For the majority of the season, I was on the "Garland is the future of our PG position" side of the "debate" (for lack of a better word) between he and Collin, because it seems like a given that they can't co-exist longterm.
With Collin seemingly "figuring it out" on the fly coinciding with the coaching change, I'm now at least hedging -- maybe completely flipped around. Until that turnaround, I saw his absolute ceiling as something like a Lou Williams 6th man (which isn't 'nothing'; LouWill is a beast).
In the last 30+ games of the season, Collin was putting up a pretty astonishing (for a 20yo sophomore) 23.6 points on 49/44/87 splits with 4 assists and 3 rebounds in about 35mpg. People may point to his advanced numbers and all of the analytics seems to hate Collin, but I am still of a mind that a guy who can do *that* with his raw numbers at such a young age ... the upside is more McCollum, Oladipo, Beal than a high-end 6th man.
More important than all of that, Collin was really starting to pace himself the right way, understand when to take over, and winning games for us (or being a primary facilitator to winning games) in the last month of the season. Do that for long enough (and he was showing no signs of slowing down), the analytics will eventually catch up to what you're doing.
As for his place in the lockerroom hierarchy, some guys lead vocally, others lead by example. If guys like Larry Nance Jr. can't see that a guy being fixated on becoming the best basketball player possible and not much else, it unfortunately tells me more about Larry than Collin.
Against all odds, this guy has a real chance to be special. I just hope his "figuring it out" wasn't negatively impacted by the interruption in the season.
