Rule 5 draft talk

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Gamel performed to his career numbers in 2021 and ended up with a 101 wRc+, 347 OBP and 322 wOBA in 400 PA (the few crappy one's in Cleveland included). IOW, he was better than all our other cOF and better than 2/3 of our lineup.
Maybe we should have given him more playing time instead of Zimmer etc

I've done this in the GM thread, but once more with feeling.

My 40 man for the R5 only, and if there is no trade before then...and reflects the moves the FO has already made

The FO has already made moves that leave this list at 17 pitchers and 20 position players. I want to eventually get to 20-20, but for now I have three spots to work with and only one viable MLB catcher, which will be addressed after the R5.

The regret I had with this list was that Tena wasn't on it, so Tena gets protected.

It looks like Stephan is going to the bullpen exclusively, so as I look at my SPs, I only see eight that could reasonably be expected to be competitive at the MLB level next season. Cantillo is not close to ready and Vargas will not throw a lot of innings this year. Eight isn't nearly enough, so I'm going to protect Scott.

This leaves me with one more spot...and the choices on my board are Zimmer, Clement, Nelson, and Moss.

Zimmer is arby eligible, and I plan on replacing him anyway. I like Clement, but he doesn't fit in our MIF plans, except as a util....and he might slide thru waivers. Moss can't stay healthy, and he might slide thru. As a reliever, somebody would likely take a flier on Nelson, so he gets the last spot.

This is an exercise that is only for R5 purposes, because I expect to add at least four MLB players...2 OFs, a catcher, and a reliever...before winter is over.

Obviously, if we make a four for one trade before the R5, the list will change. We might even be able to leave a spot open to snatch a R5 of our own.

I checked and Gamel had just 17 ABs with Tribe; sure seemed like a lot more misery.

If someone like Gamel ends up making the team as a legit 4th OFer I'll bitch and moan a little bit... It was seeing him batting leadoff that killed me. He is another good example of a player who plays more on a bad/avg team and rides the bench on a good one.

Which should tell us all we need to know about our list of corner OFs in 2021.

Zimmer, Harold, Mercado, and Johnson combined for over 1000 PAs this year.

That's true, but that had a lot to due with issues with our opening day starters of Naylor and Rosario. Luplow playing center + injury even mucked things up. What we can reasonably count on is CF shouldn't be the train wreck it was in 2021 and maybe that helps stabilize the corners.

Definitely need to bring in another OFer bat, one that you can slot in your 2-5 spots all day. Even better would be 2, but I'm preaching to the choir.

Checking.

Conflicting info that his 8/10/17 signing was actually later and finalized in September, which would have his clock kicking in a year later than everyone else from that class.

Will get back with ya.

So I'm still getting conflicting info, both in official databases and open to public stuff.

Regardless, still curious why you are high enough on him to protect him @MadThinker88

I believe he is thinking on Hector Rondon in a sense, the bullpen arm that has upside.

What is your scouting report on him? His numbers say big arm, with late inning potential, but still needs a little more work on control, but I don't know anything else personally.

@MadThinker88 posted an excellent breakdown on his stuff a few pages back, looks like he could be pretty elite.

Personally I think he is just too far away for serious consideration, but don't completely rule it out.

This.

He has a chance to be real good, terrific slider albeit quite inconsistent right now, good velo on his fastball, but a lot of control inconsistencies.

But he isn't a year away, he's 2 or 3. Hard to see a team roster that.

His stats aren't pretty, but Juan Mota is a guy I can see them losing. Guys who throw 100 can play at any level at any time and I can see a team sticking him as their last bullpen option and develop him a bit more to refine him over a full season. He has 2 plus plus pitches, FB and split change.

So Mota is ahead of Jerson as an MLB ready prospect?

What about Broom in 22? He has done so well until 21, so did he just hit a roadblock or he just not up to snuff for the pros?

Jerson is a better prospect long term, but Mota is a step away in AAA and Jerson still has the hardest jump in the minors to make, from High A to AA.

Broom is a gimmick guy that doesn't really have a place with Sandlin on the MLB roster.

I would be thrilled if the worst thing that happens to us in R5 is that we lose Mota.
