Will the Cavs get caught in the Ferry undertow?

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Most of the people who think everyone is "too sensitive" or trying to be "politically correct" are white males, who happen to be the one group that has never been descrimiated against in this country
Oh here we go...

I dont think Z has been part of this organization for a year.

They better get to the bottom of this ASAP. Remember, LeBron has an opt out next year and so does Love. Could get ugly.

Jeez, cart before the horse much? :chuckle:

Unless they discover barrels full of racist comments by multiple members of the Cavs staff, this thing's gonna be ugly for a day, someone will be punished, and will probably blow over shortly into camp.

Not that racism should ever just "blow over"... It's a serious allegation for sure. But it sure sounds like it's a former employee, and if not, as long as it's not Griff himself, it's probably not going to be that ugly.

Doesn't matter, you want to deal with it ASAP. You need to please LeBron. He spoke out against Sterling, sure that was different but you don't want a hint of racism. This give him an "out" and could go to any team without being criticized. He leaves, then you can expect Love to not resign, then we'd be back to square one.

This mess is just so Cleveland.
It's not a mess by any means. You people blow it up way bigger than it really is. I'm getting really sick of what this country is becoming. And to the people suggesting it, there's no chance david griffin is gone if it was his writing

Why do people think it's someone still with the team when in the report it clearly says 'Former'?

Dear god....

And some of you guys are so desperately trying to make this into a "Cleveland" thing. It's like when things look good, you're uncomfortable, so you start wish-casting things to be bad again. It's a comfort zone.

listen, read the PDF it says "Former", so whoever wrote it isnt around anymore.

you have 2 choices, Mike Brown and Chris Grant

Im saying its Grant

Would be so awesome if its Brown

"The racial slur uttered by Atlanta Hawks General Manager Danny Ferry regarding Luol Deng seems to trace back to the Cavaliers organization, according to the scouting report obtained Friday by the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Parts of the report are redacted, including the author’s name, but an entry dated June 6, 2014 refers to Deng as “a good guy on the cover but he’s an African. He has a little two-step in him = says what you like to hear, but behind closed doors he could be killing you. Con isn’t bad but it’s there. African-like, store front looks great but there’s a black market section in the back.”

The report is labeled as coming from a 2013-14 Front Office and the word “Former” is legible, but the rest of the name and title is blacked out. The report begins “From a physical when we got him, Chicago had run him into the ground. We tried to correct and manage it when we got him. People say that he is worn down but I disagree and think there is more left in his body.”

The Cavs acquired Deng from the Bulls in January. They are the only two teams for which he has played.

After the African reference, the report continues that Deng is sensitive to seemingly trivial issues such as when his bobblehead is released and how much of his apparel is for sale in the team shop.

“Luol kind of treated Cleveland like a pit stop after the trade, where he probably became more protective of his body and focused on the contract because he didn’t know his long term plan,” the report continued. “He said some things privately to media but denied them publically (sp) and said it wasn’t him.”

The New York Daily News published a story, about a month after Deng’s arrival, citing a source close to him complaining of the Cavs’ culture and lack of discipline.

“The stuff going on in practice would never be tolerated by the coaching staff or the front office back in Chicago,” the source close to Deng told the Daily News. “It’s a mess.”

Deng never denied making the comments to people close to him when asked about it, but he expressed frustration over the tone and nature of the story. During a trip to New York shortly after, Deng approached a Cavs writer and asked why he didn’t point out Mitch Lawrence, the author of the original Daily News story, because he wanted to speak with him about the article.

The report concludes with the author writing, “I would have no problem bringing him back,” and adding that Charlotte, Phoenix, Dallas and the Lakers all had varying degrees of interest in him at last season’s trade deadline. The Cavs were known to be seeking a first-round pick for Deng at the deadline, but couldn’t find one.

The racial comments have set off a firestorm in Atlanta. Majority owner Bruce Levenson has agreed to sell the team after a racial e-mail he sent in 2012 was discovered. Now Ferry announced Friday he is taking an indefinite leave of absence after he was caught on tape saying Deng has “a little African in him.”

The scouting report released Friday makes it clear Ferry was reading the remarks off paper. The original author of the remarks remains a mystery.

“This has been an incredibly difficult time for him and his family and it is my hope that this time away from the Hawks organization allows him the privacy he needs to listen to the community, to learn about his mistakes and to being the long process of personal healing,” Hawks CEO Steve Koonin said in a release announcing Ferry’s self-imposed leave of absence. “As a human being, manager and friend, I wish him well as he undergoes this process.”

****************************************

Unfortunately, a few of the bolded phrases make this unlikely to be a Chris Grant report, especially the part about what teams had interest in him at the trade deadline(Grant was already fired by then) and the "I would have no problem bringing him back...." line(Not something that would be said by Grant)

I am 100% confident it's not Gilbert as he would not be the person you'd go to for that type of report and I'm pretty sure his relationship with Ferry is ICY COLD. I absolutely hope it is not Griffin that this came from. Assuming that it was neither Gilbert or Griffin who made the report, the two of them need to find out who did the report and fire them immediately. #1 for saying what they said, which has no place being said by someone representing our organization. #2 for being so chummy with Ferry that they would share info on what other teams valued him, what they though of his play, and that they would also bring him back on June 6th, a time well before we would have known LeBron would come back and therefore a time that we would need any competitive edge possible in retaining Deng(even as a last possible option) and therefore should not be sharing info on him with a rival for his services.

Regardless, this well continue to get play until the originator of the report is revealed so the Cavs should be proactive to root that person out and let them go.

Also, unfortunately, until that happens, this seems like it may be headed more to CavsTalk than Around the NBA

This is ridiculous. I see nothing wrong with what was said.

While possible, Mike Brown was fired on May 12th. This report was filed June 6th and seemed to indicate a lot of present tense, "we" references when referring to the Cavs.

Also, I took the "former" designation to mean that the report was from the Cavaliers, a former team of Dengs, and not that it was necessarily from a "former" employee of the Cavs.

But the quote is ignorant in a jingoistic/nationalistic sort of way, in my mind. Racist toward African born players, not African-American players and so it very well could have come from an African-American scout/coach/assistant/front office member, though I think the odds of it are low. I would bet the person who made that report might make similar disparaging remarks about a "Euro" player who had some perceived mental make up issues or on court patterns.

I think Ferry, and this is not an excuse for him at all because I absolutely think he failed in his duties as one of the heads of that franchise, but I think he lazily thought that the whole group of owners and organizational member on the conference were bonded in their solidarity and similarity in being American born(white, black, and whatever else) that he incorrectly assumed it would be ok for him to repeat this comment made on the report about Deng. And that is perhaps why we see so many people who have known him for a long time(Embry, Billy King, Buford, etc) sort of stick up for him, because to their experience he's not "racist" in the traditional way americans compartmentalize race as a black/white skin color thing. But again, I am only speculating and am not justifying Ferry at all.
