Truth And Rumors (trade deadline talk)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Re: Truth And Rumors 2/18

I'll be completely shocked if the Cavs stay pat. I'm just surprised Walton's expiring contract hasn't been brought up much. He has been playing pretty well though in the 2nd unit which makes me believe we might not move him.

Expiring contracts are a hot commodity nowadays in the NBA and Grant could very easily in return receive a 1st round pick, preferably in the 14' draft.

Grant is a low key guy, most of his deals come straight out of left field. It's not the type of situation where a rumor pops up and the discussions have been going on for a week or so, it's more like you wake up the next morning and you say "WTF".. what just happened lol.

This is all pretty true, and truth be told, if a rumor comes out and the Cavs are involved, just assume the deal is dead at that point.

I think Grant hates dealing in public and if it reaches that point, he's reluctant to pull the trigger, or he just won't be pressured into making a decision. Either way, whatever we hear publicly, won't happen.

That is a good point that most "deals" we hear talked about regarding the Cavs, only surface in the media after the deal is dead. The Andrew Bynum situation is a good example of that.

Re: Truth And Rumors 2/18

I have no inside info, but I thought all along that if we cant get anything we like for Speights, we are not making another move.

Thing is even without another move, because of the injury to AV, I have to give Grant an A for this years tread deadline dealings. Keeping flexibility is just as important as acquiring assets.

Re: Truth And Rumors 2/18

I think we should at least get one more first rounder. Whether it be by facilitating, or a straight up trade, i think one more would cement us as a perennial draft power.

This is my thought too. Once AV went down, I lowered all expectations. The fact that Grant was able to snag the Memphis future first for what could amount to rented cap space (if we don't retain Speights, Ellington, and Selby) was a home run by itself in my opinion.

Obviously, given their flexibility, and cap space they are still in the position to make another small move. I hope they do.

I also agree with the importance of discipline with regard to our cap situation moving into the future. It's going to be more and more important as we move further into the new NBA landscape mediated by the current CBA.

Even if they do nothing else but are able to sign Oden to a reasonable contract, that too, could be viewed as a positive move because it just costs cap space/money (but that depends where you are on the Oden discussion, and I don't want that to open up into this thread).

Maybe I'm in the very small minority here. But am I the only one that would be sorta okay if we did nothing?

I actually would like to see Speights and Walton a Cav next year. But if something is out there to improve us going forward, by all means we should do it.

I think a trade is very possible, it's just that whatever deal we take back needs to have expired by the 2014-15 offseason.

You look at the supposed deal surrounding Ben Gordon who is making 12.5M and on the books for next year as well, and it would sense that Charlotte would do a deal for say Luke Walton and Boobie Gibson. Is getting 12.5M off the books for next year worth an unprotected pick to them, though? Most would say no, but you never what a cash strapped owner will do.

I could see an interesting scenario play out where the Lakers try and unload Pau Gasol (owed 19M next 2 years) so they have cap flexibility going into this off-season. They aren't going to win a title this year and Pau doesn't serve any long-term goal for them. Whether it's Cleveland or another city, a pretty easy deal could be reached.

We could trade Speights, Gibson, and Walton for Pau today and he comes off the book before 2014-15. He doesn't really fill a long-term need though so the Cavs don't make a ton of sense. I think like any other deadline, we'll see some big names moved, mostly for future flexibility. Like any trade we enter into, future assets seem to be most important.

I understand where you're going with this, but I disagree.

I don't see Speights having a long-term future with this team. Not if the Cavs are continue to place a high premium on their flexibility and cap space. I could see keeping Speights with a decent contract if we had traded AV. There isn't the money available for both.

Also, keep in mind that with all of these rookies and picks we have (Kyrie, Tristan, Dion, and this year's first), we are going to have to extend these guys in the future. I'd rather hold off on extending Speights if it means I don't have to sweat a Kyrie and Tristan extension in the same year. I'd rather extend TT at this point than to re-sign Speights.

Also, I've said it before, but I'm all for keeping Walton around, but only if he joins Coach Scott's coaching assistants on the sidelines.

I am not sure walton gets us much, so his vet leadership is key. I am way ok with him sticking around

As for Speights, i dont see how he doesnt opt out of his contract, and while he is playing well, no one has ever accused Speights of being a good locker room or team guy. I like Speights game allot more than most when we got him, but once his contract situation came around, my fear was that he could actually help us when enough games to go from 4th worst record to 7th worst, and since he most likely is only a 3 month rental, i would prefer not to have that happen.

Re: Truth And Rumors 2/18

Please get rid of Casspi. We don't even need anything in return for him.

I still see us making a move. Probably nothing major.

If the Cavs really are serious about pursuing Greg Oden, with Varejao coming back next year and presumably another big man draft pick coming our way, I don't see how Speights has a role on this team moving forward.

Re: Truth And Rumors 2/18

Barg has a bad contract I won't disagree...but anyone that sits there and act like he can't help this team out big time and fill it up as a great stretch 4 is kidding themselves...I wondr how many have actually watched him play more than 10 games in his career that have commented in the last thread....he is a talent...just an overpaid one at the moment ... as far as Speights goes he can be that stretch 4 if need be and he has a mean streak... I'd like to sign him but I think we need a big time scorer in the frontcourt and all of our assets should be used to land one somehow

Re: Truth And Rumors 2/18

I would add him to a team that was already mostly built and also a team that already knew how to play good team and individual defense. I would not add him to this Cavs team now and definitely not with that contract.
