting to say the least. Fred Ward is just an awesome actor period, really hoping there's more there with him.

I think Vaughn has done a fine job, but his character is pretty one-dimensional as it gets, and the interest level pretty much stops there fast. He has the swag-hip-shrewd-bad-ass gangster nailed well. Vaughn seems to be enjoying himself in this role, but it's not exactly the most original role in the world either.

I agree that the acting altogether isn't really bad, it's just the characters themselves aren't really that fucking interesting, personally.

I never thought they'd top off McConaughey and Woody, and it's true, those two are outstanding actors, but their characters were just better written too.

I still don't give a flying fuck, at all, about Viagra and McAdams character at all.

She's as cliche as it gets. Female cop with serious daddy issues, turn hardcore badass-take-no-shit female.

Eh, her role feels a bit forced, and a tad cheesy. She was just a horrendous miscast. She doesn't pull it off at all.

Viagra, is just a limp-dick, with some serious twisted sexuality issues going on.

Did anyone get the vibe, his mom might have molested him as a child? The previous episode, and the way she was talking to him was fucking bizarre and creepy.

I agree, but at this point something really exciting and tension filled needs to happen because the characters aren't carrying it.

I think they're taking too long to dive into some of this stuff.

I found Farrell's character a lot more interesting though. I see a potential character arc developing with him as the season develops.

But the rest of the show is still scrambled eggs, and I don't see any great recipe for it.

Maybe Nic Pizzolatto bit off more than he can chew.

He literally writes every episode himself, and to continue that in a year period just seems like a daunting task.

Season one seems he had a clear vision and idea of the characters and the overall plot in general built up for quite some time.

Some of the elements of the show has a lot of promise, and a small spark of what we saw last year, and other parts are just not all there.
