Urban Meyer hired by OSU

Re: Urban Meyer Just Asked Live About OSU

I'm always wondering why they aren't calling simple throws for Braxton, either.. Have they done one designed screen pass this year other then the one to Stoneburner earlier in the year?

But anyway, he looked a lot better passing the ball. The ball dropped by Corey Brown on the first series was one of his best throws on the year. Perfectly placed over two defenders, he just couldn't hang on.

Re: Urban Meyer Just Asked Live About OSU

While Fickell was put in an impossible situation this year, his coaching job last night (and really during the last two weeks) was incredible.

Braxton Miller is a completely different player than the one who was on the field against Miami.

The team just looked like the knew they were going to win. Even when Wisky scored late, it answered right back with a great kickoff return and later the TD.

For all his faults, Fickell did an A+ job getting the job done over the open week.

He'll step aside for Urban Meyer at the end of the season (probably before the bowl game), but he earned my respect with last night's performance.

Yeah, you know it really makes difference when the guy isn't worried about getting yanked every play.

Re: Urban Meyer Just Asked Live About OSU

That doesn't change the fact that he is a bad head coach, for fuck's sake.

I don't think anybody here will deny that he is in WELL over his head. At this point, all people are doing is recognizing the obvious (that he is bad) and that he better not be here past this season except in one or two extremely exceptional circumstances (ie Meyer says "Give me one more year")

I don't know of anyone really arguing that Fickell should stay at HC beyond this year. It's obvious the job is too big for him, but constantly rehashing that seems silly to me. He's probably doing about the best job he can given his credentials.

Also, what is everyone's opinion on brining Fickell back as DC, assuming Heacock retires?

Re: Urban Meyer Just Asked Live About OSU

Can anyone figure out why Hyde isn't allowed to run the ball in short yardage situations? For that matter, can anyone figure out why he doesn't get the majority of the carries that now go to Hall? I like Hall, but going on this season alone, it appeared to me that Hyde was the better RB.

Spouting off on Twitter about his lack of playing time probably didn't help.

There is roughly ZERO chance you demote your head coach to a coordinator position to work for a head coach who has no repore with him whatsoever and would almost certainly want to bring his own staff in.

Totally agree with this.

Of all the coaches on our staff, Meyer has connections to only two of them (Stan Drayton and Jim Heacock). Meyer had a rocky relationship with Drayton when he coached RBs at UF and Heacock seems like a retirement candidate.

Well, the first thing I'd say to this is that if spouting off on twitter one time = no playing time while getting suspending for over half the season = immediate starter upon returning....I have a problem with that disciplinary approach.

But, while it probably didn't help, he didn't get any time before he spouted off on twitter after Herron came back. And that included a couple of short yardage situations in which they decided to bring in Hall instead of Hyde, and it didn't make sense against Illinois, didn't make sense last night, and still doesn't make sense.

Re: Urban Meyer Just Asked Live About OSU

I, for one, haven't really been that impressed with Hyde outside of his nice run against Nebraska.

He seems to lack vision, the same problem which plagued Boom earlier in his career.

Re: Urban Meyer Just Asked Live About OSU

Is the move to linebacker just temporary for Rod Smith? I like him more then I do Hyde and Hall.

I'm not sure. There have been a few running backs with fumbling troubles that were able to turn it around. I think with Boom leaving and Berry seemingly making no impact, it could Rod a chance to switch back.

Re: Urban Meyer Just Asked Live About OSU

I read they pushed back their announcements to the 19th so that Stanford can visit Oregon. Regardless, they'll both be Buckeyes and will certainly be Fickell's two biggest commits since he took over the reigns.

Are new recruits signing on because of Fickell or because of who the next head coach might be? Or are they simply going to OSU because it's well, OSU? Which of the three is the main reason we are getting new recruits?

He warmed up with the RBs last night and by most accounts he will stay there.
