Truth And Rumors (trade deadline talk)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Re: Truth And Rumors 2/18

I would add him to a team that was already mostly built and also a team that already knew how to play good team and individual defense. I would not add him to this Cavs team now and definitely not with that contract.

Bad thing is as much as I disliked Mike Brown the Cavs never played Defense under Silas and haven't under Scott either... that was the 1 thing Brown did bring to the table....how in Cleveland our LA he couldn't bring in an asst coach that could run a solid offense with 2 of teh best players in the game is beyond me

Re: Truth And Rumors 2/18

Speights is decent but he's being overrated with his short but impressive stint with the Cavs. He's bigger than we thought but he's not explosive at all. He's not good at scoring inside. He's got a decent touch, but I think he has gotten lucky on some the shots he throws up there. He's at best an average rebounder and defender. Doesn't seem like a team first player. It has been nice to get someone that brings something to the table, after we've watched Zeller, Hollins, Semih, etc on a consistent basis. But Speights is not worth keeping especially if you can get something for him now. I'm sure we could get a much better player for the same amount of money we would spend on keeping Speights.

I think if we are involved in anything it will be in a facilitating role, or maybe some minor deal where we help a contender with a helping piece like a Walton..paying part or most of salary for a pick in return. Our main objective now is attempting to get ourselves in better position for the 2014 draft I would assume.

Re: Truth And Rumors 2/18

Myth. You are saying that about the guy that coached the 4th best offense in the 2009 NBA http://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/CLE/2009.html and in his last CLE season, had a better ranked offense than defense. http://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/CLE/2010.html 6th best offense, 7th best defense.

My feelings were strong on Brown's lack of control of offense.

Even if statistically, his offense *rated* wherever, to suggest that it was anything other than LeBron dictating and decided what he wanted to do on the court, would be erroneous. We saw flashes of Keuster and then Mike Malone get Bron to buy into offensive schemes usually for stretches of the season early, but it would always go to hell in the handbasket because either Brown never had the power to make Bron/team stick with it, or he never put the priority on it being established and ran consistently.

Over the course of 82, I never saw anything consistently resembling a strong offense. I saw LeBron, and as he went, his teammates went on offense.

Much different from what I see in Miami. And I call myth on anyone who says that it is strictly related to how much "talent" Miami has. I see Pat Riley and Spoelstra having the balls to adapt their offensive philosophy and keep Bron consistently buying into what/how they want to attack.

Not a trade or rumor, so back to that. Just had to clear that up, as it is all fresh enough to me to still feel that if we had stronger voices in the organization/coaching, I still felt from 2007-2010, we could have won a few chips.

Re: Truth And Rumors 2/18

Since the assumption is that talent wise, we will not have a top 5 pick in the 2014 draft(which the Cavs obviously believe is either super deep or has 1-2 transcendent players in it) what strategy do they have to getting what they want out of 2014 draft? If the talent is really considered so good in the top few picks, could a package of our own 2014 picks coupled with multiple other picks(heat 2015, sac, memphis) really net us either an unprotected pick prior to the 2014 lottery or a top 1-3 pick once the lottery is set?

Re: Truth And Rumors 2/18

I think the biggest questions are: Is what Speights is doing for us sustainable (or a fluke)? And if we deem his history proves otherwise; shouldn't we cash it in now? If we can?

Not sure this is the right thread, but I so 100% agree. I think our teams with Lebron the last 2 years were good enough to win it all if we had a better coach. Not sure who we could have brought in that the team would have listened too, but then again i am a fan, not the gm so its not my job.

Besides Parker, Wiggins and the PF from Texas (Julius Randle), is there really any body else who is "a can't miss prospect from 14?" I dont see anyone trading away a top 3 pick in 2014. A lot of flaws that are not evident in HS get exposed in college. I am not sure the draft in 2014 is as deep with all stars as people think, I imagine after the 4th or 5th pick there will be a decent decline In "future all star talent". A guy like Stephen Adams is projected to top 7 next year, so I am not sure getting a pick in 2014 in the 6-15 range is as lucrative as people make it out to be.

LBJ didn't fully buy into that until last year. His first year in Miami, there were some of the same struggles.

I'm sure MB had something to do with that, but I also think LBJ matured after he lost for the second time in the finals, with a completely different team. The light bulb went on, and he became a player more willing to accept his role, including playing down low.

Pat Riley.

We have a guy with the championship pedigree/Pat Riley approach now in Byron Scott. Just wish we could have had a few more voices like that from 07-10. But I digress to keep this thread on topic

Just please hold the MB praise for like... ever.

I am. It's not the right thread. :chuckles:

Revisit Mike Brown's offense (or lack of offense) somewhere else. (I'm not singling you out, Lee.)

AMC brought up the possibility of a S&T for Speights after the season. It would give the Cavs more opportunity to evaluate him, though it might upset Tank (and other tankers) during this season.

Of course the Cavs wouldn't have control over whether he would be amenable to a S&T, but it would give Speights a lot more choice over where to land in terms of a decent payday.

Re: Truth And Rumors 2/18

Something to take into account in regards to the mention of Speights value as a Sign and Trade this summer. I'm pretty sure that per the new CBA, a rule goes into effect this summer that while teams over the salary cap can be involved in S&T deals, teams over the luxury cap can not and also any S&T deal that the net result would end up with one of the teams involved going above the luxury tax line can also not happen. Certainly not a rule that will handcuff our ability to S&T Speights entirely, but something to consider as we draw up a list of teams that might want to acquire him.
