Truth And Rumors (trade deadline talk)

Re: Truth And Rumors 2/18

AMC brought up the possibility of a S&T for Speights after the season. It would give the Cavs more opportunity to evaluate him, though it might upset Tank (and other tankers) during this season.

Of course the Cavs wouldn't have control over whether he would be amenable to a S&T, but it would give Speights a lot more choice over where to land in terms of a decent payday.

I want to say we don't have Bird Rights for Speights. So if we did do a S&T, ti would have to be with cap space.

Re: Truth And Rumors 2/18

Since the assumption is that talent wise, we will not have a top 5 pick in the 2014 draft(which the Cavs obviously believe is either super deep or has 1-2 transcendent players in it) what strategy do they have to getting what they want out of 2014 draft? If the talent is really considered so good in the top few picks, could a package of our own 2014 picks coupled with multiple other picks(heat 2015, sac, memphis) really net us either an unprotected pick prior to the 2014 lottery or a top 1-3 pick once the lottery is set?

Considering how unpredictable things are in terms of hoping other teams to do well or to do poorly, I doubt that the Cavs would bundle together picks to move up in the 2014 draft until much closer to that draft. It's hard to count on other teams to finish where we want them (as we know), and the last thing the Cavs would want to do is to trade their own pick and end up regretting it.

I think it's more likely that they make a trade that involves a conditional swap (no risk for the Cavs) or they land another pick in that draft by taking on a bad contract. If the Cavs get very lucky, the Kings will better next year and they'll grab that pick earlier than expected. At that point, figure out how to combine them to move up.

I really worry that Speights is just turning it up a notch in advance of his impending free agency. If we could net a pick, even a non-lottery pick from a contender, for him now, I'd do it in a minute.

Didnt consider the S&T route before AMC brought it up. I would want/need something as close to a wink wink from him that he would be amenable to that before I passed on any opportunity to get a asset for him this week.

Personally, I dont like his game/lack of hustle on D/horrible awareness of defensive rotations.

When a big is bad at defensive awareness/spacing and hustle on D, it really compromises our guards. That can hurt Dion and Kyries development. JJ Hickson and Drew Gooden are recent examples of bigs who made guards look worse as a result of not being aware in defensive systems. Anytime he wants to put effort in, he is in place for charges.

Just undermines what I am starting to see take shape in great defensive rotations from bigs like Tristan, Tyler (never contests, always looking for charges but at least he is there) and Luke when he is playing the 4.

If he stays for the rest of the year, he is going to want to keep playing this allotment of minutes so he can earn his next contract.

Re: Truth And Rumors 2/18

Besides Parker, Wiggins and the PF from Texas (Julius Randle), is there really any body else who is "a can't miss prospect from 14?" I dont see anyone trading away a top 3 pick in 2014. A lot of flaws that are not evident in HS get exposed in college. I am not sure the draft in 2014 is as deep with all stars as people think, I imagine after the 4th or 5th pick there will be a decent decline In "future all star talent".

There's lots of ways to look at what W&G might've been getting at. I'm not under the assumption that he was talking about landing an unprotected pick for 2014 (although that would be sweet). Moreso, I think the goal is to accumlate assets in that draft that allow flexibility. Seeing as though our pick should project in the 15-20 range next year, we might be looking to pick up an extra #1 to give us the ability to get up into the last half of the lottery. Something like the Thunder did in the 2010 Draft (where they had #'s 18, 21, and 26). They dealt 21 and 26 for 11 (while taking on Morris Peterson) and got Cole Aldrich, who they felt might be their Center of the future. They didn't have Perkins at the time

Re: Truth And Rumors 2/18

Agreed completely. Based on what W&G said about trying to acquire a 2014 pick, I assume two scenarios are in play:

1. Have an overwhelming amount of assets that could possibly make a team consider trading the #1 pick in 2014 on draft day(to acquire Wiggins)

2. Have an overwheming amount of draft picks so that we are the #1 team able to do a Harden like deal

3. Have an overwhelming amount of draft picks so that if we have to execute a S&T for you know who, after we send a few picks to the Heat we still have plenty left over to keep adding young talent around Kyrie, #6,TT, and Waiters

4. Have the ability to do both #2 and #3

Re: Truth And Rumors 2/18

All, if not, atleast a couple of these players will be traded at the deadline: Gibson, Speights, Walton, Asspie, Gee. Not sure for what or whom...but something will happen for the Cavaliers by Thursday. Just a feeling.

Old news is old, see Trades, Free Agency and The Draft forum

Re: Truth And Rumors 2/18

Is this Cavs only stuff? If so, feel free to move this post somewhere else...

I think of it as a trade deadline thread. Mostly Cavs stuff but if other important news breaks, it won't be surprising to find it here. It can be something of a free-for-all as the deadline approaches.

See the Trades forum if you want to go into some of the other stuff in depth.

Re: Truth And Rumors 2/18

I knew that was a rental the second they traded for Monta. That front office hasnt even ATTEMPTED to be great since they got Monta

The Bucks really need to either trade Jennings or let him walk. Same with Monta. Tank like hell the next two or three years and go full rebuild. They're never going to be a great team with Jennings at the point.

Re: Truth And Rumors 2/18

I shudder to think about a team with Ersan Ilyasova as its best player.
