Victor

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
In order to maximize a quality big, you need a strong coach and strong system. Maximizing guards is for the mediocre coaches who are lucky they made it out of the Sonny Vaccarro Shoe Ghetto of the AAU.

What does this mean for Mobley?

Mobley has worked with Antonio Lang and Luke Walton on big man skills. In the off-season he works on his perimeter game with Olin Simplis. Hopefully that hybrid is going to work out!

Yeah but your point wasn’t just about coaching on discrete skills. I thought you were saying that unlike a guard who can just play individual hero ball, a big man depends on a team’s entire system of play as led by a strong, smart, coach who sets up that system.

Oh totally. I'm a fan of motion offense out of horns. I feel this ideal offense is predicated on Mobley developing his perimeter skills more, which he is doing. Luke Walton should be the offensive coordinator and bring the system he ran in NorCal - but somehow he is only an influence rather than the guy who designs the game plan. I'm interested to see if his role grows next year, because I feel the answer is already on the bench.

I wonder how we measure success for Victor? What's the over under of averaging at least 45 games a season for over 5 seasons?

You have to be excited to get him,but almost seems impossible that he will be healthy. Hopefully that's just too pessimistic.

I honestly think he could be one of the most impactful 2 way players ever bc of his coordination, length, plus actual offensive skill. I honestly think the only thing that could keep him from that peak is his health. With his body makeup weight, gangliness, length. I'd guess it's a 30-40% chance his health holds up for the most part ala Durant and he becomes an all-timer.

Wemby just 1-4 with an assist and rebound through the first seven minutes of play

I’m calling it now - OVERRATED!

I think he ends up being a bust compared to his hype. Just don’t think his size (weight/strength) and poor shot mechanics will translate to the NBA.

I was sort of half-joking above but I do think it’s going to be very hard for him to live up to the insane hype. He kind of looks to me like he has above average but not remarkable skills for a rookie, and he’s getting credit for being extremely tall and having good skills. But he’ll need GREAT skills to live up to the hype.

For example, he’s been stripped twice trying for dribble penetration, and that feels like it will be an issue. You have to have tremendous handles to protect your dribble when you’re 7’4 and his don’t look that unusual.

Also doesn’t look to me like his movement and instincts on defense are as good as Mobley, although he’s a couple of inches taller which helps with rim protection

On the other hand, the way he blocked Millers three pointer was impressive and looks repeatable

I think he’ll bust. He’s going to get hurt if he tries playing like a 7’4 KD. He should be a center.

Just fell flat on his ass trying for a spin move, although he bailed himself out with a pass
