2021 NBA Draft Safari

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I agree that if Suggs or Green are the pick, one of Sexland will be either moved to the bench or traded. I actually think Suggs is a great fit next to Sexton, and Green a good enough fit next to Garland.

But I don't agree that Sexland was a mistake. Garland was clearly the best talent available at 5 in 2019. In their two years together, neither of Sexland has hindered the other's development. Garland's value is probably higher or as high as any other player selected after him. Taking BPA in those drafts have set us up nicely for this draft IMO, that we can take Green OR Suggs and feel great about getting good value back for one of Sexland to construct a team that makes more sense.

I don't know, I just think talent accumulation is the most important thing when starting a rebuild.
Green could play the 3.

Johnson get dinged due to leaving Duke (and IMG before that) but is it really that much different than someone like Lamelo leaving his high school and then ditching his UCLA schollie? It just seems like a common occurence these days with top prospects to transfer and/or leave school early. If he falls out of the top 10 some team could have a really nice steal with that kid. It's not like KPJ situation where behavioral/maturity red flags were everywhere.

You’re absolutely right.

Plus, Johnson grew up in Wisconsin and returned to his home school from IMG before even playing a game.

As people see more of Mobleys game on both sides of the ball and see more of Jarret Allen’s game, what the board opinion on how well they could play together?

Obviously, some of their minutes could be staggered so they’re not always on the court at the same time but ultimately, could they okay at a high level together in a way that is advantageous on both sides of the ball for the first 6 minutes of the game, the first 6 minutes of the second half, and the final 6-8 minutes of the game.

Would we be at a defensive disadvantage with two super tall guys in today’s NBA with so much footspeed and athleticism 1-4? Or could they handle switches and one on one matchups against smaller athletic PFs and big wings
True. Good question.

He's the clearest future franchise player with the highest ceiling in this draft. Been my #1 since I found myself glued to the the screen watching a whole USC vs Cal Irvine game early in the season.

I keep coming back to this...

He's better than Bosh at the same point in time in their development.

He's a NBA pedigree prospect, only scratching the surface of how good he can be and he's guaranteed to approach the league like a pro because his dad was a veteran who raised him and his brother on pro ball checks.

I wanted him in December before we got Allen and now I think he would be a game changing matchup problem next to him as a 4/5 that only teams with two seven footers who can play at the same time could counter (Brooklyn w KD, Memphis when JJJ comes back)

He's going to be one of the first two picks so I'm not 100% sure we need to win the lottery to get him. I'm silently really hoping Cade has a crazy March so some GM has visions of him being the perimeter guy he can build around (I don't think he is, but winning the B12 tourney and showing really well in the tourney could sell him)

I'd be willing to explore trading up from 4-8 to 1-2 to get Mobley, that's how bullish I am on him being the best franchise player AND fit for our recent lottery picks in this draft.

I'm going to shut up about him now so I don't jinx it.

1. Mobley
2. Kuminga
3. Barnes

For my Cavs wishlist as of now.
Kuminga over Green? What's so good about Kuminga?

This is great stuff; would you mind adding a few more guys who're occasionally found in the lottery of various mock drafts?

Sengun (you saw that coming :chuckle:)
Williams
Nix
Thomas
Christopher
Garuba

Here are per-100 numbers for the international guys:

It likes Sengun a lot. Just want to point that out, as his data is really good and I am still unsure if I like him. :chuckle: Mark this down for anyone who says I just look at the number. Haha.

Out of the other subset of players, it likes Cam and Christopher the most. Garuba it somewhat likes but it profiles him more as a role player, where almost all his value is derived from non scoring contribution. With Cam and Christopher, you see the bigger negative numbers in the ADJ column, less scoring. So it is more an exercise in liking both as scorers at the NBA level (Which I personally do). Christopher does other things to bump him up a non scoring level, so I would probably lean towards him if picking......as that additional non scoring value gives him more room for error as a profile......but Cam has a really good mix of volume and FT generation, that would lead me to believe he's probably got a chance to be a good NBA scorer. We'll see. Both look like guys that are probably picks in the 25-30 range.

Following up from above......Christopher is the guy I hope the Cavs try to move up to get, if he does last until the late first.

Movement wise, he just really reminds me of Donovan Mitchell. And just shows some high level off the move shooting.

If the team is staring down the barrel at BPA and it's a center/PF, do they take said player over a lesser SF prospect, even if that SF prospect represents a clear upgrade to what we have?

Do we have a superstar currently? no, if there is a surefire prospect we take them no matter the position. Stars win and we don't have any currently.

I would say yes IF the team has the PF/C in a higher tier on their board.

However, Mobley is #1 on my board so my answer here is biased.

But with Allen onboard why draft a another big man when what this team desperately needs in a player (6’7-6’8) is one that can shoot, score and create off the dribble...not just for himself but others! I like Mobley but he’s not a playmaker

I think a lot of this depends on your view of Mobley’s ceiling. Is he someone like Ayton? Who will be a good NBA player but maybe not a star?

The Cavs need to be a little more risk tolerant in this draft IMO. We need a star. And if that means taking a chance on someone like Cade, over Mobley, I would understand that rationale.

A simply good NBA player doesn’t do a lot for us in this rebuild. Our best player is going to be to the 4th year of his rookie deal and we need a #1 option pretty desperately if this has any chance of working.

Mobley has a higher ceiling than Cade.

I would understand your argument if you switched Cade with Jalen Green, but you didn't...

I'm pretty low on Cade compared to other prospects, so yeah.

This is probably the most consequential draft lottery of our current rebuild.

Either we have some luck, and can draft a potential superstar like Mobley, Green, Suggs, or Cade. And all of a sudden, our other pieces that were never meant to be No. 1 options start to make more sense. Our timeline aligns, with at least three other guys that I feel can be key contributors on a winning team (Sexton, Allen, and to a lesser degree Nance) and a number of interesting other young guys that maybe one or two of them can pop (Okoro, Garland, Wade, Stevens, Windler). Then, the FO can make some win-now moves and we can feel good about making a big playoff push next season and have rising young talent to only get better from there.

Or we don't have luck, draft another good-not-great player, give big money to Sexton and Allen, and all of a sudden are too good to fully tank and stuck with a damn mediocre team.

Don't mean to be dramatic, but this lottery can determine if the next 5-10 years of Cavs basketball will be enjoyable to watch. Luck.
