Pitching

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
So who’s next up. Who are the most likely to impact for us now that we’ve cleared out Kluber, Bauer, and Carrasco.

Bieber is obviously TOR. Carlos can hopefully maintain for another 1-2 seasons.

I think it’s too early to truly tell which way Civale, Plesac, and McKenzie arc. I’m hopeful that 2 out of the three can become the type of starters we’ve become accustomed to and that they’ve shown flashes of. But I would be surprised if only one of them cements long term as a MOR-TOR type of guy.

Who’s next up on the pipeline behind those guys?

I'm a Trevor Bauer fan. I like his outside the box thinking and his work ethic, but he'd be the first to tell you that he doesn't have the natural ability that Clevinger has. Clevinger is a damn good pitcher when he takes the bump, and has the "stuff" that few pitchers possess.

Hankins and Espino are the two most highly regarded guys in the system, but they're just 19 and 20 years old respectively so they're a few years away.

We've already seen a little bit of Logan Allen in the bigs, but he's still just 23 and was very effective in 2017 and 2018 in the minors. Don't think they're throwing in the towel on him yet by any means.

Sam Hentges and Scott Moss are probably the next two that would get a shot.

Just a quick note.. Relievers are more likely to be impactful in the short term than many are giving credit for.. Excluding the guys already mentioned.. Here are the next two...

Look for Emmanuel Clase to be THEE most impactful RP in the system.. He's got the triple digit high riding/cutting/moving heater to go along with a devastating slider & the control to make them work..he'd be # 1 in coming impactfulness..

Hentges, now finally healthy, could be a tweener (ceiling as a MOR SP/floor as a high leverage RP).. Sam Hentges has come all the way back from surgery & is now poised to make noise in the coming 30 games, in the Fall Desert Leagues, in Winter Baseball and ultimately out of the gate from Spring training in Goodyear. Big and strong and extra stingy with the runs.. Hentges has a chance to be special now that he's fully healthy..

I like Lenny Torres and Carlos Vargas as well in roles TBD..

Good question..

The sooner Hentges moves to the pen, the better. He just doesn't seem cut out to be a starter, but could be a really good reliever.

How about this staff in 2021?

Rotation: Bieber, Clevinger (yep, keep him one more year), Civale, Plesac, McKenzie

Bullpen: Karinchak, Clase, Wittgren, Maton, Hill, Carrasco, Gose, Ollie Perez (if Wainwright can pitch at 39, so can Ollie)

OMG

Phil Maton has been incredible. In 10.2 innings he's allowed one earned run, walked none, and struck out 14. Considering we got him for practically nothing (international bonus money) this looks like another Indians steal. The coaching staff has turned him around 180 degrees from the basket case he was in San Diego.

100%, something has finally clicked with him and he is showing the promise he did in the minors.

There are quite a few relievers in the upper levels (Nelson and Sandlin to name a few) that should get an opportunity in Cleveland before Gose.

I also wouldn't be so quick to resign Carrasco to bullpen duty. His days as a highly effective starter are far from over.

What the Indians have done in putting together this bullpen is incredible.

They got Maton in exchange for international signing bonus space. The Padres practically gave him away.

They got Hand and Cimber for Francisco Mejia, who has 38 at-bats this year hitting .079. Just this season Hand is 10-for-10 in saves and Cimber has a 2.16 ERA.

They got Wittgren for minor league pitcher Jordan Milbrath, who has since been released twice and is out of baseball.

Ollie Perez was signed as a free agent.

Karinchak and Hill were drafted.

Just an amazing job of player acquisition. I say let's keep making trades with the Padres. They always seem to work out well.

I was thinking we could use a lefty to replace Hand, especially with Perez being 39 next year. Nothing against the two guys you mentioned, though.

I would be fine with trading Clevinger and putting Carrasco in the rotation. The sooner we trade him the more we get in return. Any team getting him today would have him for three playoff runs plus two full seasons. We should be able to get quite a haul - more than for Bauer who had 1.5 years of control left.

I agree with Carrasco, I only stated to switch to the bullpen cause of the way this season went and his struggles. Not having a full off season plus the wacky year doesn't help him build back up strength.

Now with Gose. I have a hunch he will get his command down. The voice towards him from peeps is just like what they thought of Hill a few seasons back. If Gose doesn't make the roster next season, then it's on Gose because he will have a legit chance.

Kyle Nelson IS a lefty

I don't think anybody in the system has the arm that Gose does outside of Clase and Karinchack. If Gose can get it under control then holy shit that's a BP nobody would want to face.
