Think the other thing hurting the show a bit is that Nic Pizzolatto is the only writer.
Pizzolatto was born in Louisiana, went to LSU, Arkansas for school. And you can tell during Season 1 that the person who wrote the script/story had inner knowledge of that setting.
But Pizzolatto seems a bit out of his element here(understandably so) and probably could have used more help writing this script.
HBO probably asks he hire more writers or maybe goes back to what he knows better. Eerie, creepy, Louisiana swamp type stuff.
Fargo on FX is a show that was really popular and powerful partly due to the setting and great acting from Billy Bob Thornton. And although that show will be in a different period with a new cast, it will maintain its iconic snowy, icy setting which will help a ton.
Think Pizzolatto should have kept rolling with the Season 1 or similar setting.
