Will the Cavs get caught in the Ferry undertow?

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
they have found the scouting report everybody's talking about and it looks like it came from someone in the Cavs organization (presumably Chris Grant)

http://media.cmgdigital.com/shared/news/documents/2014/09/12/LuolDeng.pdf
"from a physical when we got him Chicago had run him into the ground. We tried to correct & manage it when we got him. People say that he's worn down but i disagree & think there is more left in his body"

"He's a good guy on the cover but he's an African..."
Doubt it was Chris Grant. Most of that report references stuff after Grant was fired, like deadline stuff and contract offers to bring him back.

I'm guessing someone in the Cavs chain of command is probably gonna get canned over it, or at least get the severe reprimand that Ferry got. My money is on canned if it's someone lower than Griff, or a very public scolding if it is in fact Griff. I doubt Griffin is taking the time though to communicate personally with another GM about them signing a free agent away from us. Guessing it's a guy somewhere down the pipeline, probably someone leftover from the Grant regime who still had ties to Ferry.

If it's discovered who, I don't see Gilbert taking any chances. He'll likely make an example of him.

its funny reading that, because thats the vibe i kind of got from luol. aalways thought he was a little shady, and put on a front. and yes it does look like that african comment came from a cavs source. oh well though, who cares.. i just want everyone to move on from this.
I'm sure you do. Just "moving on" from things like this is not how you deal with it. It's unacceptable, and whoever wrote it needs to be outed.

why? it was a private thing.. he didnt go ANYTHING with ill intent. just little note for his colleagues to read. there's no reason to make this a deal.. treating someone differently cause their back ground or making some kind of public statement is a no no, but this is fine. every one is way too sensitive and looking for attention. everyone needs to get off their damn high horse

how about those lines from one of his former teammates:

"he's just unhappy right now in CLE. i talked to XXX a good amount and XXX told me that it's a mess in CLE because XXX don't get along because they both pound the ball and want shots" .....

:chuckle:

More I read about it, I guess it's still possible it was Grant. He was still here less than 2 weeks before the deadline so he would have known where the interest is coming from. We had a few insiders here share that there definitely was interest in Deng around the league, and we heard that well ahead of the deadline.

Gilbert and company better hope it was Grant or one of his guys. Otherwise there's gonna be a public PR execution from ol' Danny Gilbert I assume.

Either way, I expect the Cavs to address it immediately. They're gonna want this wrapped up well ahead of media day.

I may be naive but I still dont know what it even means. I have never heard of this slur and it certainly is a slur before. Chris Grant and Mike Brown are friends of Danny Ferry but I dont understand how he could have gotten hold an email sent by some cavs employee to someone else. The whole thing makes little sense. Also listening to Ferry's conference call he didnt disagree with the slur so he has to go. If I am Dan Gilbert I need to fire whoever said that today if he still in the organization unless perish the thought it was said at the ownership level-then the CAVS have done the most Cleveland thing ever.

I will say also the Deng never impressed me. I would not be surprised if he was a clubhouse lawyer kind of guy. He definately did not buy in to the CAVS and Mike Brown. The bit about Dion and Kyrie is priceless but basically gets to the point of the slur. The guy was brought in to be a leader and was obviously was not.

It's possible that Grant or someone who left with him forwarded their scouting report on Deng to Ferry. I mean, that's what had to have happened here, right? I can't imagine a team would just share their scouting reports with another team.

And if it's someone within the Cavs organization other than Griffin (and even he may not be safe), they'll be fired over this. Gilbert is taking no chances here.

Really thinking more and more it was anyone who was currently with the Cavs at the time the report was sent. At that point, Lebron was far from a sure thing and Deng was still our player and one I imagine we would have re-signed if we lost out on Bron and got him at the right price.

So why would our front office be sending out helpful information to market competitors for our own free agent?

Gotta be someone who went by the wayside with Grant, or Grant himself.

Where is Wine and Gold when we need him?

I assume so too.

The date of the letter in question is June 6, 2014 in the PDF file (long after Grant's departure), and it sounds like the writer is summing up the entire Deng/Cavs experience. So it doesn't sound like it would be Grant. Admittedly, other dates in the file are wrong (Dec. 31, 2014 is the date of another one).

At the same time, I am wondering why the Hawks would have been able to get this much information from current Cavs staff. Are they all friends of Ferry doing him a favor? Do organizations share this kind of stuff all the time (when it doesn't impact the direction of the club)? It looks like the Hawks got input from multiple people (or at least multiple times) from the Cavs.

I don't think this is going to end well for the person who wrote the note.

First off, I doubt it was Griffin. He was hired after Ferry was fired.

The way the report reads, it sounds like they guy still has a job "I'd have no problem bringing him back", that rules out Grant.

Koby Altman (pro personnel manager) joined the organization after Ferry, not likely him.

I doubt it was any of the scouts, they'd be on the road too much to know the lockerroom / contractual stuff.

I doubt they're talking to assistant coaches.

Z has a relationship with Ferry.

Trent Redden, assistant GM joined the org in 2006.

At the end of the day, it was a dumb comment, an inappropriate comment, but not something someone should lose a job over.

Most of the people who think everyone is "too sensitive" or trying to be "politically correct" are white males, who happen to be the one group that has never been descrimiated against in this country

Yeah, I just posted something similar. I doubt anyone currently employed by the Cavs in early June would have been giving intel and tips to a competing team trying to sign away our own free agent.
